i just wish they people would create a better skill based matchmaking..

like in cod... at least create a matching where rank level is within everyone else.. nothing is worse then going into a game as a lvl 1 where everyone is lvel 40+. i understand the weapons are fine in the begining but perks and what not create someunfair balances..

matching like 15% up or down on rank. if you are 30 u play with 25-35 group.

something like that would level out some of the matches.. and i understand that not all 40+ are good. cause anyone can get there with time.

The Halo 2 system was based purely on win / lose. This meant at higher levels, only those good enough to compete stayed at those ranks. Sadly, most people who are not good at games get upset they cannot achieve a high rank and either quit or whine about it.

The problem is that developers make games as noob-friendly as possible for the casual gamers cause thats where the money is at. If they make ranking up based on skill, most casual players would give up and stop playing and therefore would be less likely to buy the sequel.

They just need to separate competitive and casual gamers. Sometimes I feel like competing and other times I just want to have fun with friends.

The thing is, there are ranked and unranked playlists. Casuals play the unranked lists and those who want to compete play the ranked.

True, but the ranked (arena) in Reach is broken. I'm not sure how they didn't see it ahead of time. If the enemy team quits after a minute, you get a really low score counted towards your rank. Everyone gets penalized. I stopped playing it altogether.

The rank number is simply for show. What actually happens is the players with the top 4 ranks are given TrueSkill, and the bottom 4 are subtracted it. The artificial number doesn't actually mean anything. The flaw in the system is that it only rewards players based on themselves. Very little is rewarded / penalized for winning / losing. They are using an FFA type system in what is supposed to be a team game. You are not only competing against the other 4 opponents, but your teammates as well. This makes for very bad team games.

Not to mention that the lose for quitting is nonexistent. In order to achieve Onyx bracket, just quit any game you are not doing amazing in. Sure, you'll get banned every so often, but you will get Onyx pretty easily.

maybe they could just penazlize the dropouts with season ban if they do it to much. and not count the winners?

Yeah, when my buddy and I did Arena Doubles in one day two of our games both guys on the other team dropped out after we started off with a commanding lead. No fun at all...

I know that Bungie shouldn't have been so short-sighted and designed the system better, but I just cannot see the point of a player taking advantage of a poor system in order to achieve Onyx class. Once you get there, then what? The whole point is to play against people of similar skill, what is the desire to gain Onyx status when you aren't even going to finish games in the first place? Plus it resets each "season", so it just seems very, very pointless for a player to do this.

Which is exactly why this game will die when Black Ops comes out. There is no real point to continue to play except to play dress up and grind XP.

Or maybe because the game is fun. The old UT and Quake games didn't have levels, were they pointless?

If you want to play a game for the sole purpose of leveling up, play an MMO. If you want to actually have fun, play a shooter or some other type of game.

Without incentive, people will not play. If credits are the only incentive to play Halo (a game considered to be a very competitive, team based, console FPS), the competitive community will move along very quickly.

As I've predicted in previous posts, this game will die out when Black Ops is released.

To me, they were. Or at least outside of LAN play, I never really found the appeal. I like the RPG-lite elements introduced in our console FPS games as of late. For me, they are just like achievements, gives me something to work towards. I like goals and not just mindless match after match.

And by "die out" you mean the highly competitive players will leave, I take it? I mean, it seems what you're saying is that highly competitive players are drawn to the level progression, not the game itself. So because Reach doesn't have the same depth in its leveling system as COD, it'll lose them.

I say good. Let those guys leave. I only ever play social playlists anyway and I have my psych profile set to "casual" and "quiet." I don't care one iota about level progression, stats, or unlocks, I actually play games to have fun. If Black Ops does indeed trigger an exodus of those types of players, that's good because it'll mean a larger ratio of fun:competitive players. The fewer MLG-tards, the better.

No shooter will ever kill a Halo game. I mean Halo 3 was still pulling in 140,000-200,000 at any given time up until Reach's release and that game was three years old. The numbers may fall under 200,000, but it won't die.

As of right now, Halo 3 and Reach are tied in player count. So... Reach when from 700,000 a day down to 140,000 and it has been out how long?

They matchmaking is simply not up to par with what a lot of people come to expect from a Bungie game.

Ha! I got it today already. Looks like the PO didn't lose it, they just lost track of it and had it marked incorrectly as "delivered" in their system.
