Could anybody tell me the difference in my 980 6 core and the new 5820K?

Would it be worth it? Perhaps 30% faster? Looking to upgrade but not sure if it would be worth it.
We have no way of knowing that unless you tell us what kind of a budget you have as well as how you use your PC.
Cough up that info, then we can talk.

Budget is perhaps buying a 5820k, new motherboard and DDR 4 ram. I use my pc for mostly gaming and I already know the cpu isn't getting hammered.

I'm a bit of a pc nerd and like to keep it updated. It's been 3 years since I did anything to the cpu, last year I put in two 780 GTX's.

Faster single threaded clock speeds, PCIE-3, more Sata... it all sounds very enticing. I know it won't be cheap though.

By asking about your "budget", I'm asking about a dollar amount.
DDR4 @ 4GB... 8GB... 16GB... 32GB?

i7-5820k, air cooling, MB @ 16GB @ less than $875... Yes, it's "worth it"

5820K - $450.00 Cdn
16 GB ram - $270.00
Asus Motherboard - approx. $400.00

So yeah, it's not gonna be cheap. My question is though how much faster would a 5820 be compared to my 980? We're talking a few generations here, gotta be more IPC and such, although I know how well regarded the Gulftown are..

Doesn't i7-5960X have internal GPU (like Intel HD Graphics 4600)? If not - what does perform graphics without separate GPU?

Yes, there is a very apparent wall around 4.5GHz with the 5960X. Punching through it requires a lot of voltage and a lot of cooling. It is something I don't want to mess with.

Trying 4.3GHz now with just 1.25V and even lower memory timings. I'll see how it goes over night.
Haven't looked up the datasheets, but is Tjmax really just 89C

There is a new bios on gigabytes site dated today. Not sure if it'll help you on your adventure or not. Fixed turbo boost issue is what it says.

The 5960x was in stock at microcenter, and I have bought it.

However no ram and no Asus Extereme v to be found on the web. I am looking for F4-3000C15Q-16GRR g.skill due to lower timings and higher clocks. Also looking for the Extreme V. Grrrr how long will I have to wait...

Does it really?

Now the other new 6-core models we did not receive just yet, . . . You know, the 6-core parts will definitely clock higher opposed to the 8-core model we tested today.

Did they simply disable 2 cores and set their 5960x to different clockspeeds to emulate a 5930k and a 5820k? I'd like to see someone who has a genuine silicon 5820k overclock it. something like this:

The Core i7-5960X was provided H from Intel, the Core i7-5820K the editors based on their own channels. Even the Core i7-5930K is represented in the test. But whose test results are based on a simulation based on the Core i7-5820K - all turbo stages were selected manually according to the specifications.
(from this review)

And while we are at it, it would be nice if someone can confirm that the cpu's use solder and not TIM.

It's almost definitely TIM. There's no way MSI would bother make a delid guard for a CPU that can't be delidded. The chance of misleading people and ending up in legal trouble is far too great to be worth it. Sadly, solder is Xeon-only now.

Delid Die Guard. Yup. It's there, along with a diagram of a razor blade, etc. Ah, well.

Thank you.

On the bright side, based on the temps and overclocks reviewers are getting, it seems that there's no gap... at least in the review samples.

Actually, considering the fact that the reviews use engineering samples and a month ago an ES was soldered, it's possible that review chips use epoxy while retail chips won't, or that only the 5960X uses the epoxy.

The picture in that review shows a hole in the IHS which always used to mean that it was soldered.

They are all soldered. Die guard should be meant for 1150 cpus, not 2011-3. If MSI supplied those in X99, then they were misinformed and should issue a statement.

Thanks for the info.

I'm no longer using the UD5. Micro Center had the board I originally wanted in stock, the Gaming G1, so I exchanged the UD5 for it. This board doesn't have the high pitch squeal from the VRM area that the first Gaming G1 board I bought before had.

I'm using the F7 BIOS and it fixes the issue where I could not enter the BIOS with RAID enabled on SATA ports 0-5. I also see that when I use the XMP profile it changes the base clock to 105MHz. Still can't get 2800, but I can get 2520 with 14-14-14 timings at 1.20V. I also have the CPU at 4.2GHz with 1.25V. Ran LinX last night for 7 hours and it passed just fine. I think 4.2GHz is right where I'll keep it.

My i7 5820K is due to arrive today, so once i finish work i shall get it built and have a go at overclocking and see how it compares to these i7 5960X with 2cores disabled.

I have went with the Gigabyte Gamer G1 so hoping i dont have the same issue's as adams first G1 board had. So fingers crossed.

Ordered a Noctua NH-D15 to keep things cool.

16GB Crucial DDR4 2133 which should be an upgrade over my 4GB Kingston DDR3 1333.
I never find buying the fastest memory makes a big enough differnece the budget stuff is suffice.

Upgrading from a stock i7 860 so should be a nice speed up.

Performed more stability testing. 4.2GHz (40 x 105MHz) @ 1.25V with the memory at 2520 using 14-14-14 timings @ 1.20V. High LLC was also used. Room was at 75° F. The CPU temps will never get this high during normal use, so I think it did pretty good. I was also browsing the web during the earlier parts of the test which caused the GFlops to go down a bit. Went from 162 Gflops at stock to 228 Gflops using the same LinX AVX settings of 14 threads and 24GB of memory. A nice increase. Going to do long duration testing before I call it stable.
