Dennis is bombing and could reach Cat 4 soon. The storm actually looks better than it did before it hit Cuba. It's deepened so rapidly that the winds have to catch up to the pressure drop.

Look at it now. ---->Mean Hurricane
It's a beautiful hurricane. The latest NHC report has it back up to 115mph winds for Cat 3 status, and it's now forcasted to land with at least Cat 4 status.

pretty huricane?? i guess you have never had your property damaged by one??
Don't get me wrong, I don't wish for anyone to have to deal with these things, but there's a certain beauty to just what mother nature can create.

Edit: You can see the eye like no other in this shot :Q

a 10 mile wide eye and in the distance it takes to walk for an hour and a half, the winds went from 115 to 0. extremely powerful storm and it will strengthen. also, there is a wave off of africa that can turn into a storm.

WOW, great shot! And this is only a Cat. 2? Looks a lot worse than that.

The original poster hasn't updated the thread title. As of right now, Dennis is a STRONG category 3 hurricane with 125mph winds and the National Hurricane Center is saying it could possibly even make category 4 at some point.

Unfortunately, it seems headed for almost the same landfall point that Ivan had last fall. I know they're still rebuilding the Gulf Shores area here in AL. This will be absolutely DEVASTATING if it hits again. Our state has so little coastline to begin with. For it to possibly take 2 direct hits from two category 3+ storms within a 9 month span is insane.

Ive had some rain and thunder in Sarasota. We still have had power all day. Its been nice enough to even go to the beach. The waves were large, but not too dangerous. I saw a few bloodied up surfers that hit the rocks. Either way, it wasnt too bad, though Sarasota is hardly getting any of Dennis.

I would be surprised if it didn't hit Cat 4 at this rate. It's just too well built and over too good of water to stay Cat 3, and if today was any indication, this is a storm that can easily pack on power in only several hours. Anyhow, new wind and position projections are due 15 minutes with the 11pm update.

Wow, that is truely awesome.

I agree with ViRGE. Mother nature can certainly create some amazing things.

Edit: From the hurricane center's discussion..

after deepening at a rate that bordered on insane during the
afternoon...
Dennis has continued to strengthen at a more normal
rate this evening.

There's something you don't want to hear if you live on the Alabama/Mississippi coast..

I have to admit I chuckled a bit at that; it's not too often the NHC gets to crack jokes in their official discussion.

Camile was a devastating Cat 5 with winds over 200mph and hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969

200+?

I thought Andrew was a 5? Or just a strong 4...

Ivan ended up coming in as a strong 3 right?

andrew = strong 4, ivan = strong 3. this one looks like it could do serious damage, like ivan and charley. that hurricane did not have 200+ mph winds. gilbert did though.
