Behind the house, we have a small stream and whenever it rains hard, it overflows into our backyard. I wanna see how much water is gonna overflow when the storm hits

Seems there is some growing concern (especially in NC) about flood vulnerability of important/hazardous facilities like coal ash impound ponds, hog waste lagoons, chemical storage, and even some of the nuclear plants. Double digit rainfall in a day is going to take things to an unknown place.

You should go out now (well, ok not right NOW b/c it's dark) and get a 'before' pic. Ima do that tomorrow just because.

Edit: I wonder if it's prudent to take pics of the surroundings before something hits, just for insurance purposes *rubs chin in thinking fashion*

@bruceb - sounds good. I too suck at golf. I use a 5-wood to tee of at Knights play lol!

This will be my second hurricane and I learned my lesson from the first one. This time I have a generator with a transfer switch wired and 30 gallons of fuel. Plenty of water and food to get me over a week easily. Considering I'll be working 12hrs a day for anytime the power is out I should be good to go. Our town has serious flooding issues with a good summer thunderstorm, this week should be interesting to say the least. I'll be out when it hits, Dodge Charger vs Hurricane!

The coal ash ponds are particularly galling. It's been a well known problem for decades and the utilities have managed to avoid landfilling it all in dry permanent closures because they bought the politicians.

My parents just moved down to SC (about 20 miles west of Charleston, where the rest of my immediate family is) into a brand new townhouse so I'm hoping they'll be alright. I'm flying down next month.

Storms like these make me glad I live in the Northeast and all I have to worry about is getting 2-3' of snow in a day and just having to snowblow for a couple of hours.

I cant believe there’s people wanting to ride it out. Wtf is the point, you can’t save your property anyways and all it’s doing is putting the inevitable rescuers lives at risk. If you have to get saved from this it should be a requirement that you get your ass whipped.

I can understand why they feel that way - I'd be thinking the same thing. But you're right, you can't do anything to save your property so you might as well save yourself.

Not me man. I lived through Andrew and dealt with the aftermath of Katrina. You aren’t stopping a wall of water, it will always win. It’d be like standing out in the middle of the traffic just because. It’s pointless.

Yeah, my older brother's family is under mandatory evacuation so they're leaving to stay with the in-laws. My oldest brother's family will likely leave tomorrow (seeing if anything changes, which isn't likely) to stay with friends.

My parents are a bit inland and not under mandatory evacuation, so they're staying for now. The brunt of the storm should miss them.

It's probably that completely irrational hope people have for some reason, like running after a car that's rolling down a steep hill thinking they'll somehow be able to stop it.

I'll go out tomorrow and get pictures for some good before and after photos.

I pray the power doesnt go out because if it does, it's game over

I can't find any good SLOSH models for the storm, this is the best one:

If I wasn't so lazy I'd install it and run it myself

Man, last Hurricane that came through Raleigh was Fran in 96. That was a bitching time....My mom is still in Durham, she's got her lanterns, water, and dry goods for a few days, could drive further west if need be a couple of days after it its, assuming that's possible. Told her to get her ass up here but she doesn't want to be that far away in case things go to shit. that's kinda the point, I said....She lives in the woods. Place is surrounded by tall pines and soft, wet soil. Her power goes out once a week because of falling trees. On any old day. FFS.

Family friend has his big-ass house out on the marsh in Hamstead, just south of Topsail Island, and which is basically Wilmington. Their backyard is the intercoastal waterway. I'm guessing they are hosed.

extensive marshes are a really good buffer for flooding though, and it probably won't be as bad as it could be for them, but we'll see. It's coming dead on through the house and likely not running up the coast, so that's probably different.

So, how many critical backup systems (generators, pumps only hooked up to the grid, hospital oxygen supplies...) will fail due to being installed below flood level during this storm?

Did not know we had so many folks here on the forum that are in the Raleigh / Apex area of NC

@mrblotto -- I played Knights once (a real short 24 hole par 3 course) .. Maybe we can get together for a round later this year or early next year. You should be able to play the par 3 course with irons, wedge & putter

If it hits the Carolinas as expected, based on Highland's "things my customers say" thread, (and a few Carolinians I've known over the years) there's no intelligent life there...so...bring it on!
You're still gonna be here, right?

Still no loss.

I'll go with probably a ton. I doubt anybody has really modeled what 10 or 20 inches of rain in a day-ish could do to inland NC/SC

I'm in South East FL and I can tell you that it was a ton of damage at a cat 1. NC is going to get hit so hard. You really need to get your shit and leave. If that thing hits at a 3 or higher, your roof is gone.

Just go. You can always come back if its fine, but you cant leave if its not.
