what I am really hoping for is side-by-side multitasking on tablets.

Given the framework they have for fragments etc. it would make sense to have the option to either have 2 fragments or 1 full app available. Then you would have the option to expand either fragment to fullscreen, and then go back to the two apps. this would be a killer feature. I would instantly buy an ICS tablet and mount it in my car to have nav and pandora running side by side.

That would be really nice, and would cause me to instantly buy any tablet that could do it.

I'm pretty disappointed with their choice of SOC, the 4460 uses a SGX540 which is the same as the Nexus S and all of the first Galaxy S phones.

Hmm I've never heard anything mentioned about GPU clocks, people always seem to focus on the cpu clock for the most part. Nothing from TI's site indicates this SGX540 is anything special though.

While better hardware wouldn't hurt, it's actually a good thing. If Google chose it as reference platform for ICS then it means older phones won't be left behind. Exynos and future chips should be even faster.

I hope to see more hardware acceleration integrated throughout ICS and a overall faster OS. As for the phone itself, I don't expect anything ground breaking, I'm mostly interested in how the PenTile display does.

Yeah that does make sense, I forget that nexus is supposed to be a development phone. WP7 has shown that you don't need a very powerful gpu to accelerate the UI, I'm really hoping that ICS brings android back to iOS and WP7 levels of smoothness with the interface.

Isn't it supposed to be clocked to some absurdly high number?

The SGX 540 inside Hummingbird is clocked at 200mhz,the one inside the OMAP 4460 is clocked at 384mhz.It's still last year tech tho and i'm disappointed in this phone.I was expecting at least something faster than the SGS2.Let's hope that the pentile HD display won't be a let down.

Yeah, so far Google has used the Nexus line to gently steer Android hardware development rather than as a high sales volume uber phone.

The Nexus One was a huuuuge step up from previous android phones. It was a commercial failure because they tried to sell it mainly unlocked and online and that didn't work.

Here's some details on the 4460 vs 4430 and the SGX540:OMAP4

4430 and 4460 use a PowerVR SGX540 integrated 3D graphics accelerator which runs at a clock frequency of 304 and 384 MHz respectively compared to previous incarnations of SGX540 typically at 200 MHz making them theoretically much faster.

I would argue that it wasn't a huge step up, it might have appeared so because the rest of the crop was bottom feeder hardware.

GLbenchmark was run on the phone and now their site is down, probably couldn't handle all the traffic.

EDIT: In the comment section, the site owner says the score is in between OMAP4430/4460 scores, no surprise there. For most people, it's ICS and the screen that will be selling this phone.

Even a dual core Snapdragon would've been a better choice. At least the Adreno 220 is somewhat competitive against the Mali 400.A subpar gpu with that screen is a huge no-no.
