Gorilla Glass is generally fine without a screen protector . . . but I believe the Gnex doesn't use GG? It uses a Samsung proprietary fortified glass.

Its not as scratch resistant as one would hope, there are many people reporting scratches on the screen just by pulling it out of their pocket, I put a case and screen protector on mine.

I've seen scratches get on a gorilla glass tbolt and several bionics. Maybe they are light but its nor worth it. The Verizon brand screen protector is totally worth the $10 for 3

Had both my T-Bolt and Droid 1 naked, and never had any scratches on the screens, so I'm going to keep the Nexus naked too.

Screen protectors make screens look like absolute crap, regardless of the quality of the screen.

7.5 hours sitting idle on 3G 78%

~3% a hour bat loss

as for the screen i had my OG Droid for almost 2 years and it still looked new when i have it to my cousin. Other then being dusty you would not have known it was used. i purchased a used droid X an it looked fantastic as well only had some chipping of the rubber on the bat case
never used a screen protector or case

not really sure what some of you do to your phones

Battery life seems to be on par if not better than my Droid 1 (3G/Wifi).

This was yesterday, 3g/wifi only. Didn't use it a lot, so mostly on standby.

Standard battery?

Something I've noticed, a number of sites have reported the LTE Nexus to be thicker than the GSM version. Which is clearly is. But, it feels extremely thin to me after toting around the Thunderbolt for 8 months. Going to pick up an extended batter later this week, I think.

It depends on the material. You wont be able to scratch it with a knife or piece of metal. But a grain of sand in your pocket could easily do it

Expensive watches have used this type of glass for decades

Have any of the non rooted users been able to get 4.0.3 on?

Also I have this weird thing occurring sometimes - I tried to turn off my phone earlier and it showed my volume line repeatedly bouncing towards off or whatever (I wasn't touching it) and my phone wouldn't turn off for some time. Any ideas?

No, there hasn't been an official release for 4.0.3 yet, GSM or LTE.

The volume issue sounds like the early bug in the first launched GSM versions, supposedly fixed in 4.0.1 or 4.0.2?

This is a GSM version and the latest update to the OS is my current version (4.0.1) - at least through my phone's update menu.

On another note - the face recognition thing is fun, but half the time the phone doesn't recognize my own face unless it's at precisely the same angle as the original shot I provided the phone with, heh. Still a nice gimmick.

The antenna on this def is different then the Droid x or bionic. Reception at work is worse

Can’t say that I have noticed the dropped call issue myself, but it does seem tough to ever get a full 4 bars of LTE on this puppy. I’m also not having to toggle in and out of airplane mode as much as some have claimed, but then again, I have had to a couple of times and that’s unfortunate. Some have locked onto the idea that the 4.0.2 update somehow broke signal strength – the jury is still out on that.

hmm, i thought the volume bug was specific to GSM phones, and then only when you were on an edge network on 2100mhz. wouldn't think it would affect the LTE models - I could be wrong though.

Not sure about the frequency/EDGE aspect, but it was my understanding that it was a GSM variant problem, which Aristotelian has?

My issues are with the signal strength, followed shortly by the low volume. Verizon's twitter account says they are aware of the issue and working towards a fix though, so at least that's something.

I seriously just tested my Nexus on 3G with 2 bars of signal and it pulled 56kbps.

Ahh, I want one so bad. Maybe I can convince my brother to take my TB and let me use his upgrade...

Root question on my new gnex

If i root it (without installing any new roms) will it still be able to take verizon updates?

I am waiting for proper roms but at this time it does not seem to be boggeg down by to much bloatware.

Main reason for rooting is for wireless tether ap ( as soon as working one is made).

Peace

Yes you should.

Updates will fail if you install clockwork recovery though, but you can easily go back to stock recovery by renaming the recovery file in /system (which you have to do to get CWR to stick).

lol. its most likely a non full power tower in the glen or a non full power tower in Corning itself that is quietly being tested and prob wont get turned fully on until next year. The guys at the VZW store cant explain it either and just said yea we dont know when i asked about it when i picked up the nexus

It's probably coming soon for you.

My cousin was talking using 4G in the Findlay, OH area over a month ago. 4G coverage was just announced a few weeks back to go live in that area on the 15th of this month.

I can get full bars of 4g just fine (in the small space 4g exists out here) it just seems that the signal is weaker when inside then im used to. for both 3 and 4g

Lots of people are reporting weak signal. Even outdoors, I get little LTE signal outdoors. Tbolt would get full LTE bars if I walked outside.

Seems to be more software though, and its good that Verizon is acknowledging there is a problem. Hopefully the fix comes soon, but I'm curious if they didn't just do it to stave off a flood of people wanting to return their Nexi for poor reception.

Non GNex fanboi here - but it seems like this whole thing is just so-so. Long wait to launch, then uncertainty/pushbacks/more pushbacks, then product issues in first few days (reception problems, touchscreen problems when held in landscape, generally poor battery life). I mean to be honest it seems just like any regular phone with some issues.....not this Second Coming of You Know Who Ultra Phone as everyone was hoping.

I was waiting and waiting to perhaps get this when it comes on AT&T, but I'm not sold that it's that much better than a Samsung Skyrocket especially once same gets loaded with ICS.

if the iphone had this many issues this forum would explode

The Nexus doesn't really have that many issues, its mainly the signal strength issue. The OS is damn solid.

Remember, the iPhone 3G(S) had weak signal and dropped calls aplenty, and the 4 had the worst death grip problem of any smartphone.

I dunno what you guys are doing with your phones, but I've had none of these issues with signal and volume. Heck, if anything it seems like 4G service has expanded in and around DC, MD, and Northern VA.

My friend who's a die hard dedicated keyboard fanatic (we both got the OG Droid together, then he went Droid 2, and now has a Droid 3) tried my Nexus and 30 minutes later told me he's going to go get one today. :awe:
