question for verizon customers...

i am somewhat interested in upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus but want to see it in store before i decide anything.

i'm currently in contract until october 2012 with verizon, and if i try to upgrade through their website it says i will have to pay $650 for it.

if i go in store and tell them i want to upgrade, or call on the phone (if i am actually interested in it) will they give me the 2yr contract price if i just sign up for 2 more years? i thought i remembered around when the iphone came out that verizon was kind of changing their whole thing up as far as contracts and new phones go, but i don't remember exactly.

I don't think so. I think you are going to have to pay out-of-contract prices.

yah if that is the only way, no way in hell i'm paying $650 for a phone, even though i could sell my ip4 for a decent $$.

If you are seriously interested I'd give them a call. You never know what they will do, and it doesn't hurt to at least try. Just try to be persuasive, they could surprise you.

The worst they can do is tell you no.

yea i just have to go to the store and check it out before i decide if it is something i'd consider. i've been a verizon customer for like 8 years so who knows if that would help or anything. doubt it lol.

Got an MHL adapter to hook the phone up to my TV. It was a retro weekend for me and my brother; played some Jurassic Park 2 via SNES emulator with 2 Wii classic controllers. Then we did some 4 player GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.

Love this phone. :awe:

I assume it is pretty much perfectly smooth to, eh?
I haven't been keeping up with emulators, and SNES was always my favorite platform to focus on anyhow. But I'd love to be able to quickly get a 4player game of GoldenEye or PD going without much effort.

There was some lag here and there, but I think it was other apps (email, twitter) doing their checks for updates in the background. So I disabled everything but Bluetooth (needed for the Wii controllers) and it was a lot better.

This is the app I used for the controllers.

10 Months is a pretty big jump. Good luck with that.

Unless you're looking for some tech e-peen among your peers I would sit it out and wait for the next great phone to come down the pike. Worst case scenario is that you wait a few months, decide you can't stand it any longer, sell your ip4s for, probably, about the same as you would get for it today and get the Gnex at a huge discount.

Agreed it doesn't hurt to ask, but from a business standpoint WHY WOULD THEY? They just subsidized you for an expensive phone with the understanding that you'd pay it back through a 2 year contract. Why would they effectively forego 1/2 of that payback and subsidize you again with another expensive phone? Next year you'll be back in the store again telling them that you now really really really want a SGS3 or whatever because your Galaxy Nexus is soooo 2011. Not a good recipe for making money as a business.......

They are already doing you a favor if they grant you an early upgrade 12 months out and now you are suggesting they do it an additional 4?

anyone find a cheaper price on extended battery?

I just got my phone from amazon as well. 5 days from order to delivery. no complaints here.

I also had a dead pixel. called amazon and they're shipping one out right away for advanced replacement. Gotta love Amazonwireless

well verizon used to let you upgrade at the discounted price after 1 year, it was recently they changed this. it was recently they also changed allowing an additional discount for the "new every 2" promotion, which would give you additional $50 or so if you upgraded after your 2 year contract was up.

so it's not like this is unheard of.

and no i'm not one of the people that needs the latest and greatest phone, so chances are I won't be looking to upgrade in 3 years, if i were to get the galaxy nexus. but again, this is still in the prelim stages heh, i still have to see the phone in person.

Verizon was selling it for $25. I think they may be out of stock online, so you may need to check with local stores. I think it's hit or miss if they are selling it for $25 in store based on what I read on other forums.

Well, usually you don't have to wait till the contract actually expires before you're eligible to upgrade, so it's probably more like 4 months.

Not to be picky but the normal upgrade period is 20 months, 22 if you go through a retailer - so it's still a 6 month jump. I know people that have been able to move their upgrade up a couple months, but not for a top-of-the-line device, they had to take an older gen device.

Ok, I'm 35 and I'm thinking about getting my first cell phone. And the Galaxy seems like the one for me, even though it might be too much phone. Anyways as this is my 1st foray into this world I had a couple questions.

I saw some posts about getting it for $150 from amazon and now it looks like it's at $189 (still a good price) anyone guessing on it coming back down or a verizon store matching the price?

Plans: Ok here I'm pretty lost. Since I've never had a phone I don't know what my needs are. I'd probably play around a bit but I wouldn't be on it that much. Would 4G be ok? Also, saw some people who said they got unlimited for cheap but didn't see an option on Amazon's plan section.

Warranty: Usually I'm not a warranty person expect for a few things. Is it worth getting one for the phone and if so which one?

WTF are Ringback Tones and why would I want to pay $.99 a month for them?

-You'd have to look and see if 4G is available in your area. If it isn't, you can simply disable the 4G radio to conserve battery life. IMO it won't hurt you to have a 4G capable phone, it's better to have it and not use it than eventually find out you want it and need a new phone to be able to get it.
Either way, you will have to have a data plan and currently the 4G/3G is the same price. You just have to select how much data you need. I think VZW has a current promotion that you get 4 GB for the 2 GB price.

-I usually get the Warranty/Insurance. The phone is $650 to replace currently, that's a pretty big chunk of change to drop in case you damage your phone.

- Ringback tones I think are when someone calls you they hear a song rather than the normal ringing sound. Pretty annoying, I hate when someone has that.

Get it online. VZ stores aren't going to match the prices. Maybe Best Buy if they have a sale, but the Galaxy Nexus is too new.

You can't officially get unlimited on any carrier but Sprint any more. You *can* get 4gb of LTE on Verizon if you want. That's the best carrier deal. The alternative is to import an international version at full-price and sign up for AT&T's dumbphone data plan, but that limits your d/l speeds (still faster than Verizon 3g though) because they won't provision HSPA+ access onto a SIM unless it's in a HSPA+ smartphone.

You don't want to pay for tones, visual voice mail, navigation, or any of that crap.

I agree, I was worried about the size of the phone but after using it the weight/design feels great in the hand. I was kind of expecting a heavy brick like the thunderbolt but this phone is very light.

I've read on XDA forums by a few posters that with the extended the battery it feels even better in your hand. Can't wait for it to show up.

i would agree with the XDA posters, the extended battery is just enough heavier where it makes the phone feel even more solid without making it seem heavy

I called twice about this and received the same answer both times. I have an upgrade on my second line available 1/13/12, and I wanted them to move it forward so I could use that upgrade for my self. Both times I was told they'd do it over the phone but it can't be anything relatively new (Razr, GNex, etc.)

When I called they said that if I wanted to do it in a store, I'd have to go to the store and see if the manager would allow me to upgrade, but same story they won't do it with the newer phones.

OK, played with one at Verizon this morning. Pretty god damn nice. Shame it took so long to get there. Now we have to wait an even longer time until these things some down to a reasonable price and service isnt a non-lubed reaming.
But its good to know Google is actually trying to forge ahead. I'd like to say the wait was worth it but since I wont actually be buying one any time soon, I cant.
