This is what Bulldozer should have been, slightly less IPC than Nehalem but clocking higher to make up for it and with two more cores to shine in multi threaded apps. Let's see if they can hit the mark this time.

Dual core with super HT is a bit hard to swallow. True Quad seems to be the sweatspot. If it is indeed fast as Nehalem, it would be fantastic achievement and would be awesome for laptops if they can get power usage down.

Clock-for-clock, the new architecture has yet to catch up with K10, so the new processors will probably be around Phenom II levels of performance for a single core. About the Nehalem: it should eat the old i7s for breakfast. Bulldozer already competes with i5 2500K when it functions properly, and if the Piledriver is able to fix some faults Bulldozer had while lowering power consumption and maintaining high overclockability, we might just get a Sandy Bridge competitor here.

4 int cores/2 fp units maybe? Still doesn't roll off the tongue I guess. Does it even matter how many fp units the CPU has if it performs similarly? Does lacking a L3 cache make Trinity a 8/3 core cpu? Is each Bulldozer int core only a 2/3 of a core compared to Phenom that has 3 ALUs and 3 AGUs?

You see, the reason that Bulldozer tanked was because it only had 8*2/3*1/2=16/6 cores! And it's even worse for Trinity, 4*2/3*1/2*2/3=16/18, thats not even a full core! What is AMD thinking? D:

I guess it's too late for me to avoid a silly discussion about what is a core? (a miserable pile of secrets!)

Quite crazy looking at that, more than half the die space is the GPU.

Finally, an iGPU that can handle 1080p gaming?? Would be awesome for a light-gamer setup.

Also, with Intel's failIvB they are really letting AMD play catch up.

Its also worth noticing AMD talks about performance/watt now. And they state 15%. Ivy on the same metrics is alot better than Sandy. Performance/watt is so easy to manipulate.

The chance of Trinity being the same speed as Nehalem is none. Did you guys forget that Zambezi has twice the number of cores yet it's still around the same performance as an i7-950 in MT? Unless AMD made a magical 30%+ IPC improvement and huge clock speed imprpvements, no.

Am i the only seeing that Trinity seems to drive CPU down FOR an increase of GPU performance?

They're making more potential bottlenecks by not fixing the starvation from Bulldozer.
At which point very soon, gpu increase won't really matter since the cpu cannot keep up even remotely.

Even on laptop reso's.

Considering that clock for clock Ivy Bridge > Sandybridge > Westmere > Nehalem > Yorkfield > Kentsfield > Phenom II > Bulldozer, I think it is reasonable to low ball expectations from AMD on the high end at this point.
