Think I am buying then since it can overclock decently.

Performance improvement numbers over the GTX 580 are disappointing but an overclock could sell me.

The GTX 680 is 30% faster than a GTX 580...

3.8% faster at 1600p with 4xAA and 7.2% faster at 1200p with 4xAA if you discount HAWX2 and Company of Heroes, 2 games that don't stress either card in the least.


Dunno about 1600p 8xAA, because not everything was tested at that preset.

Think about what you're trying to get at here. These cards in no way will cost both companies greatly to make. The dies are tiny, the TDP is low.

The only losers out of this are consumers, they get $550 for a mid-range product.

I thought I saw 499.00 on that newegg leak? Which means that it is actually less expensive
than 7970 by 50 dollars.

It's a midrange card, what did you expect? Did gtx460 against GTX285 look any better? I think this card actually performs extremely well for what it is.

Agree. It's fine if this is the new mid range beauty...it's not so hot if we're talking the flagship.

We were talking about "flagships". First GTX 480 was Nvidia's flagship and then it was GTX 580. Increase between these two flagships were about 15-20%

About rebranding: Everyone knows that GK104 wasn't meant as high end GPUs and Nvidia rebranded their up coming cards.

It's disappointing as we have a process node change a "full" one at that, with a relatively small increase in performance.

GTX 480 -> GTX 580 is classified as only a Minor refresh.. no node change. 40nm -> 40nm

But once you consider die size has gone down... then GTX 580 -> GTX 680 is actually pretty damn impressive... but from a pure performance standpoint. No, not really.

I pretty much had already assumed the cards would be so close at the same clocks. They took the advantage of knowing where the bar was set and clocked high enough to come out on top in reviews.

Of course they also took advantage of knowing how much the 7970 costs and undercutting by $50. lol

The undercutting is the good part! Hopefully AMD responds, and in turn it makes all future products from both companies a little bit cheaper in the 28nm generation.

Yeah, clock for clock they look equal. If Nvidia's promise of "the most efficient architecture" holds true, Nvidia's best GK104 chips should be able to run at higher frequencies than AMD's due to less heat and power draw.

But I think the slots in the pcb of the fermi cards was the best idea. I was shocked how relatively cool 2 gtx 470s ran sandwiched on top of each other. Especially when I tried sandwiching 2 Galaxy gtx 460s and the top card ran 25c hotter. Too bad they got rid of it.

Yeah, I was really surprised about that. I expected everyone to jump on that bandwagon.

Seems like nV has more efficient architecture right now (performance per mm2, watt). But it's not really conclusive, we don't know how big 7970 would be if we striped it of it's DP capability. Anyway, the lead isn't particularly big, if we equalize gpu clocks and bandwidth gtx680 is 10-15% faster. Anyway, as for the final products, gtx680 is a better buy because it's cheaper. It's also faster at stock. However without seeing multi-gpu benchmarks if they were the same price I would still choose 7970 because it has larger frame buffer that is unless GTX680 clocks better, then it would be once again a better choice.

Excellent noise levels - Excellent performance for its die size- it really seems Nvidia has learned its lesson with Fermi.

Clock-for-clock comparison aren't totally apples to apples. Clock is a feature of the architecture (see "hot clocks")

Often wondered the same thing since gtx 280 compared to 4870, 480 to 5870, 580 to
6970. But many still wanted to directly compare die size to its gaming performance, always ignoring GPGPU dedicated transtors. I guess its switched now.

Can't adjust base clocks at all, have to manually raise cap on the TDP to allow for higher TURBO. Looks like at max settings, it can get ~8% extra turbo.

So they are basically even at 2560 4xMSAA yet anand doesn't hesitate to call GTX680 indisputable king of the heel. It's strange because 7950 is at least the same amount faster than 580 yet he only implicitly said that it is faster than 580.

In Swedish, but with SLI results, OC results and Nvidia Surround results.

Averaging 10% over HD7970 in 1920 and 5% in 2560.

Gigabyte, Galaxy, and Zotac just went up, no eVGA though.

Just read through AT's and [H]'s reviews, excellent write-ups from both. There's nothing really ground breaking here, but I can't wait to see overclocking numbers. :thumbsup:

It's a smarter way to OC thats true. Let the GPU do it for you.

It's max TURBO appears to be ~1.25ghz, good enough "OC".
