This Lion POS crashed my machine on install.

After two hours with tech support, I had no choice but to do a reformat and Snow Leopard install.

So lets try the Lion install again.....

My history with Crapple: 1.) 2008 Macbook Pro went belly up. Repair costs too expensive. 2.) Gets a 2011 13" MBP. The thing breaks down after 5 days. 3.) I return it and get a $2000 15" MBP. Then the Lion issue tanks the MBP.

Apple: "It just works!"

That is the experience pretty much everyone has with their Apple stuff. It is why they are on the brink of financial collapse.

For the suckers that might still want to use their stuff, I thought I would mention (it was news to me) that Lion will be available on a thumb drive for $69 in August.

I can't help feeling Apple laid an egg. Mission Control was the first thing I noticed, and while this will show more value on machines with more software, the apps I frequently access are already on my desktop or pinned to the dock. They are trying to basically get the touchy-feely interface onto a desktop, and it just doesn't feel natural for most of us. I suppose if you had never used a traditional desktop OS it would feel better, but it still feels a bit alien on a desktop, especially without a touchscreen. I haven't noticed anything else with what I use my Mac for that has made Lion feel like an upgrade over Snow Leopard - it feels like a few more features were tweaked and added on, and the price reflects that.

Yeah, the scroll thing is a big UI error IMO. Trackpads and mice should scroll like a mouse wheel. Touch screens should be the opposite because you grab the content and move it.

iCal as leather is just kind of dumb, and Address Book is now terrible. It is a computer program, not a physical book. Make it interact like a computer program. Having pages and flipping on an application is about as useful as a round knob you rotate.

Anyone know how to make 3 finger swipe up and down scroll all the way up / down like it used to before?

Like 3 finger swipe up used to = home

3 finger swipe down used to = end

Getting back to home is so easy that I'm not sure. You should check official documentation.

I'm running SL on my Hackintosh, I don't know much about the install process. If I buy Lion and burn it to a DVD and install it, will I lose everything? I was under the impression that OS X doesn't "update" like Windows. Would I need to do a Time Machine backup before hand and restore it after? I have pretty standard hardware, p45 chipset, ATI 4xxx card and an external sound card that has OS X support, I'm thinking that might not work in Lion though. But I could use my on board Reltek.

QueBert:

I have a MacBook Pro. I'm backing up up my system drive *and* my time machine/windows backup drive.... THEN I'm installing Lion on an external drive. If it sucks, then no harm done. If it's okay, then I'll put it on my system drive. If later it sucks, I have a bootable backup just incase I need to get to work immediately.

So I guess my point is that regardless of whether or not you're on a Hackintosh, it's just a good idea to back up your system before you try a new OS. As for Hackintosh support, I haven't the slightest clue since I don't use one anymore.

Has anyone created an install USB drive from the downloaded official Lion?

Is it still doable?

I have 8 Macs to update. I think I will wait until Sunday to play with the first one.

I am having difficulty backing up using Time Machine. I have an Airport Express with a 1TB Western Digital hard drive and have been trying to back up wirelessly. It takes forever to get past "preparing backup," and once I do it is absolutely insane how slow it is. It got stuck for a long time at 2KB, and has been stuck at 143KB for a couple of minutes. It has not backed up fully since I installed Lion, so I have 9.05GB to back up. I rebooted to see if that would help, but no such luck.

My FireFox and Chrome keep crashing whenever I try to use the 3-finger gesture to navigate back/forward. Anyone else?

Yep. I think it's still doable. Though myself, I just copied the whole install application over and launched it on a Snow Leopard machine to update.

Here's how to create a bootable disc yourself:
- Download the install app from the Mac App Store
- Right click the app and choose "Show package contents"
- Go inside the "Contents" folder
- Go inside the "SharedSupport" folder
- You'll find "InstallESD.dmg", which is the disc image of Lion
- Burn it or write it to a disc of your choice (make sure the disc is larger than the image)

I was at least able to make a bootable recovery and troubleshooting DVD from that. I'd assume the same holds true for USB.

I wouldn't just assume that a Lion upgrade would work on a Hackintosh out of the box.

Just wondering, why wouldn't you want conversations?

I can NOT stand gmail threads. If conversations is anything like that (I have not installed Lion yet), I WILL be turning that off.

The reason I do not like it is that it breaks up/confuses the timeline of my e-mails. I need to know at a glance that this email came before that email in two separate "conversations".

I think I know what you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure Lion Mail does that.

Unless you're talking about how it groups all the conversations together?

Am I the only one annoyed that this cost $30? Most of this stuff should be released via service pack, the rest is just a revenue generator for apple anyway.

I like this better than the microsoft model of 150-200 bucks every 3-4 years per machine

vs 30 bucks every 2 years to keep my 2 macs up to date

"250+ features" for $30 and you're bitching?

not sure if serious.
