If MLB stops allowing catchers to block the plate the injuries will decrease.I'm so sick of collisions at home plate. It's really turning me off to baseball. How many catchers need to get pointlessly hurt?

game was awesome, anyone catch iglesias making this catch?

I agree, under the current construct, it is the catcher's choice. But really, it's an expectation. It's the catcher's prerogative to block the plate (so even more blame goes on Avila last night)
As far as I know, this is the definition of interference. There was some controversy earlier in the postseason about some 1st baseman blocking 1st base with his foot as a runner attempted to make it back on a pickoff. It wasn't called, but it could (should) have been.and a fielder can block a base (if they're at the base) on certain plays like pickoffs, runners stretching a hit, etc. A runner can also take out a fielder if they're blocking said base.
I don't know what the solution is; there are issues with all of them. I am just sick of seeing people hurt from a play that (in my opinion) has no business being in baseball.Unless you mean MLB should require that all players slide at home. Meh, I love the collisions but I'm old school. However, I'm willing to admit that players these days are hulking amalgamations of whey protein and creatine with linebacker builds so it may be time to implement such a rule.

Then you're a hypocrite. He was gonna be out by ten feet.I don't know what the solution is; there are issues with all of them. I am just sick of seeing people hurt from a play that (in my opinion) has no business being in baseball.
That said, I was rooting for Miggy to run over Ross last night when he ran through the stop sign. Why not? What do you have to lose? There's no rule against it. That's why it's stupid.
That's...what I said. It's hypocritical to root within the current rules, even if you don't like the rule? Uh, no.Then you're a hypocrite. He was gonna be out by ten feet.
Well... Miggy could've gotten more hurt than he already is. But I do agree that the rule needs to change. That said, I was rooting for Miggy to run over Ross last night when he ran through the stop sign. Why not? What do you have to lose? There's no rule against it. That's why it's stupid.

Really? You think if Avila had straddled the plate, Ross would've slid? Nah.Ross was equally as dead duck on the play at the plate, either catcher has the option of striding the plate and making a tag without a massive collision, both decided to (legally) block the plate and absorb the ensuing impact..
Somebody was blaming Avila?
I was just throwing it out there. I'm OK with the way it's handled now. If MLBPA makes it an issue I'd support their stance. Big dudes barreling full speed for 88 feet isn't healthy.
Except that play was a swipe tag, only because the throw was way off. And that type of play is very unreliable.I'm blaming Avila because he could have done the swipe tag from out in front of the plate.
Nobody has to block the plate. But this is the playoffs and everyone wants to be the hero.

If Avila had tried that and failed, he'd be the scapegoat of the series.
LMFAO Fielder
only 285? The sad part is JS didn't play the rundown very well, he held the ball too long. If Fielder had "ran" to 3rd, he might've even had a 10% chance of getting there. Has to be the worst slide I've ever seen, though he was slightly impeded by a Sox defender.Yea, that was really bad baserunning, I had to LOL when they announced they were going to check on Salty to see if he's OK, heck, he landed on a 285lb pillow, how could he be hurt?. Bad move to pull Buck that soon, he did give up a walk but the grounder by Miggy could have just as easily been a double-play grounder, instead he brings in Morales who couldn't throw a stroke to save his life.
