Holy shit, I bet the first shoulder hit from Quentin broke the collarbone, he's like 2X the size of Greinke. WTF was Quentin thinking?? It was a 3-2 count in a one run game, Greinke must have said something to him to piss him off like that. Or he was just having a bad day. I agree with Mattingly that Quentin should be suspended until Greinke comes back from the injury.

Ya it almost appears that Quentin squared up like "You wanna make something of this?" and Greinke said or motioned.

And why didn't the catcher respond right away? I guess he thought Quentin wasn't going to charge the mound as well. But I think he should have been right up and grabbing or inbetween the guys.

Lame on Quentin's part though. Zack wasn't purposely trying to hit him. In 2011 and 2012 Quentin was the most hit player each of those years. He crowds the plate and pays for it. You can't get pissed when you crowd the plate and a pitcher hits you accidentally or to get the plate back. He's just lucky he didn't face Nolan Ryan. Nolan would have fired one right at his head for trying to take away the inside of the plate.

More often than not it's just minor injuries, but occasionally it's something serious like Greinke.

So basically Greinke has a rep for hitting batters, especially when he was with the Royals. Marquis threw one up and in on Greinke's teammate Kemp earlier in the game, and it's pretty obvious that Greinke hit Quentin in retaliation but did it intelligently at an "unobvious" point in the game to avoid suspension and getting ejected. Given Greinke's very good control and career history and earlier up and in on Kemp, it's obvious that he hit Quentin intentionally. This is especially considering that he threw his glove down and yelled at Quentin too. Like the article said, eventually someone is going to charge you if you have a rep as a pitcher who hits batters (like Greinke).

The counterargument to this is that regardless of Greinke's rep, he was simply protecting his teammate Kemp and sending a message to the Padres that it's not ok to throw at one of their best players. However, Greinke should have just thrown one up and in like they did to Kemp instead of actually plunking Quentin. The unwritten rules of baseball are an eye for an eye and Greinke upped the ante on that one.
