Any true Phillies fan knows the baseball gods smite the presumptuous.

It's a 162 game season.

And that's before the now endless playoffs.

I don't like to talk about it...

Starting Belliard hasn't made any sense to me. Yeah his bat has been hot, but he isn't a good hitter and he's a terrible fielder. Hudson is just the better player, but I guess that's why they pay Torre the big bucks, right?

This is what mystified me. He's not truly terrible, but Hudson is demonstrably better. Torre sees something you and I don't, is all I can come up with.

Game Chooch guns down a (draft, artful, Brooklyn?) Dodger.

Cholly loves Chooch.

He's not a premier hitter and never will be, but baseball, over 162 long ones, is a game of fundamentals, and Chooch delivers, together with what is a propensity to step and help the team offensively in the post-season.

THAT is the definition of a gamer.

Wow, do0d before me, that's deep!

And I agree, Chooch is at best a career .265 hitter, with maybe a .280+ season with 16-19 home runs at his best.

So, as good as he is at digging those balls out of the dirt, I hope this is enough to win him a gold glove before his career is over. Repeate post-season exposure never hurts.

You know, Joe Torre won several gold gloves as a Brave @ catcher, pretty much entirely on his offensive output, before he went to St. Louis and won a batting title freed of the tools of ignorance and playing third at something in the .360's -- which is your basic .400 season for any reasonably fast non-ex-catcher, which unfortunately Torre wasn't.

. . . Hell of a season that was, though.

Torre is starting him because of his offensive production, which is based solely on an entirely unsustainable BABIP which has artificially boosted Belliard's offensive numbers.

There is no doubt that Hudson (2.9 WAR) is far better than Belliard (1.2 WAR).

Managers get paid to make these decisions though and if the Dodgers win the World Series, nobody will care that Torre benched a better player in favor of an inferior one.

Kinda surprised they didn't bring him out for Howard. Though, if Ryan would get good wood on one of those heaters he might put it out of the park.
