but as the wise old COD sage Kabob has said many many times to me ... "sometimes you just need to move away vs taking those long distance shots. You can't always pick a guy off from long distance with an AR."
So true, now if I could only apply it!! :awe:
Beev, my tips for a new player.
-If you can, play with some friends who are decent at the game. You'll have a team who can back you up, you'll learn general strategy and how the maps play out, and you'll learn to help/support the team. You'll also have alot more fun.
-Pick with a well balanced gun and learn to use it. The M4A1 is a good candidate, I'd pick it over the SMGs simply because it has better range. The M4 may be the most balanced weapon in the game and it's a lvl 1 weapon for a reason. It does decent damage, has low recoil, good iron sights, VERY quick reload, etc.
At lvl 9 you unlock the SCAR-H...probably my favorite gun. As a new guy I'd stick mostly with it and the M4. Maybe give the UMP-45 a try on some of the smaller maps where long distance shots are less likely to happen (Sub Base, Invasion, Favela mostly). The Tar-21 (lvl 19 I believe) is strong and shoots fast but it has too much recoil to be used effectively by many. I do well with it but 90% of the time I will choose the SCAR or M4 over it.
Another option to consider would be an LMG which isn't as accurate as an assault rifle but does tons of damage and lets you sustain fire for several seconds without relolading. The RPD is a great starting LMG (second best overall IMHO behind only the AUG which is a higher level unlock), but you will move more slowly with it. Do NOT put a suppressor on a LMG though, they and the sniper rifles both take a damage hit when you use a silencer, the other weapons only get a range reduction.
-Learn the maps. You won't do this in a private match...you'll learn the layout but you don't really learn how to play them. I know most of the CoD 4 maps like the back of my hand, the MW2 maps are SO much more cluttered that I dont' think I've learned everything about any of the maps yet still. Also, there's new maps coming out tomorrow so on 3/5 of them you'll be on equal ground with everyone else as far as familiarity goes (the other two are CoD 4 maps).
-Move with a purpose. Don't just sprint around the map, move from cover to cover. Take shots you know you'll hit, don't just shoot because you see someone. Don't worry about dying, you're new, you're going to get blasted for a while. The more you play the better you'll get though.
-There is no such thing is a "noob" or "cheater" weapon in the game. All the weapons are there to be used and all have a purpose. Some are more handy than others (M203 is great for killing campers, red dot/holographic sight are great for sighting, snipers are great for long range, etc). If you find a weapon that you do well with, use it.
Here's how I'd set up your first class.
Primary: M4A1 or SCAR-H (lvl 9) - You'll have to start off with iron sights, once you get 10 kills you'll get the M203 and after 25 you'll get the red dot. Honestly as easy as the iron sights are to use with these two rifles (especially the SCAR) I'd throw a red dot on it, especially when learning to aim/shoot. It'll make acquiring targets a little easier.
Secondary: Personal choice - Personally I don't like the shotguns, I would rather have a pistol than a shotgun. It's true, up close you cannot touch the damage of a shotgun but typically I'm not blasting through a door and engaging everyone head on in CQB. I'm more than likely taking them out from mid-long range or hopefully flanking in from behind or the side of them. At lvl 30 though I almost always get the Stinger missile to take out aircraft. I find getting rid of the more beneficial than having a secondary weapon.
Equipment: Semtex - I actually prefer the frag grenade but you need to learn to cook frag grenades, semtex has a set timer and will stick to walls.
Special Grenade: Stun Grenade - I hate these things and I very rarely use my special grenades, but if you get hit with one you're in trouble unless the bad guys runs at you straight into your gun. It makes it so you turn/move VERY slowly for a few seconds.
Perk 1: Sleight of Hand - Typically I use Scavenger but the ability to reload and aim more quickly is absolutely invaluable when you're new.
Perk 2: Stopping Power - By far my favorite second perk, 40% more damage is always an excellent choice. What this translates to for most weapons is one fewer bullet to kill an enemy, for close range with the M4 that goes from 4 to 3 bullets and as a new guy shooting at moving targets that's a big difference. With the SCAR-H at close range that goes from 3 to 2 bullets.
Perk 3: Personal choice - As a new character I'd go with Steady Aim which will make you more accurate when you're not aiming down your sights. At lvl 29 I'd start using Ninja which will make you invisible to heartbeat sensors and when pro'd will make your footsteps silent. The other option is Commando which will make you rush forward and knife an enemy (sort of like Halo's energy sword charge), as a new guy though you probably won't be doing alot of knifing (I don't do much myself).
Those are just my tips, take them worth a grain of salt but they work for me and I like to consider myself at least a decent MW2 player but what works for me may or may not work for you.
Good luck, if you ever wanna party up shoot me an invite!
