See, I was fine with EA adding the "VIP Pack" on to BF2 for people who bought the game new. It was a move to encourage people to buy the game new rather than second hand, which I understand, and it was available on the market. They make zero profit on used game sales. BUT adding on exclusive weapons that you can't unlock separately is crap.

I agree, Activision has rapidly become the new EA.

I'm absolutely not in favor of them doing things to lower the resale value of a game I bought and making it more difficult to purchase used. It's a roundabout way of charging for MP functionality under the guise of being free...I thought that's the last thing people want.

If you want to talk about a step towards outright charging for MP, there it is. You get the online pass free...for now. Yes, I know you didn't NEED it to play online, but that's just as dangerous a trend as any activision is doing.

I'm just not sure what world we're living in where EA is totally getting a pass for all the incredible bullshit theyve done and continued to do with their FPSes through the years.

who is giving them a free pass? I think its bullshit. all of it

Battlefield 2 was the first game where weapons from expansions could be brought into the vanilla game. Many were clearly more powerful than the vanilla weapons. Never happened in CoD.
I don't recall them being that rapey compared to other unlockable guns, and they pushed out the expansion content for free like 2ish? years ago, in one big patch

Battlefield 2142 was littered with billboards where in game ads were to be placed. I never actually saw one in game, but there was a HUGE stink about it at the time. It would even rob a few cpu cycles from you to better determine where to place ads so they'd be most in your face. Never seen an ad in CoD.
dont really care, certainly didnt notice, there were worse issues with 2142 at launch anyways

Bad company 2 was BY FAR the most rapey. The limited edition came with day one unlocks that were available to all players. There was the VIP code nonsense. They charged for class "unlock shortcuts". They locked even a simple horde mode (onslaught) behind a $5 paywall. They even teamed up with Dr. Pepper for some cross promotion. They even charged for gun camos! CoD hasnt done any of the above.
they charged for class unlock shortcuts? the LE unlocks were marginally useful, same with the 'veteran upgrades' that all you had to do was own a previous battlefield upgrade to get, and were the uber low level unlocks

while I think its silly, you are painting a much worse picture than actually existed. dont even get me started about onslaught, shoulda been free, and shoulda been rolled to PC

the gun camos I am 100% OK with, marginally useful or advantageous, I have no problems with them charging for gun skins, because who the hell cares

MoH was no slouch either. The limited edition even came with a weapon (mp7), that was quite good, and completely impossible for non-limited players to unlock. There was a whole host of limited edition/paywall/microtransaction nonsense that I cant be bothered to look up because the game sucked so bad.

no idea didnt touch MOH outside of some SP

And BF3 is months out and theyve already started with the preorder/limited edition nonsense.

As much as I hate $15 map packs, they havent done this kind of bullshit with CoD, ever to my knowledge. Whatever nonsense activision has in store just cant compete with what EA has already done and shows no sign of slowing down. Am I honestly the only person that sees this?

a couple early unlocks for preordering is so much less awful than charging for map packs.

though the VIP system they use hurts, because you have to buy the game new. though I will give them this credit, EA/Dice dropped the price on BC2 in quick increments, something Activision has never done with the COD games. they are still trying to get 30 bucks on PC for COD4. You can snag BC2 for anywhere from 5-25(closer to 25 on console) bucks now that gets you all the access to VIP content.

Thats the way to kill the used game market, stop trying to charge 30 bucks for a game thats a year old

a year from now, I would bet that MW3 will still be at stores for 50-60 bucks, while BF3 will down to 30-40.

they are both sucking in their own unique ways

Wow, lots of info here, not sure how I feel about it.
Kotaku

The Modern Warfare 3 Files: Team Perks, No Nukes, New Killstreaks
Brian Crecente — It's a fair guess that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will follow in the footsteps of last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops, shattering sales records and bringing even more people to video games.

But it's typically not the single player campaign, detailed here, that draws in those record-breaking numbers. While many, including myself, enjoy the Call of Duty campaigns, it's the multiplayer that has managed to shift the Call of Duty franchise from a video game to something more akin to a sport.

People play pick-up games of Black Ops, Modern Warfare 2, even Modern Warfare, like they play games of baseball, soccer or shoot some hoops. Like it or not, consider it innovative or rehashed gameplay, the Call of Duty franchise has in many ways transcended what it is to be a video game.

So here's your first, unofficial look at what we can expect from the bread and butter, the heart of Modern Warfare 3 when it hits this fall. Do keep in mind that while the details of the game's single player campaign, first reported by Kotaku via inside sources and later seemingly verified with the official release of a trailer and matching levels, are likely mostly locked in stone. What is delivered with multiplayer could easily shift. Multiplayer is often tweaked after the game hits. It also receives a number of downloadable content packs post launch. With the advent of Elite, that's even more likely.

That being said, here's what our inside sources are telling us we can expect from multiplayer.
The game's multiplayer will be divided into cooperative Special Ops maps and traditional multiplayer maps. There will be no zombie modes in this game, not a surprise since zombies were introduced to the Call of Duty franchise by Treyarch and have, so far, popped up only in the Treyarch-developed games.

Special Ops will include both a survival, horde-like mode and a mission mode, with a total of a dozen maps and missions to choose from between the two.

As we've previously reported, there are 20 maps being worked on for Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer.

It is unclear how many multiplayer and Spec Ops maps and missions will come with the game and how many will be sold at a later date as add-on downloadable content.

Key to the multiplayer experience is the ability for players to level up their characters and unlock perks to modify the effectiveness of their equipment, character and enemy equipment. The multiplayer matches also include killstreaks, which are special one-time rewards that are unlocked after a player kills other players a set number of times without dying.

As could be expected, developers Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have been working to tweak both killstreaks and perks for Modern Warfare 3.

The biggest new addition to the game that we've heard of so far is the creation of Team Perks. These are perks that a team can work toward to earn. It is unclear whether this will be tied to clans or some other team system, but their inclusion could help push the game into a more team-driven title, something the premium Elite service is likely to tie into.

While we don't know the total number of team perks coming to Modern Warfare 3, we have been told four of them:

Stopping Power: Increased bullet damage.
Blast Shield: Unclear
Health Regen: Regenerate health over time.
Stun Protection: Prevent stunning from flash grenades.

New perks coming to Modern Warfare 3 include:

Blind Eye: This makes you immune to computer-controlled and player-controlled killstreaks. The pro version makes your launchers lock on faster and gives you extra bullet damage to vehicles.
Assassin: This makes you immune to UAV, thermal, and heartbeat sensors. The pro version also makes you immune to CUAV, EMP and no longer shows your name in red or the crosshair in red when you're targeted.
Point Guard: Every two assists count as a kill towards your killstreak.
Dead Silence: You make no noise.
Recon: Gives you a special kind of radar to spot enemies, most likely. We're not sure on this one.

We're not clear on how many or which previous perks will be coming to the game, but it sounds like the ones that do return will do so from Modern Warfare 2, not Black Ops.

There will also be a bevy of new killstreaks to play with in multiplayer. Here's the rundown on the latest thinking:

EMP Grenade: Temporarily takes out all area electronics.
Littlebird: A tiny remote-controlled helicopter.
Precision Airstrike: Calls in an airstrike on a targeted area.
Stealth bomber: Calls in a B2 Spirit to carpet bomb along a line designated by the player.
Remote Turret: A remote controlled turret.
Directional UAV: A UAV that can be directed into areas to scan for enemies.
Remote Mortar: Direct a mortar team using a zoomable camera view of the map to call in strikes.
Airdrop Trap: A booby-trapped airdrop.
Ammo Resupply: An ammo reloading airdrop.
Escort Airdrop: A protected airdrop.
Specialist Strike Package: This one remains a mystery to us.

While it's likely that some of the killstreaks will drop out or be added in, we've been told that the team has decided to remove the controversial Tactical Nuke killstreak from the game.

Other tweaks being looked at by the team include making sure things like exploding barrels not counting toward a player's killstreak tally.

We've also learned, unfortunately, that this latest Call of Duty still won't support dedicated servers, instead relying on the hosted servers found in previous iterations of the game. Dedicated servers were removed from the Modern Warfare games starting with Modern Warfare 2. (Modern Warfare 3 appears to be using DemonWare for player authentication, just like with Call of Duty: Black Ops.)

I'm glad that's all (or at least some) bogus as I wasn't really a fan of any of that stuff.

The idea of a team perk sounded kind of cool to me. But yeah, balancing could become more of an issue.

Here's my guess on the reasoning:

Since this is MW2 and not halo/gears/WaW you're fighting primarily against humans shooting guns, and not super armored aliens that shoot projectiles or bullet sponge zombies that don't shoot at all. You expect to be able to take soliders down in a shot or two, and not to constantly take hits from every random angle.

In order for that to be balanced with 4 players, there would have to be twice as many enemies on screen, and that would cause insurmountable performance issues.

I could be wrong though, and it could be a purely design choice. Does anyone recall how treyarch balanced the 4p campaign in WaW? Was there a significant increase in enemies or was it just a super easy turkey shoot?

depends on the difficulty.

but yeah they added more enemies. it was a turkey shoot on lower diffs, on the hardest it got quite insane. especially trying to storm the reichstag

Why no stopping power? There's a ton of complaint about everyone using ghost in blops. Why? b/c there is no perk that's more effective in blops in that first slot or even equal to ghost. CB and SP were both slot 2 perks in MW2. Most people preferred the ability to take someone down quicker than the ability to be more stealthy. I know I did. So, there were never any complaints of matches where everyone was running cb. idk, just my opinion of course.

Good riddance to SP, hopefully for good. Best thing black ops did. It was way overpowered. Gunfights are more satisfying without it. If you want more powerful guns, play hardcore.

After playing black ops for the first time in awhile last night, I think my decision to get this game hinges on whether last stand is in the game. Nothing more annoying than playing against a team full of last stand donkeys.

Last stand in regular mode isn't too terrible. Last stand in Hardcore is effing atrocious.

Man, I have to say that black ops has spoiled me on MW2 quite a bit. Although I can find plenty to complain about with both games, the fundamental shooting mechanics are just so much more enjoyable in BO.

In BO, with the less accurate and less powerful weapons, youre constantly getting into so many intense back and forth firefights. Every time I switch over to MW2, I'm stunned by just how much more brutal and unforgiving the game is. Everyone runs stopping power, and even the less accurate guns are like laser beams compared to BO. 90% of the time you get obliterated before you even know where its coming from, and half the players are running around with OHK quickscope cannons.

They said SP is out, but that could just as easily mean that everyone has SP by default. I hope MW3 has a little more finesse in the gunplay.

Guess I'll find out in three weeks.
