xantrium, what are your BIOS settings for your overclock? Great job by the way. I've only been able to get to 2.3Ghz with my system using stock cooling. Would love some tips...

Hi guys, I had my MSI board for almost a week. It took me 2 hours to get the thing to post. I found out the problem was that the MSI board didnt like the reset button plugged in to my Antec CS600 case. Every thing powered up, but no video or anything. The cool thing that MSI gives you is that 4 port POST LED / 2 Rear USB Port Panel. I found that really useful as it gives a series of green and red leds to tell whats going on when it starts to POST and whats wrong when it tries to POST.

Otherwise than the reset button, I havent had any problems with the MSI. There instruction manual is pretty coherent.

Im running on like a bare system for a week:
Dynex 20 Pin Power Cable 300 Watt PSU
512MB PNY 2700 Ram
AMD 3000+ Venice Stock
FX5700 128MB LE Vid Card (Regular PCI)

Im suprised it even powers up.

To knife my glitteter: I think the orange slot is either for a communications card like 56k modem or NIC? I thought the orange was dedicated either for that or like a sound card....I dont know if you could, I thought I read somewhere saying that other cards wont work with it or something.

However I have two questions...

Does any one know how to change the setting or jumper on the motherboard to always have power circulating the board so that it powers i/o accessories like a usb mouse?

I have a usb mouse that I could recharge if the computer shuts itself off with my old machspeed motherboard, because the power circulates to usb devices, does any one know how to do that with this MSI one? Is it something I have to change in the bios or a jumper setting on the board, it doesnt say anything like that on the manual.

To people who have the problem with the usb ps/2 mouse and keyboard, I heard some people say the msi board is picky on mixing and matching a usb keyboard and ps/2 mouse and vice versa, however I havent run into the problem. Im using a generic wireless usb mouse that doesnt need a driver, + a generic ps/2 keyboard and it worked great even when I was installing xp, i could use it.

2nd question; Did anyone use Kingston Hyper X 2x512 Dual Channel ram Pack? Any experiences with that?

Thanks in advance!

I updated the drivers and the BIOS on the mobo...used the MSI live update...went pretty smooth. But since then I haven't been able to get my mouse to work on the ps/2 input...only thru USB. Other than that I haven't had any major issues. I do want to try to OC my 3000+ venice but haven't been very successful. First time build for me so I'm a newbie to OCing. Any suggestions would be great

Hello y'all!
I am planning on buying MSI K8N SLI Platinum mobo for my new setup and I am wondering of something: I currently have a Creative SB LIVE 5.1 PCI audio card witch I'm very found of. The MSI board has an integrated Creative SB Live 24-bit audio. I don't really trust onboard audio hardware and I would like if someone would tell me if this onboard version provided by MSI is better than my current PCI card, mentioning that i don't need 8 channel audio.

And another thing: for the beginning my system will have the following configuration:

MSI K8N SLI Platinum
AMD athlon64 3000+
CORSAIR VS1GBKIT667D2
Maxtor Diamond MAX 10 160 GB
An older Maxtor with 40 GB IDE
LG DVD RW
An older ASUS CD RW
1x Leadtek WinFast PX6600 GT Extreme

Is this a good setup??

I am not an overclocker (yet) and I am planning on buying a 400W Antec, Akasa, Thermaltake or Enermax Power source, but i don't know if that will sufice. Whitch one do you recommend??? Is 400 W sufficient power for this setup?

Hi guys, since quite a few here have replaced the chipset cooler, could somebody please measure the distance between the holes on the original cooler?
It would be a great help.
I'm trying to watercool my tyan k8we, but only asus a8n and msi k8n waterblocks are available and nobody has been able to give me the measurement of the hole spacing. thanx.

Re: rasta4ian
I would believe that the on-board chip would be better than your SB live card. I'm running a SB platinum 2zx, which I feel should be better than the on-board sound.

QUESTION !!!
I discovered a problem with my voltage for my CPU continuously changing. Has anyone else ran CPU-Z and noticed the same thing? Also, windowsxp reports that I do not have any high-speed USB ports, though all of them are suppose to be 2.0. Again, anyone else see this problem?
Thanks!

Sometimes it's hard to tell. I've read some strange messages by people saying the exact same set up on a certain motherboard would require 435 watts but on antoher motherboard, it would require 485 watts.

I think 400 watts is a little dicey. I'd pick a little more than that.

Well, my board came a couple of weeks back with BIOS 1.4 installed and my new X2 4400+ booted fine first first time out. I was planning on using the onboard sound and it worked fine until I upgraded the BIOS to 1.8. I never flashed to 1.5 or 1.6. After successfully flashing the BIOS, the red reset button had to be used initially to get the system to boot. Ever since, the system boots and reboots fine, just as it did when 1.4 was installed. However, there is no sound using the Realtek 3.75 drivers. These drivers worked fine while the board was flashed with BIOS 1.4. According to MSI, BIOS 1.8 was designed for the newer video cards like mine. That is the main reason why I flashed the board. Reloading drivers and playing with BIOS settings did not help recover the onboard sound. In the interim, I am using an old SB Live card to provide sound via PCI slot #2 and have a support request into MSI. Has anyone upgraded to this BIOS while keeping good onboard sound? Thanks.

Just use 1.6 bios the 1.8 is buggy as hell.

Budman, thanks for the reply. I feel like I have been talking to myself on this thread lately. Is the loss of onboard sound the only bug you have found using 1.8? I have no other issues, but have not heard back from an MSI tech yet. Updating the BIOS is a bit like playing with fire. If the flash fails, you could be SOL. So, I would rather not go backwards. If tech support recognizes 1.8 with this significant bug, they will have to pull it and provide a new version, 1.9. I will publish their reply here as soon as I get it. For the time being, I am fine using my old SB card and may eventually upgrade to a variant of X-Fi to support my 5.1 speaker system. I just hope hitting the F1 key (shutsdown system) as the last step in the flash process or using the red CMOS reset button to get the system to reboot did not impair the AC '97 Controller.

No I am still on bios 1.6,Reading bad things about 1.8 kept me away. looks USB is not working ok with the bios.

As for flashing back i never had any problems when flashing from windows using Winflash.

Hope flasing back to 1.6 fixes all your problems.

MSI responds regarding BIOS 1.8:

"Dear Customer,

We have not encountered any issues with updating bios to version 1.8 and losing sound if can please flash back down to your original bios version but if have updated driver as well also please try updating the NVIDIA system drivers for the chipset also if can try another installation of windows it maybe considering the bios update as a major upgrade and having an issue with the sound driver Thanks

I have written back:

"Short of flashing back down to BIOS version 1.4, I have tried again to update the nVidia chipset drivers (6.66), the Realtek AC '97 CODEC drivers (A3.76) and did another repair install of Windows. "Multimedia Audio Controller," the onboard sound device, is still not listed in "Device Manager." Without it being recognized, I am sure the Realtek drivers will not install. You seem to be saying the "Multimedia Audio Controller," is listed in Device Manager and working with the Realtek drivers, using BIOS 1.8 on your test bed computer with the K8N Neo4 Platinum (MS-7125). And, is your test bed using WinXP Pro SP2? If true, why would rollback of the BIOS fix my issue? And, why would you recommend rolling back to BIOS version 1.4 when there are also versions 1.5 and 1.6 between it and 1.8? Are there similar issues with these versions? If you can duplicate my problem in your lab, then BIOS 1.8 will have to be pulled and replaced by a BIOS 1.9, correct? Thanks."

MSI responds:

"Dear Customer,

As stated have ran across this issue but if the device is not seem by windows then would indicate is bad but first check if bios is detecting it on boot up check the PCI device listing just before system starts booting from hard drive if do not see the Multimedia device there then would seem to have gone bad but you can verify but flashing back down to any of the previous board bios may have thought you had 1.7 and were going to flash back to it but please do try version 1.7 as stated their have been no reports of this issue before just yours as of now but please do try if same then you would need to send the board in under a RMA so it can be repaired or replaced Thanks"

Budman, in the link you provided, no one mentions my issue or any problem with USB. Perhaps, you read about USB issues on another thread? Regardless, you may be correct regarding a USB issue. I found my 4 back board USB ports to not be Hi-Speed USB 2.0. The board specs say they should be. However, I am unable to tell you if they were USB 2.0 when I was using the board with BIOS 1.4. That is because my OS was still at base level when I flashed to 1.8 and a minimum of SP1 is required to enable the ports to work at the Hi-Speed specification. I can, however, tell you the D-Bracket did recognize the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 drivers once I got SP2 reinstalled and are working correctly. I have a USB hard drive that sends up a balloon message in the system tray if it is not connected to a Hi-Speed port. The only real bug mentioned in the link was regarding a "Shutdown Bug." This may be a flaw in BIOS 1.8, but I cannot confirm it. In my case, I installed a new program last night and upon restarting the computer, it hung at the screen "Windows is shutting down...." I had to use the computer's reset button to get beyond it, but it did not cause Checkdisk to initiate due to an improper shutdown of Windows. I found this hang to be repeatable. I then uninstalled the program and did a complete shutdown of the system via Windows. Shutdown was normal. On the next startup, I did a Restart and it was normal again. So, was it caused by the new program or the BIOS. Another mystery. I have done several reboots since with no hangs. Thanks for the tip on WinFlash. I'll give it a try. --Thanks.

My response to MSI:

"On the third screen during bootup, I checked the PCI Device Listings and it does reflect a "Multimedia Device" using IRQ 11. That line also said Bus #1, Device #7, Func#1, Vendor/Device# 1102/0002 and Class #0401, if that is of any help to you. The Mass Storage Cntrlr, Serial Bus Cntrlr, RAID Cntrlr and Network Cntrlr were also on IRQ 11. However, I still do not have "Multimedia Audio Device" listed in Device Manager and there are no IRQ conflicts with any of the devices listed. I have attached a photo of my Device Manager to see if it can provide any clue for you with my problem. There is no BIOS version 1.7 offered on your web site: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=637&kind=1! Perhaps you mean for me to try BIOS 1.6? Thanks."

MSI's response:

"Dear Customer,

Sorry you are right it is Bios version 1.6 please do flash to it and see if sound device is detected again but if is not detected is bad. Also if you have not try flashing bios again and right after flash shut down and clear CMOS make sure that you unplug power cord form power supply when clear then see if sound is there Thanks"

My response:

"Well, it does appear my hardware is working just fine now that I have downgraded to BIOS 1.6. Windows found the new hardware, "Realtek AC '97 Audio" device and installed it on my initial boot up with BIOS 1.6. It also installed the MSI Sound Manager icon into the system tray automatically. I simply reinstalled the driver, A3.76, and sound has been perfect ever since I rebooted out of the setup program. It is quite clear to me BIOS 1.8 is not ready for prime time! I recommend you pull it off your web site right away. In addition to the sound issue, I found the four back board USB connectors stopped providing Hi-Speed USB 2.0 speed! I was able to verify this using a USB hard drive which gives a balloon message in the system tray whenever it is not connected to a Hi-Speed port. Also, while you are at it, check the BIOS 1.8 out for some sort of "shutdown" bug. I read another forum message where someone was experiencing this and so was I. Specifically, it occurred following the routine installation of software where a reboot was required once setup finished. The restart hung on the page "Windows is now closing...." To recover from this required the use of the computer's reset button. I found the computer hung on subsequent multiple restarts. So, I uninstalled the program and shutdown the computer from Windows. This went smoothly. Subsequent reboots worked fine, but I think this is probably BIOS related and you should do further testing to come up with a BIOS 1.9. Regards."

Well guys, the bottom line is that BIOS 1.8 is FUBAR!!! Budman, thanks for the tip again on using Winflash. I used it to downgrade to BIOS 1.6 and it went very smoothly.

Case, your problem sounds very similar to a freeze/lockup issue I was having recently. At first, I thought my video card was causing the problem by overheating (it has a non-functional fan), but it ended up being a bad hard drive. I would use the disk utility from your hard drive manufacturer and do a thorough scan to see if your drive has any defects.

Luck for me, just before I found this defect I had moved all my data to a new 250GB mirrored set.

Hi all,

The bios 1.8/3.6 are not on MSI website anymore.
Looks like they finally agreed that they were buggy.

Bios version 3.7 now available

Cheers.

Another problem with 1.8 is that it's missing the 180MHz memory index (i.e. 9:10 divider). I noticed this because I just happened to be using that divider! Is this still the case with 1.9?

I heard roumors that the BIOS version that comes with the MSI k8n SLI Platinum when I buy it does not have the support for Venice core A64 processors. Is this true??? That means that i will have to upgarde the BIOS right after I buy the MOBO???

I dont know about the SLI series, but I had a Ultra...and it said it did not support venice cores, but it worked for me. When I first installed and powered the bios said that it was an unregonized AMD 64. However I could still install windows and all my programs no problem. A week later I decided to update the bios. After I downloaded the newest bios the mobo then recognized it as a Venice.
