If anybody's interested, I modified the 1.B BIOS to include v5.3.14 of the Si3114R5 BIOS instead of v5.2.09 which normally comes with it. I've tested it on my own system (yeah, that was nerve wracking) and it worked perfectly, including leaving my RAID10 array on the Si3114 controller intact.

I don't understand how it could go from running great to not booting period. Any suggestions? Different BIOS?

My setup in one of my rigs is pretty similar to yours and I run mine at 250ht stable for months now. What's different is the ram timing. Try loosening to 2.5-3-3-7 1T.

Hello everybody, I have a question about RAID'ing all 8 SATA drives on this board...

I am planning to build a small database server using MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, NOT SLI one. It is going to run W2K and MS SQL2K.

I want to use all 8 SATA drives and I want to have 4 x RAID1 arrays (e.g. 4 MIRRORED arrays). I do NOT plan to use any STRIPING (RAID0, RAID10, RAID1+0) or any RAID5, just mirroring.

The MSI's web site has a little bit confusing information:

.....
NV RAID (Software)
- RAID function work w/ ATA 133 + SATA H/D or 2 SATA H/D
.....

Specifically, "2 SATA H/D" is confusing.... I want to stick 4 SATA H/Ds to this controller, and 4 SATA H/Ds to another one, and all should be RAID'ed

Can somebody confirm that all 8 SATA drives could be RAID'ed on this board?

Many thanks,
Alex

I have four drives running in a RAID10 array on the Si3114R5 controller. You shouldn't have any problems making 4 RAID1 arrays.

Thanks Ryan,

all my confusion was created by MSI's website

I was never concerned about Silicon Image's RAID on this board, because MSI's website is clear about Silicon Image's RAID:
...
Silicon Image's SATARAID5 supports another 4 SATA ports(SATA5-8). Transfer rate is up to 150MB/s
- RAID 0 or 1, RAID5, RAID10, and JBOD groups are supported
- Support up to 4 SATA devices connected to a single controller
...

However, I was concerned about another RAID controller on this board, e.g. Nvidia RAID that comes as part of Nvidia chipset.

This is again quote from the MSI website above:
.....
NV RAID (Software)
- RAID function work w/ ATA 133 + SATA H/D or 2 SATA H/D
.....

They say "2 SATA H/D"... I know that may look stupid, because they clearly have 8 SATA sockets on the board... But still they clearly talk about 2 SATA for Nvidia RAID. That may be just a spelling mistake or may be for a reason... Like if you use PCI-E then you cannot use 4 SATA on the Nvidia RAID, becuase they use the same chipset resources or whatever (I am just speculating though ...)

Ryan, if you do have few spare minutes, could you check the Mobo manual? Maybe MSI is more clear in the manual...

Thanks again,
Alex

P.S. I was not able to find a manual d/load for this mobo from the MSI website... I would check it myself otherwise

Ryan,

thanks a lot for your help! The manual is really what I needed. So far it looks like it is indeed possible to have all 8 SATA drives RAID'ed. However, I have not finished the manual yet

If it's TinyBGA, go to Anandtech and dig out his review.

There seems a problem with the core voltage regulator on my motherboard. Sisoft Sandra shows the following statistics for the voltages:

----- min avg max
Vcore 1.39 1.42 1.47
3.3v 3.22 3.25 3.30
5v 4.89 4.93 4.97
Standby 4.36 4.41 4.46

Vcore is set to 1.46 in the BIOS, which is 8.3% over the stock voltage of 1.35v for AMD 64 San Diego Core 3700+.

The power supply is an Antec TruepowerII 550W. It's 5v and 12v supplies are stable within +- 3%. The Vcore fluctuation of 0.08v is very high. When Vcore was set at the stock voltage of 1.35v, it still fluctuated by about 0.08v and the average was about 0.04v lower than the setting. Since Vcore is regulated by the mother board, I think there is a problem with the motherboard. Should I request an exchange of the board?

 Well....Supernoob comp builder here, 1st post. Haven't started build yet.

This is a long one, but rather complete, so please forgive.

Please tell me that the MSI Neo4 Platinum MB I purchased as a B-day gift to myself two weeks ago wasn't a mistake? I've read so many positive reviews from experts and civi's, and the price point was great @ 114. I KNOW that the A64 3000+ Venice I bought sitting next to the new MB is a winner, but after finding and reading this most excellent thread, I don't feel good about tearing down my current system for what may be the most stressful, time-consuming, and expensive upgrade project I could have imagined.

I'm not currently a gamer, but with a system better than an XP1700+ and a fully integrated PC Chips MB, I could be. Mostly, I focus on audio/video encoding/burning, and the 3.5 hrs req'd. now for a movie burn is unacceptable, so along with a solution, I thought I'd upgrade entire system, without spending $800-1000 to "just get me there".

I'm getting the impression that most of the build/BSOD/shutdown/auto-restart/game problems stemmed from faulty BIOS versions, overclocking(which I'm interested in), and incomplete product compatibility info.

It's almost as if MB manufacturers just can't wait to get their profitable product out into the hungry, trusting marketplace, even though it was obviously still in it's "beta" phase. Is it flaming to tell the truth? Or, have recent BIOS revisions "fixed" most all of the problems I've read about, in which case, I don't have much to worry about?

I bought this MB because of the excellent reviews by so many ppl, and because it should allow for substantial future upgrades. And, it looks awesome as well.

Here's what I've filtered out, and will someone please reassure me about this build, or tell me not to waste my time:

---drivers from nVidia are better than MSI Update, and STANDALONE is perhaps the
best way to go

---BIOS v1.6 may be best for OC potential of the Venice cores

---disable nVidia Firewall

---verify/set suggested memory timings

---it doesn't like double-sided DDR mem modules

---psu should be 420w+, and 20 pin connector fits just fine

---for NB fan problems, best to just get something like the Vantec Iceberg cooler

---120mm case fans are a very good idea

---USB keyboard over PS/2 is definitely a good idea

That's all I've got so far, except for the most important fact: How many ppl bought this MB and had virtually no problems whatsoever, either with the original build/startup, or with lasting durability. What's the percentage there? Would MSI be proud of that statistic, since they put the board out there? I know I'm just panicking....please set me straight.

Thank you, and apologies in advance to MSI.

( Today's my birthday )

I've been using mine since last September without issue. I started with an Athlon64 X2 3800+ and am now using an Opteron 165. I have 2GB of PC3200 DDR (2x1GB) and they've always worked fine.

I'm using the 1.B BIOS (the modded one I posted a page or two back), but I personally have no experience with BIOS revisions earlier than 1.9, so I can't comment on v1.6.

Thanks, RyanVM. I have read several reports of ppl whose setup went fine.

Here's what I'm lookin' at:

The Neo4 MB, and the Vantec Iceberg NB cooler
Athlon 64 3000+ Venice, with
2x512 MB DDR400 mem.
PowerColor X300SE HM 256
psu of around 450
new, well-ventilated case, with
a couple of 120mm fans.

I plan on following the MSI Manual, with some changes here and there, all from this forum, which has been extremely helpful in my planning phase. This thread is so cool, and I think I've learned a great deal that will hopefully ensure a problem-free setup.
I hope to avoid an RMA.

What is the latest BIOS version, or is the 1.B you mentioned a better choice for stability? I won't be overclocking until after a few months of intense use, and then maybe I'll think about it, but I may not even go there. I just want stability, strength, and reliability....that's all I'm concerned about. I shouldn't expect to have any problems.

I personally haven't had any stability issues since I got a BIOS which properly supported the X2 processors (when I bought mine, it didn't and the board was flaky as hell). 1.B is working great for me, as did 1.9 and 1.A.

Thanks again, Ryan. So, can I assume by what you're saying, that the recent BIOS revisions over the last year have "fixed" most of the faulty setup problems? I am a noob, when it comes to comp builds, but I'm not careless (anymore), and I truly appreciate your responses. If my assumptions are correct, I would think that by now, I shouldn't have any major difficulties setting up my "new" system. Would you agree with that, considering all the BIOS revisions which have occurred up to this point? Can I safely assume that most of the "bugs" which plagued the earlier setups, simply don't exist anymore?

And again, thanks for being there, Ryan. I realize that I'm tagging onto a thread which has just about spent itself, and I hope that by now, "things" have settled down enough for me to experience a relatively smooth setup. Any other advice would be very generous of you, even though you are obviously running a system much more advanced than what I will be running. Thanks again, Chuck.

I've finished ordering the rest of my new setup, so here's what I'll have:

--- MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum MB
--- AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice CPU
--- Corsair VS Dual Channel PC3200 DDR400 CAS2.5 (2x512MB)
--- Powercolor Radeon X300SE HyperMemory 256MB (128MB on-board)
--- NZXT Trinity Classic Series windowed case, with PSU upgraded
to a Logisys PS500MSBL 500W ATX, and an add-on 12cm fan
to start out with 3 case fans (2x80mm,1x120mm).

I think I researched all the parts fairly well, reading as many user reviews as possible
to make my decisions. I realize that I could have easily spent more now on individual components of a higher quality, (other than the mobo of course, but I can and will upgrade components as the need arises in the future. That was the main reason I selected this particular mobo. For now, if all these components come together and fire up, I'll be a very happy man!

If you're serious about video editing, I'd put an X2 on your short list of upgrades to make in the future, and possibly a memory upgrade. But I'd certainly say you're taking a nice step up from the old setup

Thank you, Ryan. And an X2 and more memory would certainly be 1st on list. I know that would help a lot. I may opt for a huge (250Gb) SATAII HDD 1st, to get away from the 80 and the 40 I have now. Shoot, with a mobo like this, the future looks bright!

I've made a modded v1.C BIOS for the K8N Neo4 Platinum. It changes:

NVPXE ROM version 212.0491 to version 215.0503
NVRAID BIOS version 4.84 to version 5.50
Si3114R5 RAID BIOS version 5.2.16 to version 5.3.14

I've tested this on my own Neo4 Platinum (posting from it right now ), and it works perfectly. As always, feedback is welcome!

"They" say that you shouldn't flash your BIOS if you don't have any problems, and I'll assume that that's the case with you as well. It seems that the most current BIOS for this mobo is 1.9, and if that worked well for you, and it seems to work well for me, then you wouldn't even suggest that I flash with your modded BIOS, right? No offense.

I am hopping that someone on this forum can help me out.

I have been running a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum MB with RAID 0 and a AMD FX55 for a while now with no problems. I recently bought two new HD's that I wanted to add (in addition to my current Raid 0 configuration). I am able to hook the drives up and see them fine in either the NVRaid Bios Tool or the Sil Image Bios Tool (I have tried using both chips each with the same problem). I have set the drives up as a mirrored RAID 1 and the bios shows them to be working healthy. But windows never finds the drives. I don't think this is a hardware issue but I am hoping that someone on this forum might have encountered this problem before. I am currently booting off of the RAID 0 drives so I don't think this is a driver problem. Also windows device manager sees the SIL and NVRaid chips as functioning properly I just cant detect the drives.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Rgds,
Nuggs.

You need to go into computer management (in the administrative tools control panel folder) and initialize & partition the drive to be able to use it.
