No reason to be scared, I have a Antec TruePower 380S (20 pin) plugged directly into the board.

1.21 is working fine for me so far. The big change in 1.21 is the CPU voltage options - it allows for higher % over VID. It's neat because the lower you set VID, you can choose higher and higher over VID percentages. I've set VID down to 1.3-something and was able to choose a % over VID of 23.3%. So this does 2 things - increase your available max CPU voltage (of course), and allow for some very fine increments to your voltage bumps if you play around with both settings. If you only need an add'l .01 volt to stabilize your OC, you can get it.

I agree on the memory voltage bit. If I give my Ballistix the 2.8v it's spec'd for, the selection flashes red!! And I can only go up .05 more from that setting as well... :frown:

I am running a Thermalright XP-90 which seems to work great.

Also my panaflow fan shows zero RPM's and I do have the three wire tail for the fan. Not sure why it doesnt show a speed. Anyone else have this problem?

Not all Panaflos support RPM monitoring even though they might have a 3 pin tail. Only a few do, the ones designated "1BX". In the 92mm family, the low and high speed models can be found easily enough with tach, I've heard reports of medium speeders with tach showing up here and there but they seem to be scarce. If you look at the first series of numbers/letters on the fan label you'll know what you have. Examples:

7L04DD-1BX <- This is an RPM monitoring fan

5126ED-1A <- This is not

0L12BT1-1J <- This isn't either

Hope that helps.

Thanks I will have to look at the numbers next time the cover is off. I would really like to have the safety of having it monitored. I might have to get a different fan. Although it is nice and queit.

Painman do you know which sata ports are locked? I have had some boot problems but can overclock nicely in windows.

I really don't know, I've only used ports 1 and 2 on the NForce 4 controller to run a pair of Seagate 160s in RAID 0, but I haven't run into any trouble. Max FSB I've attempted to boot with is 270, got in OK (after over-volting the crap outta my CPU).

Well I plugged the Seasonic into the top 20 pins and the board posted! Yay! I am not in Windows yet as I am training a friend how to build a PC and he had to work, but he should be back today.

Hi, i have MSI K8N SLI Platinum and I have serious trouble with nVidia drivers. At least once a day there is a blue screen in WinXP, where is shown "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", STOP: 0x000000D1, its caused by NVTcp.sys. Im using latest nForce4 chipset drivers version 6.39 WHQL directly from nvidia.com. I think, it's problem of integrated nVidia networking controller. Are there any drivers, which can stop getting these errors?

i'm having trouble getting digital surround out of my Logitech Z-680s. I patched my drivers with update from 2/14/05 from MSI. I am getting only stereo sound. My logitech Z680 says "optical effect stereo" I believe with my Nforce2 it said "optiecal effect digital"

make sure you have windows set to run in 5.1 surround sound. Had the same problem with my Santa Cruz card, set in 5.1 in the drivers, but windows was only set ti 2 desktop speakers. Changed it to surround sound, and it worked like a charm

start -> settings -> control panel -> sounds/audio devices -> advanced and make sure that is at 5.1 surround sound, or whatever you have

doh, it was even dumber than that. I was so highly focused on the motherboard, so very highly focused, since that was the ONLY thing that had changed, that I didn't notice I had slightly loosened the analog cables and they weren't seated in the z680 control box....sheesh

hey all, I just built my first pc using this mb (ultra) and to my surprise I got it to work. I do have a couple of questions. I'm running 2 seagate sata (ncq) 80 gig hd's in raid 0 that appear to be working fine. my c drive is is showing up as 160 gigs (well, not quite, but you know). however in device manager, the disk drive is showing up as a scsi device. is this something I should be worried about? is there an easy way to remedy this? should I bother? am I taking a performance hit?

also, when I first powered up, the bios didn't see the hds while they were connected to the first group of sata connections (1-4), but did when I switched them to the second group (5-8). is this right/normal? btw, the hds show up as device 0 and 3. is this ok?

i'm running xp pro sp2 and so far everythings working fince. I'm not a serious gamer and I don't inted to oc. thanks in advance for any and all advice.

here's my new rig:

My system comes up with a RAM error on the Diagnostic bracket (all red except top right is green). This flashes 7 times and then posts fine. But is very annoying. I have tried reseating my ram, and testing it with MEMtest. Ram tests fine, but I still this problem reoccurs. I just replaced my K8n Neo 2 Platinum with this board, everything works fine but the post error mentioned above.

If anyone knows how to resolve my difficulties with this motherboard... here is my setup configuration... or Maybe I will go with DFI Ultra D instead...

MB:MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (nForce4 Ultra)
HD: 160GB WD IDE
CASE: ThermalTake
CPU: AMD64 3000+
RAM: 1x512 CRUCIAL BALLISTIX (other one is being RMA'ed)
VIDEO: 2mb Rage PCI (waiting for x800xl
SOUND: Onboard
POWER: Enermax 420 Noisetaker
DVD/CD: Liteon 8x DVDRW
FDD: NONE

I still wonder if the MSI or the DFI is better... Anyone know if there is a roundup out there with these boards reviewed?

OK... turns out my computer was rebooting on its own because of IRQL_not_less_or_equal blue screen of death. I just bought this MSI Neo4 board about a week ago. Sometimes, this BSOD happens 10 minutes after I boot up... sometimes a few hours later. Since I just put together all the parts for my brand new computer, I'm having a hard time isolating where the problem is coming from. I tried running memtest86+ and my memory seems to be fine... Ran prime95 for a few hours and no errors there either. I'll try disabling the onboard sound tonight to see if the video card was sharing the same IRQ as the onboard sound. I have Windows XP Professional SP2 installed with all the current nVIDIA video and chipset drivers. I don't have any extra peripherals installed except the ones that came with the mobo. I am not overclocking yet, so no heat issues here. My CPU is running at 30 degrees Celcius. No idea how hot the NB is because there is no temp sensor, but it should be cool enough with the NB fan going 7000+ rpm. Anyone else having problems like this???

Hi, I have the same problem, newest nVidia drivers and getting BSOD's (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). It's definitely problem of nVidia drivers (nvtcp.sys), when using nVidia Firewall / nVidia ethernet controller. Only way how to solve this problem now is using other lan card / software firewall. Or just wait for new drivers and hope, they will solve the problem.

I thought I read about the 4x PCI-E slot on this board somewhere, but I cannot seem to find it now.

Is that 4x slot capable of accepting a second PCI-E video card, or what exactly is the advantage of the 4x slot here instead of 2 single 1x PCI-E slots like on several other Nforce4 boards?

Sorry if this is the wrong topic to ask this...

On the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI, does the 2nd video card gets close to the chipset fan in SLI mode? I have the BFG 6800GT and was wondering if it was a problem in the future when I plan to use SLI. I'm just afraid I won't be able to plug it in if it inteferes with the chipset fan. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I had the same exact problem. Go to www.nvidia.com and download the nForce 4 STANDALONE drivers. It has a different set of ethernet card drivers than the unified one. I haven't had a problem since replacing the ethernet card driver.

It's very close but it was designed to not hit. The only reason I would worry is if you decide to switch the chipset fan out for a taller one. There's probably 1-2mm clearance between the card and the fan as is.

The problem is, i have Windows XP - nForce4 Standalone Kit (6.39). I tried both english and international but no difference. Please, can you tell me the version of yours NVTCP.SYS? Right click on "WINDIR"\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NVTCP.SYS, properties -> version -> file version. My NVTCP.SYS version is 1.00.00.0468 and this version is doing this "DRIVER_IRQL..." error.

I used my laptop to burn a CD with the newest Geforce drivers directly from the nVidia website as well as the standalone kit Nforce 4 from the nvidia website. I booted into windows and let everything settle down. Then I ran both installs and rebooted only once at the end. I haven't had any trouble. The version on that particular file is 1.0.0.468. Somewhere later on down the road, windowsupdate.com grabbed a Marvell driver for the second ethernet port.
