Is anyone having problems with the audio on the Neo4 Sli? randomly I get lots of distortion..

I have tried different speakers and no luck, seems to be the soundblaster device.

Alrighty, maybe i'm a moron, but I have a Zalman 7000B-Cu and to install it I have to change the back plate, so I go to change it and the MSI one won't come off. I have unscrewed both screws and the damn thing seems stuck. I'm sure there is some trick I don't know so I thought I'd ask.

Thanx in advance.

The way to remove your backplate from the motherboard is to heat it up with a hair dryer and gently pry it off -It worked for me with my Zalman 7700

And the guy with UT2004 rebooting look here
http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/sh...74&perpage=30&highlight=&pagenumber=10

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

on the last line -noexecute=optin -needs to be noexecute=alwaysoff
go to my computer properties -advanced -startup and recovery-edit

DEP and athlon 64 driver problem

Thanks man. I thought I was the only one with this problem with UT2004. Its a shame no one can get it to work.

Ok. I downloaded and installed the Nvidia standolone kit. Now I can't connect to the internet.

I have the same problem. I got the blue screen with the same IRQ problem, then I downloaded the standalone driver from nvidia, and installed it. After rebooting, neither network port works. After playing UT2004, the system crashed, and now I cannot get sound (from my Soundblaster Augidy2 Platinum) either. I reinstalled the standalone nvidia drive, the Marvell LAN driver, and the Audigy drivers. I'm stuck and contemplating reinstalling XP all over again. Any ideas?

MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum (non-SLI Ultra chipset)
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (the rare 939 version, which is a 3500+ with 800mhz HT speed)
2 x 512MB Corsair blue series PC3200 RAM
ATI Radeon X800XL
Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Promise Ultra 100 PCI IDE card (I have 4 parallel ATA HDs)

Dont reinstall yet. Just do the windows system restore thing back to a time before you installed the standalone kit and it will connect to the internet again. I went to the link that dring posted and I guess that there is a compatibilty issue with the A64 nividia and UT2003/2004.

What memory is best to use, with K8N Neo4 Ultra

I see people using PC3200, PC3500, PC3700, PC4200. I fuzzy on this, but the board specs say DDR400. Is the Corsair 4400C25 pc3200 or pc4400?

I looked at the PDF with the specs, but it doesn't say anything about that.

Can you use PC4200 or PC 3500 in the board?

Sadly, I don't think system restore is on. I'll have to see if it was.

Can someone tell me if the BIOS POST will report memory running in dual channel. It would on my P4 motherboard but my new Neo4 doesn't say. The total reported is correct but it would be nice to know its working properly.

Also, I read the memory chart showing the use of single sided dimms vs. double sided. I have 2x512 Giel value 3200 (double sided) . I wanted to add another 1 gig for a total of 2 but I read it will run at 333mhz not 400mhz. Any one know how that will affect performance ?

Can you overclock past the 333 limit?

Anybody know any good deals on single sided dimms?

Can someone please clarify the differences between the SLI vs the NON-SLI Neo4(plat) motherboards. I know of a few obvious differences i.e. Pci slots, pci-x slot, and the onboard sound but is there anything else that would make one board different and/or superior to the other.

Just wondering because my new system is not going to ever be SLI im using a Radeon X850XT and I have the option of the SLI board with on board sound or The NEO4 board without SLI and i pay a mere 7bucks more for a nice soundcard with it.

By default the board will show some lame pic while booting, but if you disable that (like 99% of folks do), it will show the usual memory being counted, processor type, and lastly (I believe after all the memory has been counted) the memory latencies, cycle delays, and whether or not you're in dual channel. The clue is the 128bit interface (64bit is single channel). I don't know if all 939 boards do this, but the two I've used (including the NEO2 Platinum and the NEO4 Platinum (non-SLI) do).

Limitations regarding 400mhz memory and number of banks filled is one with the processor itself (home to the memory controller), and I read some CPUs can in fact work at 400mhz with all four slots filled, but that is not supported, as 333mhz is all that's supported with four filled slots (assuming ram that's double sided). Finding Single sided RAM can be a chore, and selling your current RAM and buying two 1gig sticks (at the inflated price they go for) may be your best option (I'm not 100% sure single sided RAM will guarantee you 400mhz with all four slots filled). As for the performance boost, few apps run significantly faster with 2gigs than 1gig, though two channels of DDR333 shouldn't be much of a drop from two channels of DDR400. Either way, you likely won't notice too much of a change, and the cost (and trouble) associated with it likely won't be worth it outside of rare circumstances.

You mentioned the nice soundcard (SB Live 24) which comes with the SLI card, which is a huge improvement over the non-SLI board (which I bought because I was a moron who didn't wait for the SLI boards to drop in price). The SLI boards are 'limited' to the two PICe 16x slots (typically used for graphics, thus leaving none free), and the non-SLI board has a 1x and a 4x (running at 2x) slots. In theory, you could use the SLI board with the 850XT in the main PCIe slot and any other PCIe card (RAID adaptor, network card, sound card?) in the other. This may prove moot, as the board has everything else on board. Unless you are pessamistic about the reliability of the SLI board (it seems to be a wholel ot more complicated, thus more prone to failure), I'd get it, as the $7 gets you great onboard sound, and it should prove more versatile in the future (if you can afford a 850xt today, whats to say you wouldn't find the cash for two 6800 ultras or next gen cards in a year or so?). I still like my non-SLI board, and I don't really have any regrets, but $7 seems like a no-brainer. The rest of the board is pretty much the same.

You can use anything greater than PC2700 (DDR333) with the board. PC3200 (DDR400) is in theory the max supported by AMD/Nvidia/MSI, but you can use faster RAM to overclock (or if you want, you can use faster RAM at stock DDR400 speeds). In general faster RAM can take the place of slower RAM (and if you're lucky, you can get slower RAM to run faster than spec), so if you have PC4400 (DDR550), you could use it in place of PC3200 RAM at stock speeds or overclock the memory bus (which allows you to do a whole lot of other things). If PC3200 is all you want, it's generally a heck of a lot cheaper than faster RAM.

I think you have me confused here. If I buy NEO4-SLI then all I get is the current onboard sound(which i know is really good...) but if I buy the NEO4-NON_SLI then I can buy a better soundcard than the onboard sound on the "NEO4-SLI" board for $7CDN ontop of the price of buying say just the "NEO4-SLI"

Example: (made up prices)
NEO4-SLI = $280
-OR-
NEO4-NON_SLI + Better soundcard than the above board = $287

I was the confused one. I thought you said the SLI board was only $7 more than the non-SLI one, if it is go for it.

I thought you were saying:

NEO4 SLI-$187
NEO4 no SLI-$180

They both have decent onboard sound, but the SLI one has much better one onboard. Of course, you could add your own sound card to either. I would never pay more for the non-SLI one, and

Well today I upgraded my sons machine using my replacement k8n neo4 plat. I had to up the ram to 2.75v in order for the machine to begin installing windows. I'm using kingston hyper-x low latency pc3200, the same stuff I've got on my fatal1ty running at stock voltage. I'm hoping that the neo will behave better than the board it replaced. To tell the truth I'm not at all impressed with msi and the only reason I'm using this mb is because zzf wouldn't refund my money and would only replace it with another one of the same kind.

Thuff,

Did you fix this problem? I am having the same problem: I can get past Bios screen, but right before Windows splash screen..system hangs, crashes, reboots, and repeats the process.

I have:
AMD 3500
Ultra 500W Power Supply
256MB Kingston HyperX RAM PC3200 (4 sticks) Tried different configurations
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI
64MB Asylum PCI Card
I have tried 3 different hard drives and they have this same result

Those of you having this problem, here's a little something I discovered. If you have any type of card reader drive, such as a USB 7-in-1, or one built into a HP USB printer, unplug it before booting up. I was experiencing the same thing, with the Windows splash screen refusing to come up on the first boot attempt, and then I got to thinking I didn't have that problem until I plugged in my USB 2.0 hub. I figured it was one of the devices plugged into my hub, and got it ont he first try when I unplugged my HP Photosmart 7660 printer. Booted 5 straight times with no problems. No big deal, I think to myself, I rarely print in color, I'll just hook up my external card reader from my laptop. No go, the boot problem came back. I guess I'll just live with reading my cards directly from my digital camera, or on my laptop. Or maybe even plug it in when I actually need it...except I'm too lazy, so I'll just live without it. *shrugs*

Anywho, that was the fix in my case. Maybe that'll help point some of you in the right direction.

OK, well I've had several weeks to play around with this board now... you know, I like this board. I like its features, I like its layout, it's running stable for me, I don't feel that it's particularly cheapo (except for the junk northbridge HSF, which I replaced with my own solution). But if MSI doesn't GIVE US A BIOS THAT ALLOWS MORE THAN A CRAPTASTIC 2.85 VDIMM, I'm gonna dump this board for the DFI or see what the ASUS A8N-E is like when it comes out. I know RAM performance doesn't affect A64 all that much, but I'm a perfectionist, I want everything tuned as well as it can be, and this is holding me back.

Maybe it's time to research the vmodding possibilities. There's a first time for everything!

Just checking did you mean this?,because you can get UT2004 to work fine. Some people
had luck with the new patch. It did not work for me. Some people had luck with drivers other than 66.93.I had luck with this fix to disable DEP

http://www.evga.com/Community/messagebo....asp?TOPIC_ID=5503&SearchTerms=ttolton

I was talking about UT to do something about it and all the other games that use the same engine. I know there have been fixes but I don't feel like messing with it.

Hey All!
Built my second computer with this mb/athlon64 3200+ .
Downloaded Motherboard Monitor and must have set it up for the wrong board...showed cpu temp of 127C.

Then installed Core Center....showed temp int he 30's C

When I enabled MBM Core Center took the temp from there and from the 30's C went up to 127C same as MBM...Weird huh?

Guessing the cpu would be fried if that was the case?

Going to trust the Core program...perhaps that mbm version was for the nforce2 mb?

Thanks....pfd161
