If you are going SATA-I, definitely go Silicon. They are proven to be faster in reviews.

I don't know about SATA II tho

SATA II has nothing to do with the RPM of the individual drive. SATA II is nothing more then a new standard. SATA I drives will work on SATA II devices, and vice versa. As for the burst rates, these are still well below SATA I levels even with a 10K Raptor.

I thought it might be a bad mobo, but I RMA'ed it and the new one does the exact same thing. In a bare-bones setup (PSU, Mobo, CPU, Vid card). It powers on, yet no post beeps and the DLEDS never change from the first position. I've tested the ram in another machine, so it's not that. I've tried a PCI video card, still nothing. I'm curious if anyone knows if it's a PSU issue. I know the manual says a 20pin will work, but I can't imagine it's the CPU.

Any ideas?

Just because the RAM worked in another machine doesn't mean that it is good in this machine...it just means that the RAM is good. Would need more information to determine additional ideas to pursue if you haven't corrected this issue yet.

The manual is actually pretty good imo. If you are loading your OS on SATA drive, make sure you get the drivers installed first before attempting to load the OS. Oh...and for SATA drives, use the nVidia SATA ports, not the Silcone ports. As other have suggested, disable the USB Storage option. I would aslo make sure that you don't enable any of the Dynamic Overclocking, Cool & Quiet or Agressive timings...do that stuff manually once you have everything goin' smooth.

Good luck!

There are no SATA drivers that need to be loaded...just don't use the SI SATA Ports, use channels 3 & 4 from the Nvidia set. The drivers are only for the RAID setup, which should be disabled in the bios unless you are using this.

I was just thinking about this...so If I don't want to use a RAID, don't install the RAID driver? What if they are already installed? How do I go about using a SATA port...no RAID? I'm not sure how to initialize a SATA HD with no RAID having the drivers installed. Would I have to start fresh?

I currently have my OS on and IDE drive and had 2 SATA drives on RAID0...I want to have those HDs just as plain storage...no RAID. I'm paranoid of having anything striped (lost a bunch of stuff) and need the space so I don't want them mirrored either.

Since it appears that you are not booting from the RAID Array, and assuming that you have already backed up any information you had on the array, I would kill the array from the bios and then boot into windows. From there you should be able to use the admin utilities (manage) and see the physical drives. Kill the stripe set and reformat each as individual drives, or convert them to dynamic drives and have windows stripe them for you. They should then be available for use.

As for the drivers, let them be...they wont be loaded by the OS any longer. Just my thoughts.

I'm assuming it's good in this one as I tested it with the platinum version of the board and it was just fine (the board I'm having issues with is the non-platinum).

Popped in the same video card, ram, and my new CPU on the new mobo, and fired right up. So I'm betting it almost has to be the CPU. Gonna fiddle some more, just glad it wasn't something kooky I was missing somewhere.

Hi, I recently installed this board and have enjoyed it thus far. However, after installing ntune I am unable to see or adjust settings for voltages or fan speeds. Any ideas why this might be? Thanks!

I've been trying to figure out the 1t timing issue on mine. Everything else is fine...although it is slow to boot into windows compared to my Neo2.

I had to bump up the mem voltage and manually set 1T timing....doesn't it depend on the type of memory you're using?

Does the bios allow the board to fully detect the AMD Opteron 165? It does detect it as a unknow cpu. I did have to set up windows to get it stable. This board once I set it up with the drivers is awesome.

BTW,
Is anybody else running opterons on this board?

Can anyone comment on why, with increasing BIOS versions, MSI seem to be removing memory divider options?

After playing around with just about every bios available for this board, I can now say that I'm pleased with the performance boost from my Neo2. I'm running bios ver 1.9 and it now boots quick, allows for 1T timings and I'm currently running an opty 146 @ 322x9 with the memory on the 133 divider...really nice and quick system.

Hi everyone. Today, January 16th I have bougth the MSI Neo4 Platinum, I am very happy with it..seems to feet perfectly in my plans.

I have a question for the people that has it working. Which is the exacto BIOS that comes with the Motherboard? Is it 7125v1A or 7125v1B? I will be running an Opteron 170 or 175 and in the MSI page they say they support them after v1B, for what I understood... I don't have any other chip to use to update the bios before installing the Opteron, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

1st, go into bios and disable the "full screen logo display", i think under "advanced bios options".

now when you start up, you shout see the detailed info, and on the top left it should tell you the bios version. (its 1. something).

OMG I found the overclocking problem with venice cpus! Some cpus can't go over 240FSB, and the culprit is the bios revisions.

you need bios version 1.6 for venice cpus to overclock properly

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=637&kind=1

anything over that may not work, as I have tested 1.9 and it definitely doesn't

1.3 is also said to work, but you may have problems with it as it is older.

when you falsh, use the EXACT parameter (only if you use NEO4 platinum):

AWFL859G w7125nms.160 /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/f/r

for example, if my bios flash program and the bios file are in D:\temp

1. boot up with a bootdisk (you can just burn one if you have nero)

2. when a:> is loaded, type D:

3. now it will turn to d:>

4. type cd\temp

5. turns to d:\temp>

6. type in exactly: "AWFL859G w7125nms.160 /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/f/r" (2 spaces between the three parameter sections, without the quotes.)

7. the bios flash program should automatically begin. DO NOT TOUCH THE MOUSE NOR THE KEYBOARD, AND DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER!!!! OTHERWISE THE BIOS FLASH WILL FAIL AND YOU WILL END UP WITH A DEAD MOTHERBOARD REQUIRING RMA!!!

so if you have the overclocking barrier of 240FSB with venice cpus, give this a shot. worked for me

This has been a known issue and more are starting to surface with the rev "E" venice chips coming out. I can't get the 1T command rate to work with my venice, yet my other NEO4 works fine with my Opty 146...go figure.

i've had this board for nearly two weeks. great overclocker, happy so far, but i've heard that many of this boards have a problem with draining the cmos battery very quick, is this true?
and about the issue with the nb hs/fan and videocards that go over it, how bad is it? i dont know about this because it's my first pci-e mobo and until the x1900xt is out i got a 6200tc which is very small.

@ Tingc222: I use version 1.9 in combination with a Venice 3000+, my highest HTT was 332MHz... Never experienced any problems...

@ pacho108: Yeah, the chipset fan will be right under the graphics card... I have it too right now, with my GTX... However, temps are fine when overclocked, so it doesn't really matter much... Never had any problems with my CMOS Battery, and my comp is running for 4 months right now...

I just sent my 7125 for RMA after having it for 5 months. My NB fan died on me about 3 months ago and now CMOS won't hold settings after a shutdown. I was never able to get the board over 215 FSB so I'm hoping they send me a board that isn't suspect.

On a separate note, whats the best CPU cooler you guys are seeing out there? I'm thinking of stepping it up a notch from the stock CPU Fan & Cooler w/ AMD Athlon XP 3500+ Venice.
