People here are already calling the Bucs out of the playoffs? Haha, still 1 more week left ladies and gentlemen...it wouldn't be the NFL if there wasn't any crazy shit that can happen.
Do they control their own destiny? Nope.
That means they didn't take care of business. Period.
Freeman is as good as any other QB in the league, like it or not.
In Yards per Attempt (THE most important passing statistic, period) here are the top-10 guys:
1. Philip Rivers · SDG 8.7
2. Michael Vick · PHI 8.4
3. Aaron Rodgers · GNB 8.3
4. Ben Roethlisberger · PIT 8.0
5. Jay Cutler · CHI 7.9
6. Tom Brady · NWE 7.8
7. Matt Schaub · HOU 7.5
David Garrard · JAX 7.5
Tony Romo · DAL 7.5
10. Eli Manning · NYG 7.4
Jon Kitna · DAL 7.4
Joe Flacco · BAL 7.4
...
Freeman 7.13
In
the most important statistical category for quarterbacks in the NFL, Freeman can't even rank in the top half of starters. There is a backup QB who has a higher yards per attempt than he does.
He is near-elite in the number of INTs he's thrown, but that's the only category he's even in the top-3. In terms of QB rating, he's been good, but he hasn't been better than eight other guys in the league.
He's only close to the top in one statistic. There are a number of guys who consistently rank ahead of him. How is he the MVP by the numbers again?
We've lost 3 starters on the offensive line, got a bunch of rookie recievers, the offensive scheme is barely establishing it self.
Cry me a river. The Colts have seemingly lost every offensive starter they had and they're going to the playoffs. The Steelers have significant injuries on both sides of the ball. New England has injuries. The Falcons have injuries. The Saints have injuries. What's your excuse for Freeman again?
Freeman's got raw talent, anyone that says otherwise is a complete and utter fool.
Raw talent is a dime a dozen. You know who else had raw talent? Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russel, and Chad Henne. Talent doesn't get you anywhere in the NFL; smarts, dedication, and hard work do. Freeman might be an elite QB, but his talent is completely irrelevant. Either that talent will manifest itself into numbers (and wins) or it won't.
When you have people like Bill Billicheck, Jimmy Johnson, Tony Dungy, Drew Brees, Joe Montana, Warren Sapp and Michael Strahan holding a 2nd year player to such a high regard, you'd only be making a fool of your self to criticize Freeman's ability.
I don't even know where to start with this quote. Did any of these guys say "That Freeman, he sure is the best QB in the NFL right now?" Fuck no they didn't. And I hate to break it to you, but just about everyone on that list has a tendency to be very polite about their opponents. BB is famous for making the Cleo Lemons of the NFL sound like Dan Marino.
AND just because there is no case you can make for him being the MVP doesn't mean he isn't talented and doesn't have potential. Nobody is disputing that he's talented... if you bothered to read you'd see that most people here think he's a
good quarterback right now. A good season is not an MVP season.
Our defense, even with 7 starters out for the year still works decently with a bunch of UFAs and practice squad players.
Again, cry me a river. Every team has injuries. They're part of the game. You either overcome them and win, or you don't and you lose. That's how it works. The "well, if our team was healthy..." argument is bullshit. NFL teams get one shot to win every week with the players they have.
You either win or you don't, everything else is excuses.
Stats do not mean everything, the number in the win column does, and i bet none of you had the Bucs winning more than 3 games at the start of the season. You must feel pathetic looking at the standings now.
We're talking about the MVP award. Last time I checked, that award was called the
Most
Vaulable
Player. Not team. Not offense. Not defense. It's a single award given to a single player. Wins factor into that, but they are not the end-all. Would you argue that Trent Dilfer was the MVP of the 2001 season because his team won the Super Bowl? No. You wouldn't and you couldn't.
Winning teams don't necessarily have MVP quarterbacks. MVP quarterbacks don't necessarily field winning teams.
As for projections I bet nobody had Indy winning fewer than 12 games. I bet nobody predicted the Patriots would win 13 games. I bet nobody predicted the 49ers would be whatever their miserable record is. I bet few people picked the Eagles to dominate.
Projections aren't anything other than cannon-fodder for talking heads to drone on about during the off-season. They're worth even less now.
Also, i love how someone actually bothered to bring up the "easy schedule" bullshit, last time i checked, the saints has the 27th easiest schedule last season...What did they do? The won the fucking superbowl.
Which is more impressive, throwing for 400 yards and 3 TDs against the 1985 bears or throwing for 400 yards and 3 TDs against the 2010 Panthers?
Freeman has put up good numbers. He's done it against crappy teams. He's definitely made the most of the opportunities given to him, as any decent NFL quarterback should.
The post-season success of teams like the Saints has zero to do with Freeman's MVP candidacy. The point of talking about an easy schedule is that Freeman has put up his numbers against weaker defenses. There are QBs in the NFL who have better raw numbers against better teams. That is the point, not about their post-season competitiveness.
But hey, no problem, keep the bucs under the radar, because next year, shit is gonna break lose...The NFC south is the new monster of the NFL...better start getting ready for a beat down.
Whatever helps you sleep at night. The Bucs will probably be good next year, but that does nothing to further your argument that Freeman is the league MVP in 2010.
