There is that point, as well. I know Dungy is widely revered as an all-around great person, but I never really thought he was more than an average coach. He is brilliant defensively but I never got the sense that he knew offenses (Peyton was running that show), nor special teams. I think Dungy's hand-picked successor illustrates his overall mediocrity - Caldwell is one of the worst coaches in the NFL.
Before he was HC, Caldwell was the QB coach. OK, so let's think about that for a moment -- he "coached" Peyton Manning at his position. How do you think those conversations went?
CALDWELL: Let's start today's practice.
MANNING: OK. Man, I sure am thirsty.
CALDWELL: Oh? What would you like, Mr. Manning?
MANNING: Fruit punch Gatorade. While you're at it, can you get me a ham and swiss on rye, with spicy mustard? I need to study film and I'm hungry.
CALDWELL: Right away, Mr. Manning!
MANNING: Oh, Jim! I forgot -- go pick up my dry cleaning too. I have a commercial to film after work.
Honestly though, I do think Dungy gets a bum rap. People forget that he turned Tampa around. True, some of his best Buc players were holdovers from the Wyche era, but Dungy did shape that franchise up. I just don't think he has the fire to field a perennial champion. I'd hire him in a heartbeart to stabilize a team and point them in the right direction, but to get over the hump, you need someone with fire -- like Gruden.
