Doesn't need to be penalized in the game to be suspendable.

True enough, but even so, was there an Injury? Raymond is also not one with a reputation of nastiness, which makes a difference in these situations.

regarding the current Marchand/Salo kerfuffle;

YouTube

Same hit, one penalized one not penalized.

Oh, Shanny!

Raymond's was defensive. He ducked a hit. Marchand was trying to run him hard.

Marchand's was offensive. Marchand avoided playing the puck and targetted Salo. Salo hasn't run anybody ever in his career, probably the cleanest player in the NHL (has only 250 PIM in around 730 games and has never received a major penalty or suspension.

Shanahan even says if actually defensive or instinctive it's legit. Marchand's was neither.

That's why Marchand got 5 games. It was predatory. If you watch the video you see beforehand he actually punched Salo twice only a few seconds earlier.

EDIT: I find it funny the youtube poster didn't post the time Marchand did it last year to Daniel Sedin. Weird how he missed that one eh? and the fact that that one went unpenalized too?

That hit didn't look below the knees, More like between the knees and the waist,

Doesn't have to be below, was "in the knee area" and Marchand's arm actually is the first thing that hits Salo, in the knee. Shoulder hits right at the bottom of his hockey pants which is about 2 inches above the knee.

2" above the knee is not across or below the knees. The way Salo goes up and over shows the hit was above the knees.

Nice consistent rule enforcement!

Oh wait... guess not.

I literally just explained why there is a difference. It's clear as day.

Had Salo actually come in and tried to throw some monstrous hit on Marchand and Marchand had the puck and he ducked to get out of the way, thats fine.
Had Salo had the puck and it was a standard hip check, that would be OK too.
But you can see Marchand TURN into Salo to initiate contact WITHOUT the puck.

I don't know why this is so hard for people to understand.

Raymond ducked to avoid a hit, Raymond was the puck carrier, Marchand tried to hit him, hard.

Marchand ducked to flip Salo. Neither had the puck and Marchand avoided playing it. Salo never hits anyone hard.

Defensive = OK
Offensive = Not OK

Raymond = Defensive
Marchand = Offensive

You want to see Marchand actually do it defensively? See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06psuTFVFD4

That's doing it defensively. That's no suspension.

EDIT: Not to mention Marchand is a known dirty player (3rd disciplinary action in last two seasons) where as Raymond is not.

Meh, some days you're the hammer some days you're the nail. Bitching and whining about it only makes you sound like one of those gutless Canucks.

Last Saturday was their Stanley Cup game 7. They're nothing more than regular season heroes with an overpaid sieve/playoff choker for a #1 goalie, soft as charmin defensemen, and shrinking violet forwards who can't deliver 5-on-5. SCF games won't be played nor officiated like the gong show we saw last weekend.

Shanny has just set the bar for these kinds of hits. All we can demand now is consistency.

But we are 6th in the league in 5 on 5 scoring! And apparently Marchand was terrified that "soft as charmin defensemen" was going to run him! Not to mention the Canucks outhit them 24-17.

Too bad the softest of the soft Canuck Dmen is currently out with a broken thumb :| http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUYqTE3cnuQ

You sound like a sad/mad Boston fan. You can literally sense the anger building as you typed. Buck up! At least you won last year and have a good chance this year!

I loved listening to the Boston crowd chanting Luongo on Saturday. :awe:

And, pray tell, why would there be a sad/mad Boston fan? Bruins won the Stanley Cup, are doing well this year, and we didn't try to burn our city down. We're ahead in so many ways.

Why would the Boston fan be mad? That you won a pointless game only 8 months after they wiped the floor with you and your city?

You guys are the ones that nearly burned your own houses down in defeat.

I find that comment hilarious

Wow, its funny because I didn't even read this before my response

Pens lost again to Ottawa, 5 in a row. It was 4 to 1 in the second period and they had to pull Johnson and put in Fleury. Then Simon Despres gets hurt. I turned it off after that.

The only good news for the Pens is Neal only has a bruised bone in his foot and will come back.

shitty for pens fans, but at least the hurricanes arent your home team. as far as im concerned every 'canes win right now is just going to drop them in the draft; winning right now is completely pointless.

its kinda funny to see cunuck fans.. argue about cheap shots. let alone their team.. however, i am an avid bruin fan and a hockey player myself and we have enough head injuries as it stands and those types of hits cant be condoned/ supported. the retaliation alone will end careers as it has in the past.

dont get me wrong.. im all for a mean tough hit. to a degree

Devils are on pace to tie the record for shorthanded goals in a season, and I think they're also on pace to tie or break the record for shorthanded goals against in a season.

When they're killing penalties they've scored 11 and given up 15 (both best in the league).
When they're on the power play they've scored 22 and given up 12

At least when you add it all up, they're in positive territory.

I don't know why there would be a mad/sad Boston fan. That's why I said buck up!

But you guys do seem really, really mad.

Notice there is no Canuck fan calling Boston or their fans any names here or saying really anything bad about any of them? I even said I think they have a good chance to win this year. The worst I said was Marchand was a dirty player, which is well known throughout the league. He could be a great player if he would just use his skills and keep it clean. Then you guys come in and start trash talking Vancouver and it's fans. That = mad about something, or just sore winners.

See it's like this (on this board):

Canuck fan - "Marchand is a dirty player! Lucic is a good Vancouver boy though, and Thomas and Chara are classy players for sure."
Boston fan - "The entire Canucks organization and it's fans are garbage gutless whiners! HAAHAHAGHAHA WE WON LOSERS!!!!!!!!! GO RIOT SOME MOAR"

Marchand will miss 5 meaningless games, but at least it'll send a message that player safety is important.
