Speaking of Don Cherry, he was quoted as saying the other day "Outside of Detroit and Columbus, fighting has a direct correlation to points". So a friend of mine threw this together:

Seems his statement holds up

above is pretty interesting.. although if you think about it.. a good fight will rally the team

.. especially if the fight takes out a strong point of the opposing team

Does it?

You have four top teams spanning everything from fights little to fights lots with the median right in the middle. You've got like 7 second tier teams and the same thing, their median is right around the middle. The only thing you can say with certainty is that bad teams don't fight. I guess if you're lack luster in your play you're not interested in fighting.

ehh, I think you did not read the graph very well.

I must not be reading it very well either... seems the bulk of the teams are in the same area (# of fights), yet it's split between high and low amt of points (cancelling each out). If you look at it as a whole though, yes it goes diagonally up. But that's only because of 4 outliers.

oy. First remember he said "outside of Detroit and Columbus" so dropping the two biggest outliers.

Now compare a zero correlation regression line, basically a horizontal line through the middle. Now imagine a straight line from each team to that line... now repeat the same thing using the shown regression line... the avg distance is much shorter.

Nice to see Jimmy Howard back in action. Despite taking the "L" kid looked in fine form.

rutuu signed for 4 years, $19 million.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/articl...-19-million-extension-with-F-Tuomo-Ruutu.html
The deal will pay Ruutu $4 million next season and $5 million in each of the next three years in a deal that runs through the 2015-16 season. He would've been an unrestricted free agent after this season.
The 29-year-old Ruutu is second among Hurricanes skaters with 17 goals and fourth with 30 points in 57 games. He has 80 goals and 107 assists in 289 games with Carolina since being acquired from Chicago in February 2008.

well...meh. he doesnt really make anyone better, imo (whereas cole made staal better, for example). he provided some umph when he was with skinner/jokinen but he doesnt get to play with them much now and doesnt seem to do staal that much good.

so i guess theres a maybe that allen or spacek get moved, neither of which will bring anything special back or do anything for the team next year. which means ill get to see the same meh team, with 2 or 3 minor players changed, next year.

awesome.

Either I haven't been keeping up with NHL Contracts or that seems to be overpaying.

i agree. if they wouldnt pay 4.5 for cole, who has more 20+ goal seasons in the same time frame and worked better with eric staal on the top line, then i dont understand how rutuu is worth 4 -5.

dont get me wrong...i like rutuu, but i dont think he makes anyone on the team any better and he brings a more physical side to the game rather than point production

i also dont think gleason is worth what he got...the last 2 seasons for him havent been anything special, imo, but maybe that just comes from seeing him on a meh team.

pitkanen was worth more than 4.5, probably, but took that and stayed...wanted him to go too. id really like to see the team gutted, which could have been done over the last 2 season and by this trade deadline, but clearly hasnt happened.

Im a Nashville and Philly fan, i believe Nashville has a better shot to go deep into the playoffs than Philly this year. The damn flyers need some goal tending like none other, Bryzgalov is a good goalie but not worth what we paid for him and its impossible to build any confidence there b/c as soon as you loose a game the fans want your head.

Me too. I think I even created some new ones.

I was yelling too.

That whole play was epic, the very patient hold, then back hand pass from Lidstrom, a no look backhand pass from Zetterburg, then an absolute scorching of Suter, and a quick shot to the corner of the net. boom.

That problem can't be fixed with a new goaltender. The Flyers need to replace their fans.

bah, Wings looked like Nashville did last week, got into a defensive mode with a few minutes left. I knew that once they did that, nucks were gonna score. And with the wizard out, shootout was not gonna turn go well.

I was hoping the Avs were going to break the streak tomorrow. Oh well.

Hopefully Downie beats the shit out Bertuzzi or something awesome like that
