No, Smith is just a jackass. You haven't noticed him flopping around, exaggerating contact, and punching people in the head in post-whistle dog piles?

You must be a kings fan. The kings have been doing asshole-ish stuff the entire series.

Been out of the country for a week and haven't paid any attention to the playoffs since I've been gone. Wow Kings! Has any 8 seed done what they are doing right now?

People bitching about Mike Smith slashing a guy need to go pick up another sport instead. Hockey isn't for you. Yeah, sticking a guy like that is a little excessive, but I also don't have a problem with Smith keeping his porch clear. A whack like that makes everyone else think twice about putting a skate in the blue paint. By the same token, I wouldn't have much of a problem with someone running Smith for pulling that bullshit.

I'm guessing none of you remember Dave Brown crosschecking Tomas Sandstrom in the head. Sandstrom was a cheap bitch for years, but he cleaned up real fast after Brown cleaned his clock.

You're a fucking idiot. Brown wasn't even in the crease. You ever played goalie? That had nothing to do with "keeping the porch clear". That was a bitch move straight up by a goalie getting his ass handed to him.

Then someone from LA should take care of the problem. Period. The NHL used to be a league where the players took care of it and the fans didn't bitch about some extracurriculars. He didn't two hand him in the back of the head. He whacked him across the legs. I'd rather see a little of that stuff than not, because this game is meant to be played with an edge. There's a line and sometimes guys cross it, but it's not like he Bertuzzi'ed him.

If you can do without, the Swedish Elite League is always out there.

I have no problems taking care of business, but he straight fucking lumberjacked him with the narrow edge of the paddle, on the back of the knee where there's NO padding, when he wasn't in the crease. That was as big a bitch move as Bertuzzi's, Brown was just able to skate away from it.

AND he got called for diving! I stand by my previous statement.

I wasn't aware that Brown got called for diving. I do have a problem with that, especially so because Dustin Brown isn't flopping around like a Penguin out there. I don't think Smith got him that bad, but I also don't think Brown dove. Any time you get whacked like that and don't expect it, you go down pretty easily (I know from experience on that one). But as a goalie, with your team getting dominated, you need to do something to create a little apprehension.

But I still don't think it was that bad. Any time you blind shot a player, it's cheap to some degree, but not at all comparable to something like what Bertuzzi did. I'm not at all advocating that it was clean, but I am saying it's a part of NHL hockey that I'd miss if it were gone.

Watch some european hockey. Those guys are soft as shit and it's basically figure skating with a puck. It's awful, and each season the NHL tries to get closer to that. I don't like it.

This. So much. It's as if the NHL is a microcosm of the wussification of America (and Canada?).

I have no problem with it as long as Smith was penalized. He wasn't. Players risk penalties all the time trying to make big hits to fire their team up and sometimes they get away with it like Smith did.

In any case, 2 words sum up NY's 2 wins: Henrik Lundqvist

NEW YORK -- In a heated Hudson River clash that is threatening to become pretty nasty, the gloves were officially dropped Sunday when Rangers coach John Tortorella ripped the Devils, accusing them of selling penalty calls and skirting the rules.

Livid with Devils coach Pete DeBoer's postgame comments about Rangers tough guy Brandon Prust -- DeBoer said Prust was "head-hunting" on an elbowing play that left Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov shaken up -- Tortorella rattled off his own litany of complaints.

He began with two incidents involving Devils players -- a hit from Dainius Zubrus on Anton Stralman in the first period and Zach Parise's on Michael Del Zotto in the third -- and didn't stop there.

"I look at Zubrus' elbow to Stralman, I look at Parise launching himself into Del Zotto," Tortorella said. "Maybe if our players stay down on the ice, we'll get something."

Tortorella said his players are instructed not to embellish and hinted that he doesn't feel the same about the Devils.

"We tell our players 'Don't stay down on the ice, get up.' I hope ... I'll leave it at that," he said.

Tortorella also said he feels the Devils are using moving screens to free up Ilya Kovalchuk while on the power play.

"The picking on the power play, set plays, picking on the power play. We want to start discussing officials with the media, I have a long list here," he said. "That's a set play by Jersey, picking so we cant get to Kovalchuk to block a shot. You want some more ...?"

DeBoer was tight-lipped Sunday when told of the accusations directed toward his team.

In one word, DeBoer responded: "Comical."

Tortorella referenced Kovalchuk's first-period power-play goal in Game 2, in which the star sniper had a clear shooting lane. As Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky swung the puck from the point to Kovalchuk at the left circle, defenseman Dan Girardi got entangled with Devils forward Patrik Elias as he tried to shift with the play. After the goal, which gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead, Girardi threw up his hands in frustration and skated over to the nearest on-ice official, presumably to complain about what he felt to be a missed interference penalty.

"I brought this up already. It's a set play," Tortorella said. "They know we're trying to block shots on a pretty good shooter by them. It happened to Danny. I hope we look for it."

This isn't the first time the fiery coach has blasted an opponent. Tortorella, who has also been fined $50,000 for criticizing officials in two incidents earlier this season, engaged in a vicious verbal battle with DeBoer back in March.

The two coaches barked at each other both before and after the teams' final regular-season meeting on March 19 over an orchestrated opening-faceoff line brawl that featured six players dropping the gloves three seconds into play of the Rangers' 4-2 win.

DeBoer called Tortorella a "hypocrite" after that debacle.

Wrapping up his rant Sunday, Tortorella openly admitted his intent in unleashing his fury through the media.

"So there's some gamesmanship right there, huh?"

I'm with Tortie on this. Cry moar, DeBoer.

Guy had his head down the entire time, a good reason eurotrash like that wouldn't last 3 seconds in the NHL.
Why post in this thread if you are clueless about hockey? Kronwall has done this exact hit many times in the NHL.

What's your point? Obligatory 'stop crying when you're clueless about hockey'. Let me guess, you watch eurotrash hockey. So sorry if your delicate feelings were hurt.

Just pretty funny that you assume NHL players never would put themselves in a position to be hit like that. Kronwall is very well known to deliver hits exactly like the one posted. Eurotrash hockey? Go back to watching UFC buddy.

It doesn't happen nearly as often as eurotrash. Kudos to Kronwall for cleaning that fcktard's clock for not keeping his head up.

I agree with your comments in this thread, but I do want to point out that this shit is happening more in the NHL now. Players are putting themselves in really bad positions to take shots to the head or get boarded, thinking players will pull up because the rules will save them. Stupid shit like players turning at the last second to show the numbers, getting boarded, and then crying foul because they get injured. Same shit with guys putting their heads down. It's happening more and more, especially in the corners and below the red line.

And you know what? The NHL is obliging them. Yeah, they leave with a concussion, but the other guy gets suspended - shocker, it's absolutely not a deterrent to either party! What's the first thing they teach you? KEEP YOUR FUCKING HEAD UP. Suddenly the pros don't do it.

My favorite thing has been the resurgence of obstruction, though. I'm now off on a tangent, but anyone else see Pierre the muppet McGuire calling it "layering" instead of what it is, the neutral zone trap?

I'm a huge hockey fan, but I want to see this shit get played right. Part of me wants to see the owners lose a lot of money with a bad SCF matchup and possibly with the players holding out next year.

The "New NHL" is ridiculous.

You obviously haven't been watching the IHHL championships.

You mean starring Team Russia, basically an NHL roster? It's not a surprise.

Seriously, watch some of the domestic leagues. Outside of the KHL, it's not very physical. The SEL, the Swiss and German leagues are all very, very soft. I've seen some clips where a brawl breaks out and guys don't even know what to do.

European hockey is very different from the North American game. Or at least used to be. Now that NHL owners are dumping $7-10M a year on some of the top players, adjusting the rules to their game has taken priority.

Devils are playing really well in must-win games. Game 5 is pretty close to must-win, hopefully Lundqvist doesn't play like a brick wall again.
