IMO right now the top SLI mobo is the P5N32-E SLI and the top CF mobo is the DFI RD600. Those would be my reccomendations to people. This based on everything I have read up till now. The Striker Extreme and the eVGA 680i arent out of the running yet though. New BIOSes are still coming out on both sides. My money is on ASUS though for BIOS quality and quantity. nVidia may still suprise us though with their reference mobo BIOSes. Just my two cents worth.

Does anyone know if the ASUS P5N-E SLI has the same SATA data corruption issues as the other 680i motherboards?

Not one single issue with mine. I even brought my HD over from a P5N32-SLI Premium board with no issues. No repair or reinstall needed.

I think some people have reported issues with that board. However, I have this board and I haven't had any problems with it thus far.

I havent read of any yet. If it is its not having it on the same scale as the reference mobos. Wether thats due to it not being as widely purchased as the reference mobos or what I dont know. It seems to be getting the least amount of complaints of the 680i mobos so far. But again, that could be because of its lesser popularity.

Hey Mavtech, I am usng an Nforce 4 chipset now on this Epox baord. I have also ordered the 680i, and want to migrate my HD. Did you just uninstall chipset drivers before you pluged it into the 680i and windows did the rest? The you install the 680i drivers?

DaveBC, I migrated my Hardrives (3 SATA ones, 1 OS and others storage) from my original DFi NF4 setup to the new eVGA 680i. I initially just uninstalled the chipset drivers, video driver, audio and anything else that was directly related to the DFI NF4 board. I also used the driver cleanup utlitly searching for anything Nforce, ATI and Creative that Windows left behind. I then also used Ccleaner (crap cleaner) and just for fun ran that to clear out any other junk.

Then I did the swap, and naturally when WindowsXP booted up it started spitting out all the new hardware it found -- although it did not recognize most of it. I installed first the new 680i Nforce 9.53 platform drivers.... then I installed the audio drivers that I also got from eVGA?s site as I am now using the on-board audio.

I installed DirectX again just for fun and then my video drivers for my ATI video card. Then my wireless network card. It all work perfectly -- done. First time EVER I have not had to do a full format. I normally always do I just simply did not feel like doing it this time. Time will tell.

Has anyone got the eSATA to work? I purchased an SATA-to-eSATA bracket so that I can use eSATA with this board. Supposedly (and my previous experiences tell me) it's a plug-and-play thing, but I couldn't get it to work. The bracket is fine - I tested it on a LanParty board. It worked both with NF4 and SiI3114 with a simple reboot.

If anyone's able to use eSATA, please share the experience. Thanks and happy holidays!

Migration went flawlessly. Now off to some OC experimentation.

So would it be a good idea to install the SATA fix even if I have never had any problems? Is it likely I will develop problems like data corruption?

You mean, flashing BIOS? Well, normally when it comes to flashing BIOS, you should follow the old saying, "Don't fix it if it isn't broken". If you're happy with your current setup and experiencing no problem, just leave it at that. Then again, since 680i is so young, if you're confident about flashing BIOS (which really isn't anything difficult but can be scary for first timers), it might be worth it to give it a shot. I've just flashed mine and am about to test it out.

On a different account, the current (not sure about the P23 yet since I just flashed mine) BIOS has definitely something to be fixed, though. The board's performance shines with fast memory, but ironically I found out that the board has a problem sustaining fast/tight memory configuration. Also somewhere on the web I've heard the board has a problem with memory speed 800MHz and up, so I decided to try out DDR2-700. I've never really tried this before because I know that's not the configuration I wanted to run my system. (still don't) But I was like, WTH, there is nothing to lose for trying out. Let's see how it works out.. then I found out..

My CPU does 3.60GHz with only 1.44V! I accidently set the Vcore @1.49V in the BIOS which resulted 1.44~1.45V actual. Memory was running slower than FSB @700MHz/3-3-3-2T. All this while I thought my CPU (Xeon 3060) needed 1.50V for 3.60GHz. Since I booted the system with 1.49V anyway, I thought I'd just run Orthos for a bit expecting it'll lock up or reboot anyway.. NOT. The system ran for 4 hours with CPU load @100%, with actual Vcore hovering around 1.44~1.45V.

http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/7951/vcorejn7.png

The screenshot shows only 40 mins or so but it ran for more than 4 hours with only 1.45V. This was a big suprise to me because I thought this 680i chipset was radically different from the typical Intel chipsets where high memory/FSB values often require high Vcore as well. Apparently not so. Further testing with my RMA'ed board also confirmed a similar result. And there is definitely some strap thing going on around 1700FSB (425FSB quad-pumped). This chipset seems to be closer to P965 than to 975X in nature.

The board that I got from RMA behaves so much better. Much smaller gap of FSB holes and overall better stability. I took the Xeon out and installed E6400, and now it boots up to 1960FSB and I can Clockgen over 2000FSB without a hitch. I can't decide which CPU to keep now. :disgust:

I saw the P5N32-E in action today at Asus, we have a retail sample that will be reviewed shorly (after I get the P965 roundup finished next week. Consider this board to be the Striker without all of the extras. Also, MSRP is $249.

Let's try this again....

Thanks Gary,

Any word on this review? I've been reading some notes regarding the p5n32-e sli board's temperature, but users seem to have a positive take on the board overall. It would be great to see how it performs vs. it's 'striker brother' and other 680i boards.

QUESTION: Because of asynchronous timing, is it possible to use "value ram" to overclock E6300 with this chipset??

Is the board too expensive to try and save money that way?

Is there a current list out anywhere of 680i boards out and/or about to be released? I know there are several boards to be released Jan/Feb.

I was wondering the same thing myself. I'm interested in going to 4GB, but don't really feel like spending a grand on memory.

Here's hoping some fast 2GB modules show up at a lower price around the time Vista launches..

Well, I haven't visited this thread for a while but apparently there hasn't been much going on, either.

I hate to sound as if I'm scaring others, but do not attempt to set up any kind of RAID with this board. (EVGA) It will be a torture.

lopri & others,
I've heard a lot of storage driver problems but a few rumors that the ASUS 680i boards specifically don't suffer from this... is this true guys or is everyone in the same boat here?

I appreciate the help.

Do not install NV IDE drivers.

I will say that again.

DO NOT INSTALL NV IDE DRIVERS AND DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY KIND OF RAID ARRAY.

It is hard to diagnose whether the chipset is responsible or the board (or BIOS) is responsible. And honestly, I can't believe anyone regarding this matter, at this point. My guess is that it will remain as mystery until NV come out clean and confess, or there is someone with a gut strong enough to disclose the real truth. I am inclined to believe it's partially the chipset and partially the reference design board's power/signal regulation as well as ASUS' employ which must have been based on NV's reference design. (No one believes that ASUS built their boards from the ground up on their own, right?)

It's gotta be combination of many things. Because I somehow noticed the memory controller affecting disk controller, and vice versa. And we know the memory controller is in NB and the disk controller is in SB. Another thing, although very minor and maybe even un-noticeable, the disk controller doesn't like virtual drives, either. (Like Nero/Alcohol 120%'s virtual drives) And of course the more physical disks you hook up to the board, the bigger the chance you'll run a risk. A simple 2 SATA drives with 1 IDE optical drive is the way to go. Maybe up to 3 SATA disks and 2 optical (be it PATA or SATA). Anything more than that will stress the disk controller (especially if your memory configuration is tight) and could cause a problem.

On the other hand, the looser your memory configuration (low frequencies, loose timings), the more comfortable the disk controller will become and therefore can handle things better. So if your memory setup is looser than DDR2-800/4-4-4-2T, then you might not run into a problem at all. But if you're like me and the type who want to squeeze performance out of memory, then be prepared for many trial-and-errors. And let's be real. Who buys this board to run memory @700MHz/4-4-4? It doesn't matter whether the CPU-memory is Orthos stable. I had a configuration that was 8 hour Orthos stable, but it still ruined my RAID arrays. Multiple times. I eventually figured out the best combination for my components (see sig. 3 x Raptors and 1 x SATA DVD-ROM, NO RAID), but I'm still not sure if the time and energy wasted was really worthwhile. Well, to be honest I do think it was worthwhile personally (since it performs better than my previous 975X - like 1~2%, big f*cking deal, I know), but it's not something I would recommend for others.

Another thing to note: I'm hearing the short supply of ASUS 680i boards is due to the short supply of chipsets. Isn't that a bit strange? There seem to be abundant 680i reference boards on the market. What chipset shortage? It makes me wonder what exactly is in short supply, besides the rumoured cherry-picking.

Here is the performance gain from 975X to 680i. Most of the score increase is probably due to memory and disk performance. It's such an irony because those are the most problematic things on this(680i) platform.

9050 (975X)
9242 (680i)

And when RAID was working:

10027 (680i)

I agree. NEver install the SW IDE drivers. I have no idea why nVidia still keeps them. They have never worked. I have built dozens of systems and they have borked every one of them on every NV chipset out right back to the original nForce boards. I wish someone from NV could explain that one to me.

The answer is yes. You can have 2000FSB (500FSB quad-pumped) and still run memory @667MHz.
