Well, I did get the game last week... with the holidays etc etc... being away etc... I haven't spent much time with it. But I have to say, the graphics look pretty good. Yes, it suffers from the typical 3D game graphics issues which will get better when it evolves more - things like the faces have little detail on the avatars, there tends to be less detail in the backgrounds as compared to 2D painted backgrounds like BG2 etc... and some of the monster or enemy avatars have low polygon count and look somewhat crude if you are zoomed in. But these are typical of 3D graphics. NWN looks pretty nice in general and as I get into the story, hopefully it will hold up well. Overall NWN seems to have a polished interface and look.

So far it doesn't look like you can do thinks like change the portraits and voice sets after a character is created, like you could do in IWD and BG. Perhaps we will see some editors come out to make that user friendly, like the Gatekeeper, Shadowkeeper and Dalekeeper.

I'm multiplaying the main story with friends, so I'll be still in it when many are long finished. However, there are mods out there so I have something else to play or practice on.

I got it last night. Great game so far, but games like this always stress me out. Too many character choices!! AHHHHHHHH!!!! I spent 3 frigging hours trying to decide my character, abilities, starting skills, and starting feats last night. I kinda wish the single player was party based like Baldur's Gate was. The cool thing about BG was that you didn't have to worry about the class you were, because you could get any class you wanted as an NPC, and get to use them. This game is cool though. I'm dual wielding fighter right now.

Getting to know a new rules system is part of it. What has confused me is the feats and skills... some you pick and some you get for your class. I started on the 2E games like BG/BG2 and IWD, but also started playing 3E pnp games soon after. It has always been a bit hard trying to learn two different systems. And change aint always easy if you learned one first.

One thing that helped me pick my class and alignment was I have taken some of those online D&D tests. You answer a bunch of questios and they match up your closest class or alignment (different test for either). I tested best for Ranger NG. I've been playing a Cleric of Palor in the pnp game and enjoying it, but for role playing purposes, I'd do better with the Ranger.

BTW, if anyone comes up with any character editors, please post the links here. For example, BG had the gatekeeper, BG2 had the Shadowkeepr and Icewind Dale had the Dalekeeper. I see that in NWN, you can't even edit the portrait, the colors, the voices etc... things that don't really affect the game play. These things could be modified in BG/BG2 and IWD.

Anyway, it is a pretty good game, maybe not as ground breaking as BG or BG2 was... you can't control whole parties etc... so they have sacrificed a few things maybe for the programming for the toolset etc... Maybe Bioware will come out with a sequel that will push the graphics and the game play to new heights in another year or two - hopefully.

Has anyone had this problem? I exported my character and played it in multiplay. Later, not wanting to lose the xp earned, I started up my single player gamesave in multplayer mode, and imported my latest export. As soon as the screen loaded, my henchmen, who was saved in the last gamesave attacked me. This happened every time I tried to reload a gamesave with the imported character. Anyone know whats up with that? or have it happen? That makes no sense if you want to keep using the same character. This was happening during the intro BTW.

I had this happen to me as well. I read on the NWN forums that a work around is to start the game (single/multi) that you want to re-export your character from. Go out and let your henchman get killed. Save your character while your henchman is dead and you should be able to import your character (sans henchman) it into your game.

Thanks.... I've also heard that you can successfully import a character at the beginning of each chapter.

However, what I mentioned above, about importing and being attacked by the henchman, has been acknowledged by Bioware as a bug now. I read a quote from the developers which includes it in the list of things known and being worked on.

So, hopefully the next patch out will fix this.

Hey all!

I am also waiting for the price to go down. I?m a big-time D&D fan and I?m even building a new rig partly because of this damn game and also my friends daughter has a better system then me! How embarrassing! Well I?ve been doing some research on this game and found a
site that will match up DMs and players so you can use the multi-player part of the game. It?s much better if you are a D&D fan and you like a great adventure. If you just want hack and slash action go to Gamespy

Enjoy!

I'll be there some day! :|

This has to be game of the year.
I got this game the same day I got warcraft 3.
I have not played warcraft more then 15 mins because of NWN.
It is worth the $55.oo price tag.
I don't even like RPG's but I love this game.

Doordie,

Here is the thing about Gamespy and NWN. NWN uses it for multiplay hosting and hookups, nomatter what you do. With Bauldurs Gate, Bauldurs Gate 2 and Icewind Dale, you could connect to other computers (acting as servers) by choosing JOIN and entering the IP.

However, if you choose multiplayer and JOIN in NWN, it automatically goes to the Gamespy site. You can still direct connect, but the connection is still rounted through Gamespy. I'm not sure if I like it or not. But if the server PC doesn't password protect the game, you'll get any bozo joining, and believe me, some people are bozo's. Sometimes they'll just get board and attack your party.

Anyway, with direct connect, you still enter the IP address of the server, and then join the game. It works pretty well. Cheerio.

Thanks techwanabe, but I know how it works. Did you go to the site I suggested for real D&D gamers? You can sign up with people who really want to play D&D. I was trying to help other D&D players get together with REAL players so there not just joining any silly server.

np Doordie,

I know what you mean... I haven't played with Gamespy much in the way you are talking about. NWN is hardcoded to connect to gamespay when you go to multiplayer mode - assuming you are connected to the internet.

I certainly understand your desire to play with real D&D players since many of the people who bought NWN are not... The game is user friendly enough that hacknslash Diablo types can go in and not really role play or play according to the spirit and rules of the game.

Me, I've got four people local to me in central NY who are playing the game co-operatively a few nights a week. Three of us have been playing a 3E D&D (Grayhawk based) pnp game for almost 2 years now everyother Friday night. One of them is a DM (he has been DMing for 10 years and playing much longer than that. Fun bunch. Good luck. NWN rocks!

I imagine we'll see a patch within a week... not 100% sure thought.

BTW, has anyone had problems with gamesave corruption? Two of us in a local group have had it lately.

oops! Too late. Well, I hope the patch hasn't caused any problems. I was at the Bioware NWN forums last night and saw alot of messages regarding the new patch causing problems. Alot of people said the game didn't work after installing patch 1.21. Hmmm... some thought it made things worse.

I downloaded patch 1.21 and burned it to a CD - the thing weighs in well over 30 mb! Funny that the manual patch would be so big, but if you run the games update feature, they say there is only 3 mb to download. Strange. Anyway, I'm going to hold off since my game is running pretty well on patch 1.19.
