One question I would like answered by those opposed to the gov't healthcare option.
If our system is "#1" (as you claim) in your eyes, why is it not the model used round the world?

What does "the gov't healthcare option" you mention above refer to?

Edit: Different countries use different "models". While most have "universal health care", only some have nationalized medicine while others haven't, some have "single payer" some don't, some single-payer is public some are not, some fund HC entirely out of tax revenues and others don't.

You might as well pick other country's HC system and ask the same question: Why is their model not used round the world?

Obama says he wants this to be dialog between both sides, and not talking points going back & forth.

Gooooooood Luck Mr. President.

Obama and Alexander both made excellent opening statements. Pelosi just defended the existing bills (that only 25% of the country support) and Reid did much the same, except claiming that amendments offered by the Republicans make it bipartisan (and stroking Pelosi- shudder!) And Obama is now talking about finding common ground and also taking on cutting costs.

Taking both Obama and Alexander at their word, it appears there are two questions. First, can Obama and the Republicans truly find common ground? Second, if they can, does Obama have the will and the political power to drag Pelosi, Reid, and the other far left with him?

I had a swedish couple in the other day with their child who had a simple ear infection. They had to pay for the visit. Their american friend commented that it must be strange for them to have to pay. So I asked about it. They stated that about 60% of their salary go to taxes. I did'nt bother them further to discuss access but they did say that most sweds don't go to the doctor right away and only if it seems severe.
There is a cultural difference between us and Europe. They stated that their doctors wont treat most common illnesses right away and prefer to allow the bodies immune system the first crack at curing the disease.
In this country, I have to contend with people that come in within 24 hours of onset of symptoms. Many saying that they "just cant afford to be sick", as though the world would stop if they couldnt work.

They don't want to find common ground with Obama. That's a quick route to unemployment for them.

This whole "stonewall" game is about representing their voters and getting re-elected. Policy be damned.

Quite true. Most people in the USA have insurance, so it costs them little or nothing to see a doctor. The irony is that many common illnesses (colds, for example) have no effective medical treatment anyway.

Looks like the whole "Health Care Summit" was a sham after all:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0210/33510.html

After a brief period of consultation following the White House health-reform summit, congressional Democrats plan to begin making the case next week for a massive, Democrats-only health care plan, party strategists told POLITICO.

A Democratic official said the six-hour summit was expected to “give a face to gridlock, in the form of House and Senate Republicans.”

My suck-ass Charter Communications ISP cannot even handle the CNN stream (128kps?).

Best I can tell Obama and Alexander went back and forth on the 'facts' of the CBO review.

Coburn was talking about how individuals and families need to take charge of their own health --- I think he was also whining about tort reform but I can't really tell.

I have no issue with moderate tort reform as long as it is coupled with hospital/doctor transparency. The 'system' kills way too many people to let the bad actors get away with it.

Unfortunately, most people don't want to hear that it is probably viral, if there is even a snowballs chance in hell that it may need an antibiotic they want it. I try to encourage my patients to attempt to give it a week if they can fight it. I also find that a large percentage of my patients would get sick less often if their PMD would at least attempt to control their seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Heh heh, I just came back to post that very story!

So much for the narrative that it's the Republicans who aren't there in good faith.

All the Democrats need to do is "explain it better" for us dumb citizens to understand and embrace how great and loving and caring the federal guberment is!

Barry can we expect the same results from "health care reform" as we received from the stimulus bill?

I'm surprised Barry had the time for this debate, I mean he has been working hard destroying jobs I wonder if he has someone filling in for him during these 6 hours.

This kind of attitude is so mind numbingly stupid. Both health care reform bills are already bipartisan. There are many many Republican ideas in them. Neither has the preferred liberal solution, single payer, and the Senate bill doesn't even have public option or Medicare buy in!!! Republicans took advantage of the debate starting at the center, and demonized the centrist bill as a left wing Bolshevik plot to gain political points.

In any case, the bills already passed. There is nothing wrong with using reconciliation.

The thing is, that's true. Most people support the individual parts of healthcare reform. Most people even approve of public option.

Too bad a big angry chunk of the population is gullible enough to be riled up by self-serving Republican politicians.
