I know its early, as the game isn't even technicaly released yet, but some people have already gotten a copy. So my question is what is your opinion of the game so far? What you expected, less, more. Just curioius, and we'll obviously get more opinions as tommarow goes on.

------------------------------------------------
This thread will not be stickied; however, please use it for all related non-technical issues/questions/comments/bragging, etc.

There is an Oblivion Technical Issues Thread

Any other threads will be locked.

Thank you

Garkon, do you know if there are any demos for the game? It looks great from all the
screenshots, but I would like to try it out.

It just hit yesterday/today, so no. IIRC, there was no demo for Morrowind. However there was one beforehand for Daggerfall.

I'll receive my copy in the mail over the next couple days, but I'm going to wait for the new nVidia driver that's made for Oblivion before I play it.

It looks like they may have toned the graphics down a tad from what I heard from some, but it may be that they are using the wrong settings or somesuch. It's really too early to be sure.

I wish they would release special drivers for this game like what AMD did for Quake 2 back in '98 or '99, can't remember which one atm.

Special drivers are going to be released for it, at least for Nvidia.

I didn't find any local outlet of any sort expecting to have it on their shelves before 2:00 PM CDT. I also haven't had the "required" OS loaded on a PC, either. It's supposed to run on XP, which I haven't needed (or wanted), so it's not installed on anything here, although I do have two copies of XP Pro, and one of XP Home, if/when really needed. So far, I tested only and never kept either version installed long enough to Activate.

BUT now, if I can't run Oblivion in W2K, I might have to install again. And the SP2 CD had gone MIA since I saw it last (something else that's more immediately local is my neighborhood hasn't gotten any fiber upgrade other than from a single cable supplier, so with no broadband competition, the cost is still far too high here. SP2 at 56 K would take 10-12 hours with the best connection!)

MS finally sent me a new copy; it came today. But I'd like to hear from anyone else who wants to try running Oblivion with W2K first, and see how it goes for them (and I'll gladly swap info, when the store here expecting it soon does get a copy to sell).

Got it at noon today on my way home for lunch. Installed it and created a character. (magic user)

The cell I am in looked pretty sweet but then I had to come back to work.

It was like giving a starving man a bread crumb!

Windows 2000 is officially supported. It was added about a week ago to the FAQ.

Just picked up a copy at the Evil Empire (WalMart) on lunch. I've got a pretty high-end rig so I'm really looking forward to seeing Oblivion on it. I'll turn up the eye candy and report back.

So far so good, it ran pretty well for a bit on my system but started to get sluggish when the 2nd night came around. Just dropped some AA settings and a couple other options in the game about to go back in and see how it runs. AMD64 2.0 GHz-X800XL-1GB RAM 1280x1024 LCD.

On the PC verisoin: Though I wish I didn't have to use 'Tab' to look in inventory, maps, quest, skills, etc. Wish there were some hot keys for them.

Aside from that, no real complaints about the game.

heh, i ordered it from amazon but was by a gamestop today. i ended up going in an buying it and once i got back i cancelled my amazon order. good thing they hadn't shipped it yet. i was going to return it either way anyway.

i was reading the manual during lunch and i'm still really disappointed about one thing - stolen items. if you get caught by the guards for something, you lose every single item you stole even if you were never caught. how the fvck do the guards know that dagger you stole in a town 500 miles away was actually stolen?

at least in this game you get a chance to get it back, even if it is extremely hard to do.

Damn pontifex, I was hoping they fixed that as well. Especially since the guards aren't suppose to be retarded anymore. There should just be an amount of time before the item becomes "yours" and have it based on the value and uniqueness of the item and maybe some random component.

That is a little lame that they kept the stolen item procedure, but I am not to bummed. I am getting Oblivion at 6:00pm today, and I can't wait to play it.

Anyone running this on a dual core machine...that can give us an estimate of the performance benefit dual core offers?

That bothers me too... Actually, I never knew it worked that way in the first place. I just planned on never getting caught... Damnit, I want this game so badly but the wife won't let me... I am going to have to sneak to the store tonight, I think... That is the only way. Or perhaps I should wait for the official reviews, whether it supports sidescreen or not and what the replay value is... Oh man... I can barely wait.

I'm probably going to go out and buy it this weekend...usually I like to stay away from the games for 3-6 months or so and let every else beta tests the first patches. But I really want to play this and initial reports seem to indicate that it performs/scales a bit better then expected and that it isn't as horribly buggy as expected.

Now I'm sure it will run ok on my 2.4ghz venice, 1gb of ram and x850xt at 1024x768...but the question is what will my wife's machine (sempron 64 @ 2340, 1gb, 6800nu) handle it? Because she's gonna be trying to push me off my computer once she sees this and that ain't happening!

Hopefully, some one will come up with a mod that fixes the stealing aspect. Or maybe I'll bust the CS open and try my hand at it.

Let me know if you fix it...

Interestingly, I havn't seen any reviews of it yet... Just a bunch of preview BS... I expected to see online reviews go up all over today... But, I guess not. Dissapointing, really.

I used google to find magazine scans of PC Gamer US and UK reviews. UK gave it a 93% and US gave it 96%. They were both good reads that answered many of my questions.

I've got the Opteron 170 dual core CPU. I'll report back how the game plays. If there's a way to 'timedemo' it let me know and I'll do that.

not sure how to time demo it, and the game randomly adds vegitation so no 2 benchmarks will be exactly the same.

just a simple guesstimation....maybe use a fps recorder to see the high and low of moving around in an area...and then do the same thing as best u can under single core...

im just looking for a relative idea... 5-10%? 30-40%? 50-80%?

I'd definitely like to know the difference it makes on a dual core system too. I just got an x2 4200+ for a new system.

I like the combat a lot better in this version. There isn't a huge difference, but it's enough to make it more dependent on skill thank clicking as fast as you can.... Also, i like the guards in this game better. It's cool because there are a lot of guards riding horse back up and down the roads out of town in case you need help early on.

I'm not a big fan of riding the horses though. They're a lot faster obviously, but you cannot attack while riding (or at least i haven't figured out how) and it's hard to control where you're going. But being there doesn't seem to be any other forms of transportation (teleporting and riding the siltstrider) I guess we'll just have to make do riding the horses.

Overall, i really like the game, and i can't wait till nVidia's new patch comes out so i can get a few extra frames per second!

I like the horses, makes those running tasks a lot easier, though I'm not sure what you mean there's no teleportation, it's even free, all you have to do is click a place thats on your map, as long as it's been added by someone and/or you've been there.
