*official* Oblivion Thread, opinions?

I have a AthlonXP 2500, 1 gig of ram, but no video card at the moment. I really want to play this game, but I don't know what card to get.
I was thinking a 6600 GT. It got pretty decent benchmarks. Any advice?

I don't mind turning the draw distance down some. Hopefully they'll come out with a FPS optimizer like the one for morrowind, that dynamically added/removed shadows and increased/decreased draw distance to keep your FPS solid.

you can't have AA and HDR on at the same time.

I know. They were two seperate questions. Plus the x850xt can't do HDR anyway.

The 7600GS just came out and outperforms the 6600GT at a lower price. Take a look at them.

Not yet they havent stated it would be available for AGP (not that i've seen anyway)....and alot of people doubt they will for the time being. They want you to upgrade to pci-ex. More pci-e mobos that sell, the more pci-ex gfx cards they sell is my opinion on the matter. And if they do they will probably neuter it so bad it wouldnt even compare to its pci-express counterpart (similar to the situation when they finally released the 7800 for AGP)

Boo ya. Amazon just shipped my Oblivion CE so I hope it gets here by Friday (unless it gets lost/stolen/spit on in the mail). To those already with it, thank you for the welcome to two days ago. Now to upgrade my VC, anyone have any opinions? It's either x800 GTO ($184 CDN) or Geforce 7600GT ($255). Can save about $80-$90 (with tax) to get by pretty well, but only get 2/3 of the performance?

Assuming you have pci-e I'd get the 7600gt.

Man, ATI's driver team must be a bunch of morons :|. The "We suck and crashed, resetting your card..." thing came up 3x in a bit over an hour of playing, and the fourth time the screen went black and stayed black until I alt-tabbed out and used task manager to close Oblivion. What's great is the "send feedback" button from the ATI crash recovery app tries to launch Outlook, fails for some reason (it doesn't work if it's not the default e-mail app???), and doesn't even generate text for me to paste in an email if you have another client :roll:

Athlon XP 2100+
Some sort of Radeon 9600 Pro
1GB RAM

I left it on the default settings for "Low", but I turned water quality to high, and enabled ripples & water reflections. It was entirely playable. 720x480

i doubt it will do any good but i am emailing them about the damn stealing part of the game. stealing is pretty much worthless because you can only steal what you need. if you steal anything else its just garbage in your inventory because no vendors will buy it. apparently certain thieves guild members will buy it but i have yet to see one.

i guess it helps so you don't makea lot of money right away, but isn't that what a thief and stealing items is all about? risk vs. reward.

in a game where they made the world as pretty realistic (for a fantasy game) as they could, i still can't believe this thing goes through.

I just went to walmart after reading some information about it. Im new to the whole oblivion thing but I heard a lot of good things. I didnt look for a deal because I got the sudden urge to buy it and the only place open is wal-mart.
Im hoping i can run at native with my 215tw with all the eye candy or else it looks like some thing will have to be sold to get a better videocard and mine as well get a dual core while at it.
I used to be a RPGer but havent played any in a long time. been mostly FPSes but I will give my take on the game. as soon as i play some. If you dont hear a review for 4 hours from me. Well then know its good i got the week off with nothing to do.

I have a 6800GT (clocked a bit past ultra), an athlon 64 3500 (clocked up to 2.5Ghz) and a gig of RAM. Indoors it runs just acceptably on high quality 1024x768, outside it drops under 20fps a lot. I'm not an FPS Nazi but I've gotta figure something out with the settings to make it work. HDR may get the boot.

It didn't detect my 7600 GT either

anyway outdoors, HDR totally kills my frame rate. with it off everything runs smoothly again (1280x1024)

I don't think it's ATI... You are trying to play a brand new game on a card that was a budget card 4 years ago. If you are having problems. it's because of that.
