Ok. I searched for the word 'sewer' in this thread and nothing came up, so, I need some help. I go into the sewers, I think in the Elven district (or market) and there's a gate, I try to open it and it says I need a key, there is an upper entrance just like the lower one with the same 'key' issue. There is a small table, with a couple lit candles and a stool. Noone is in the sewer chamber, but someone definitely was.
Also, there's another door, this one actually looks like a steel banded wood door, right after you enter the sewers, kill a bandit, there are 2 cots, and when you try to open the door, it says that it's opened remotely, when you hit it, you hear voices asking 'hey! who's there?' and such.
1) where can I find the key for the first one (they look like short fences rather than gates
2) where can I open the door remotely?

Thanks, and yes, I realize that i am slow to advance in the game, just havent had the time to sit for hours.

IIRC, the key you need is part of the main quest. So it may just be that you haven't got there yet?

As for the opening remotely, it could be within the room you need the key for. Not sure as I did thaty a LONG time ago.

Ok, thanks. Another stupid question, if I missed the point where I am supposed to get that key, can I go back? The only 'main' quest I've got to do is give the amulet to jauffe (sp?)
I'm tailing someone right now to see if they are selling fenced goods (got busted in his house too )

Theres a lot more to the main quest. Jauffre will have you running around If you haven't already, then give him the amulet. Near the end of the quest, you deal with the heir, not so much Jauffre.

Why would you close that many gates? Don't you get sick of going through the same oblivion towers fighting the same enemies? They all get closed when you complete the main quest anyway, so other than getting lots of deadric stuff that you can only sell for 1200 anyway, i don't see the point in closing all the gates yourself.

what do you mean, "only sell for 1200 anyway"?
:Q

as your Mercantile Skills increase you get to INVEST in any shop you like . . . that *same* item may be worth hundreds or thouands Gold more the further you get.

secondly, i "only" closed 38 - so far. . . .

i'd like to do it *all*

and you are forgetting Sigil Stones
[i can boost my 'Chameleon' to over 150 and my "reflect Damage" is well over 50%]

300 hours into the game - about 10 wasted RE-doing most of the [boring] Thieves Guild Quests because of a Shrine Quest Bug [the last one] that is NOT addressed by the patch.
. . . the ONLY Guild left for me is the Fighters' . . . i reached the top in all the others.

and when you have well over 500,000 Gold, you don't even *bother* with the Persuasion game . . . it's "bribe . . . bribe . . . bribe . . . " . . . just to save time.

I haven't even got to Jauffre, haven't left the Imperial City (ok, briefly to explore some caves and see the stable that DIDN'T sell horses). I think I took a wrong turn in the begining and I've been going that way since. Ugh, I really don't want to restart.

You don't have to restart. Just pull up the quest as your active and get going on it again. I went on and off that quest forever, until I got sick of Oblivion Gates and finished it just to close them all. You haven't even really started the quest yet.

Ok, thanks. Everytime I get some progress in following the fence for the "Good as New" chick, it asks me if I want to make it my active quest. I don't. Thanks again. One more question, can I buy a horse in Imperial city?

I forget. I don't think so. Of course, you'll get a horse in the main quest if you start back on it

how are you guys amassing all that gold?

i'm at level 6 and i have about 100 left! i don't train much, and rarely have enough to recharge magic weapons from time to time.

It's because you're level 6 the loot scales along with the enemies as you level. It's kinda hardscrabble at first, but once you hit your teens you'll be hauling piles of orcish armor out of those marauder forts... twenties and beyond, you'll be dumping piles of ebony, daedric and glass at the shops. My character has 750K, there isn't even any point in hauling it all to town any more, except to build Mercantile skill for the heck of it.

I just finished all of the Fighter's Guild quests and just joined the Mages Guild.
I also finished the arean quest, the first part where you become grand champion.

I've been playing for 40hrs as of last night and I've done none of the main quest.

Game is still tons of fun and there are so many places to explore.

Is buying a house important?

I feel like I should have a place to dump stuff so I don't get all encumbered all the time. But the only houde I found so far is the waterfront dump at the imperial city. Is this safe? Its in an area of theives, will my stuff get stolen?

Is there any reason to find a different house? I don't want to wast money and don't really care, I'm just not sure if there are any consequences (like role playing opertunities) to getting a house. For free sleeping I just use Lorkmir's house, he's dead and no one seems to notice, so I just use his place. I wonder if I could dump stuff there and skip the house buying all together....

Oh speaking of Lorkmir, is there any way to tell someone that he's dead? I tried doing the right thing, but its never an option for speaking to anyone.

Is it possible to join more than one guild, or even all three? I'm building a jack of all trades kinda character and want to be rather chaotic neutral in D&D terms. So I'm interested in being a hero AND being an assassin.

just wondering if I have to choose one, if so it will probably be mage. I'm happy just building the theif and warrior skills on my own.

yes you can be in multiple guilds. So far I finished the thief guild and the fighter. Although after being a master @ the thief...people's disposition towards me especially all gaurds are very low

Truthfully, there isnt any point in buying all the houses other than to make it look nice and have an extra place to sleep, but I did it anyway because as you progress further along in the game, money doesn't become an issue if you're looting, stealing, cave dwelling a lot in addition to the quests. Quick cash can be made at the Arena after you become Grand Champ, but thats like a once a week basis. Even with all the houses, I still put all my crap at the Waterfront dump just to keep track of everything and I have my oh so adoring fan "guarding" the front and serving as a lamp post.

Oh, and I wouldn't dump stuff at Lorkmir's house because there is agood chance that it will disappear after a few days...dunno who takes it, but I've lost stuff in other abandoned houses before

And yes, you can join all the guilds you want, no confilcting storylines as far as I can tell

Yes.

you NEED a place to dump stuff [as you progress you will find a few "safe" chests and houses you can leave your stuff - even your special horse Shadowmere can be *knocked out* and used as travelling storage] as MOST places REset the loot in the chests pretty often.

the House in Imp City is just as safe as any other [completely safe . . . nothing gets stolen from your house].

and don't worry about Gold . . . . i have about 750,000 in "working" cash . . . and probably another 500,000 in unredeemed loot . . .

actually i have all 8 houses . . . don't forget to furnish them all [that's how you get storage] . . .it's just part of doing *everything*

and i am almost done with Oblivion . . . over three hundred [300] hours . . . 38 Oblivion Gates closed, 330+ "Places visited", head of all the Guilds, joined all the factions . . . completed all but about 5 or 6 Side Quests

. . . and have a completely invincible character with really high skill stats for only Level 24 . . .

and i am still looking for ~20 more Oblivion Gates
[which are getting really hard to find]

:Q

not bad for my FIRST fantasy RPG

I am shelving it for now. I finished playing it twice - as a fighter and as a mage/archer completing the main quest, all guild quests & a whole lotta side quests.

I've played this game incessantly since it came out (it's the only one I reinstalled on my comp after I reformatted over Easter weekend)... it's been that much fun, but my char is definitely approaching "endgame" now - lvl 42, main quest done, 2 quests left in each guild, most misc. quests done, obscene anounts of loot... I'm bummed that the end is near, I'm not sure that there's another character type that'll be as much fun for me in a re-play. Maybe an aggressive caster char, but I love the sneaking and sniping so much...

Hell, now that I know of some things I'd do differently if I started that type of char all over again, I might do that... or maybe try that char type in Morrowind, I never finished that one and haven't touched it in 2 years.

Thanks all for the responses. I made my own class and have decided at lvl 11 to stop there. I'm just going to max out skills and not lvl anymore. Not so much for the game scaling as I'm curiouse to see how it will work out.

I guess I'll try and buy a house. First I have to figure out where to buy lockpicks. I had like 150 of them and never thought I'd need more, but while my security was low I wasted through a bunch of hard locks. Uses a lot of picks...

I find closing oblivion gates boring. But worse than that is trying to find people. I keep forgetting who the hell I'm looking for, and when I do, I can't seem to find them. Like the head of the mages guild in cheryndhal or whatever its called. Can't figure out how to buy the house, and can't figure out where the mage guild leader is...

One other thing. how do you furnish a house? How do you get chests and stuff. Its not possible to actually carry them is it?

That sucks that doing the theif quests lowers your disposition. I mean shouldn't your identity be secret? If you don't get caught. Oh and does infamy automatically lower your fame or can you have a high fame AND high infamy at the same time?

Sorry for all the stupid questions. I just spent an hour in that stupid painting quest. Finally managed to complete it with only having to face 2 trolls, so I have a bunch of turpintine leftover, not that its worth anything.

cheers!

I think my next character is going to be a monk. The idea of running around without armor or weopons and just b^tch slapping everything is just too funny.

Pay more attention when you talk to people around town. Also, most quests that require you to find people will give you an indicator on your compass.

One other thing. how do you furnish a house? How do you get chests and stuff. Its not possible to actually carry them is it?
After you buy your house, you'll get a quest to furnish it. Go to whatever store the quest says, and buy the funishings. They are automatically delivered and set up for you and you get a piece of paper, sort of like a receipt.

That sucks that doing the theif quests lowers your disposition. I mean shouldn't your identity be secret? If you don't get caught. Oh and does infamy automatically lower your fame or can you have a high fame AND high infamy at the same time?
I'm pretty sure that infamy DOES NOT affect fame. If you want to raise your fame, complete more non-thieves guild quests. Talk to towns people, fight in the arena, etc.

i have 330 hours into the game and i have done *everything*
[i know, i joined the Oblivion Kiddie Forums to make sure] except for 2 [very minor] *broken* side-quests and the Turn into a Vampire and get the Cure Quest . . . i have shut 38 Oblivion gates and am holding off on the last 5 minutes of the MQ to see if i can find the rest [i am only Level 28 . . . but know how to level FAST - takes less than an hour now (do a 1 sec self-spell and tape the "C" key down . . . or "sneak" or "run" in a corner by yourself instead of pausing the game . . . you are levelled UP in NO time)]

Oblivion is my game of the Millenium

my FIRST fantasy RPG.

i have NO desire to play Morrowind . . . i think Bloodlines is my next RPG.
