I guess I'll try and buy a house. First I have to figure out where to buy lockpicks. I had like 150 of them and never thought I'd need more, but while my security was low I wasted through a bunch of hard locks. Uses a lot of picks...

I find closing oblivion gates boring. But worse than that is trying to find people. I keep forgetting who the hell I'm looking for, and when I do, I can't seem to find them. Like the head of the mages guild in cheryndhal or whatever its called. Can't figure out how to buy the house, and can't figure out where the mage guild leader is...

One other thing. how do you furnish a house? How do you get chests and stuff. Its not possible to actually carry them is it?

That sucks that doing the theif quests lowers your disposition. I mean shouldn't your identity be secret? If you don't get caught. Oh and does infamy automatically lower your fame or can you have a high fame AND high infamy at the same time?

Sorry for all the stupid questions. I just spent an hour in that stupid painting quest. Finally managed to complete it with only having to face 2 trolls, so I have a bunch of turpintine leftover, not that its worth anything.

cheers!

I think my next character is going to be a monk. The idea of running around without armor or weopons and just b^tch slapping everything is just too funny.

I think you're eventually gonna want to level up because things start getting too easy, but you'll find that out on your own anyways.

As far as the lockpicks go, goblins have lots of em, check out the sewers or caves by Imperial City. But there is a trick to the locks that I've and a lot of others have mastered and it just has to do with the speed the pins are going up when you tick them. Just keep doing it and you'll figure it out. Theres also a spoiler concerning the need for lockpicks, so Im not gonna mention it.

As far as looking for people, make sure the quest you're doing is active in your notes (TAB), the red indicator is where you need to go, when it turns green, you're in the same area as the person you're looking for.

Furnishing a house can be done by buying usually from "Trading Goods" stores in each city I believe. But your quest notes should indicate. You dont carry the stuff back to your house, you just purchase it and its done automatically for you. Go back to the house and you'll see it.

As for the Theif quests and infamy disposition stuff, I could care less about it since I have so much money to pay my fencers to get rid of it.

Thanks again!

I don't want cheats. I know the "tricks" of lockpicking, I just suck. I usually get one or two easily then the next two or three is where I keep breaking picks. Security was also not one of my major skills so its been slow gaining. Since I'm not leveling I can't train. Since my character is a kind of jack of all trades the game should stay challenging. I'm pretty ballanced, so I can handle most things, but never can just plow through.

One drawback of joining guilds is I was having fun stealing everything, now its "mine". Oh well, its still fun to pickpocket fighters guild peeps.

I wish this had a network capable mode like diablo or something, but I don't see any way that could work.

cheers!

Well you have me beat on hours I'm around 250-ish.

Leveling hasn't been much of a problem... but it's gonna get slow now. Light Armor and Sneak are maxed, Blade and Marksman are about to pop, they're both 99. That leaves Armorer, Security and Block. Armorer is 89, that'll come along. Security is 77, coming along but more slowly... Block is the "runt" skill, it's only 69, and that's after buying 5 training sessions for it this level, and I'll be buying 5 sessions in it @ each level from here on out 'til my char caps off at 49. That'll save me from having to mosh with the mudcrabs to bring it up... I didn't do a lot of blocking early on and I do even less of it now, Marksman really does shine if you dedicate yourself to building it up, work the sneak attacks... and of course, craft yourself a really killer Daedric bow.

If I did this char all over again? Illusion instead of Block (this char has illusion @ 70 w/o any grinding, and that's with it as a Minor) and acrobatics(?) instead of Security - I have Skeleton Key, but I can't use it - the game applies its 40 point Security bonus as "hard" points and in my case, that means it's maxed and won't increase. So it sits on a shelf in my house, doing absolutely nothing for me. Better to leave Security as a minor, go get SK, and be done with it. In practically all cases. Ain't hindsight great?

Leveling is easy . . . just make sure you use a little strategy in choosing your trainer to raise your Major Skill(s) 5 points and you're halfway there.

hint: make sure you finish the Daedric Quests . . . you stats climb over 100 - even without enchantment.

many of my stats are also over 100 without enchantment . . . including Agility and Speed . . . Strength in the 90s
[smart too, 85 intelligence]

and Major skills have my Athletics, Blade and Conjuration all over or at 100
[Athletics 85]

Minor skills about 100 include Security and Sneak with Light Armour in the mid-80s
[an agile but superstrong char]

Everyone should definitely become a Vampire and do the Cure Quest. . . . there is a primal feeling fighting as a Stage 3 Vampire . . . i got attacked even while encumbered and destroyed my attacker with a single vicious blow . . .
. . . however, i got tired of having to *time* everything with daylight and Sun Damage so i quickly went back to 'normal'
. . . and i stopped using Chameleon . . . i just don't need it anymore.

After just Over 331 hours, i have:
[basically these are my FINAL stats . . . i have 5 minutes left in the MQ and plan to ride around ONCE more before i finish to see if i can find any more gates]

178 Quests completed

[6 active - 2 minor ones are borked and need a patch; 3 of the 6 are Open like the DB where you can come back every week if you want your pittance in Gold tribute and the MQ has 5 minutes left]

Creatures Killed: 3846
People Killed: 1645
Places found: 336
38 Gates Shut
35 Skill Books [without any guide]
15 Atifacts [ditto]
6 days as a Vampire

So . . . i am Done
:brokenheart:

Well at least i might get a full night sleep and even some work done at my home this weekend
:Q

two thumbs up - WAY UP - for Oblivion . . .

it's is my "Game of this Millenium"

So . . . i am Done

Yep *EVERYTHING*

335 hours and i checked:

IMPORTANT:

The game is BUGGED. IF you do it [wrong] like i did - the gates stop because the MQ "automatically finishes" [after a LONG time] if you LEAVE it [late] like i did . . . you can NOT return to it.

good to know

no biggie. i already saw the ending and have done *EVERYTHING* that is possible - i know because i cheated and did the "completeallqueststages" just to see . . . the *only* thing i missed were 2 borked minor SQs [one had a missing body; the 'offering' was there] and a few master trainers i didn't care to find [hand-to-hand, anyone?]

i guess i could get into the console and edit files and attempt to 'fix' it all . . . however, after 335 hours with this Wonderful Game . . . it is *DONE*
!

and i am really looking forward to a Real patch [that may fix it] and Especially the Expansion Pack.

Awesome Game and My GotM

PSA

WHATEVER you do - DO NOT - i repeat Do Not install the Beta Patch!!!!!!!

it destroyed my game . . . here is a brief summary of a few issues:
BIG problem with the MQ since Beta patch installed.

if you wanna see the whole problem - go to the official Oblivion forums and search my username's topics:
only official mods - orrey and wizards tower

2.80c P4 @3.2Ghz [proven 'rock stable' - even with Oblivion]
ati x850xt [stock]
Abit IC7/1GB PC 3500
Creative Audigy2ls
Win2k . . . all drivers, etc. up-to-date and HD defragmented.
the MQ is borked.

i left it nearly 300 hours ago to do sidequests and now that is is active again Martin is nowhere to be found and everything is peaceful instead of the Big Final Battle.

So i started to do the console edits and got the hang of it - found the battle . . . except Martin is *lost* [on the road from Bruma, now i think . . . even though he was in the City in the Save.

How do i find him and place him back into the game? . . . the ending isn't the same without him . . . and i can't progress -even though the Journal says it is 'finished'.

Here's what i tried:

i made the MQ active and went to the Temple to meet Chancellor Ocato.

Martin is NOwhere to be found ["Player.Placemeat 00033907" did nothing] [going to where he might have been outside Bruma - as suggested by a later journal entry - found nothing.

So i tried to advance the Quest thru the console by moving up the Form IDs. They advanced only the area i was in . . . for example, Martin became the Avatar and destroyed Mehunes D inside the temple - according to the Journal - but the War still raged on outside. After a time, - i tried waiting 24 hours and Mehunes actually came into the Temple and i saw the Ending . . . AND, the war still raged on with Mehunes still very much alive outside the temple.

Player.placeatme 00033907 just made "duplicates" of Martin that would not go away . . . and i cannot leave the temple [even after 'waiting' over 2 weeks] to get the Dragon Armour at the prison.

great game - terrible patch
[it even modifies some of your saves]

WAIT for the official patch

at least i learned more about game [re]construction in the last 24 hours than i did in the last 2 years
[kind neat]

How exactly do you effect fame/infamy. I assuem by doing good or bad things, but what else. I have I think 6 fame and 12 infamy, so i can't join guilds(already in the thieves guild) and most importantly I can't cure diesease at a church or wherever.

as long as you don't get the Beta patch . . .

1. i didn't bother with Horse Armour . . it is just for "damage' and 'looks'
[your choice . . . do you like how it looks are are you tired of paying for black horse-after-horse (fast but weak)]

[i have Shadowmere, anyway - he respawns and i like to knock him out when he is near dying and stuff him with extra stuff i can't carry . . . he retains all the gear and so far is loaded up with more stuff than i can even imagine]

2. the Orrey is a 10 minute quest that gives you a[n ugly] machine that doesn't do much - at least i haven't found a Power i like, yet . . . i'd say forget it

3. otoh, the Wizards tower is AWESOME - IF you are a mage.
You get superb alchemical supplies and +15 skill boost while you are there, rare herbs growing there, great storage [if you like all your stuff stored by category], the altars of enchanting and spell making [the "familiar' you get to follow you is *broken* and often disappears - for good and you cannot make another - its the only bug i found in the tower], teleportation to ALL the Mages Guilds . .
. . . and it's a great building with a "cool" view.

unlike what i did, it is probably "best" to do one Major Guild at a time or it can get confusing and you can "mess up" .

If you want efficiency finish the Thieves Guild and then do the Dark Brotherhood Quests [kill an 'innocent' and go to sleep - you will be 'contacted'] . . .

. . . you can do the Shrines in-between - hint: don't fast-travel at least for 100 hours or so - . . . you find them as you travel and get a big *reward* after you do 'em all] . . . then you INfamy will be maxed.

Then dfinishng the Arena - Grand Champion - will give you a "fame balance" and you can do whatever you like - unemcombered by infamy.

and NO, it doesn't matter how you approach it. . . .

it is an AWESOME game

[i have 400 real-time hours into the game including "repairing quests" and i am even doing the "construction set thing" . . . i know Oblivion pretty well]

Yay, my first quest glitch

*posible spoiler*

It's the last Thieves Guild quest - close to the end - I'm in the library and I'm supposed to "have a seat" but I snooped around the library first, and while doing so, accidentally took myself out of Sneak mode, which put one of the monks on "alert" - not fully hostile - but he won't "un-alert" himself, and now when I sit down, he gets halfway down the stairs, goes hostile, but just stands there... and I'm stuck in the chair - it's one of those scripted events where you have no character control. Thankfully I have an auto-save I can revert to, but it's all the way back at the sewer entrance!

What a pain... that was a long trek, and some of it was jam-packed with Nether Liches and Wraiths - I usually kill everything, but the last couple Thieves Guild quests put you in some spots where starting combat is a very bad idea. I'm putting lots of mileage on my Invisibility spell!

ooh, i didn't sit

just "don't talk" was the quest's requirement . . . are you sure you didn't miss anything else?

ANYway, if you wanna do a little work - easy when you know how - just use the console to "repair" it,.

works great for MOST SQs.

ive been playing Oblivion a while now but feel i havent even scratched the surface as far as content / quests go.

***SPOILERS***

I started just killing ppl left and right and found it intresting to do the dark brotherhood quests. Right now im promoted to Listener.

Thing im wondering about is the jail time spent in a cell for crimes... should i be getting caught for the killings by guards every now and then or just keep trying to evade / not get caught / fight all guards every where i go? (my bounty is currently 400K+, never been to jail)

eventually, you're gonna have to come up with the Gold or lose some time in Jail [you lose a few skills, is all, gain one or 2 others] . . .

i have 750,000 in Gold and annother 1,000,000 in unsold gear. About 400 hours [real time] spent with Oblivion . . . 350 hours actually playing.
:Q

[i even had to learn a bit about the construction set to 'fix' bugs - very interesting and a lot of fun. . . maybe you'll see the apoppin mod, some day]

does everyone that commits crimes let the guards imprision you fairly fast so you have a fresh start sooner rather then later? I tried for fun letting myself get caught after 400k+ bounty buildup and got 3422 days jail time and stat loss of +2 to 5 or so various stats including blade and armour skills... sucks. I figure i can always reload my game back to pre-jail sentence if i dont like it.

If one commits 1 crime and gets caught, is the jail time significantly shorter (since you have a small bounty) rather then like me, get caught with 400k bounty? Maybe its wiser to just get caaught every now and then? I dont know if it really serves a purpose trying to evade getting caught for as long as i have done so far? In fact, i think its only made life more difficult trying to get around. ARG!

All better now

I minded my P's and Q's this time, got what I needed, and blasted off. It was worth redoing though, I missed some content along the way the first time - with a crapload of Acrobatics (115 with Jak's Boots on) you can just jump onto the platform in the ruin where you shoot the arrow into the statue, rather than going down into the ruin to look for the switch. Hell, I didn't even notice the passage down to the sub-levels the first time through... there were one or two nice caches of loot down there.

But that wasn't the main surprise - I tried to recover the Arrow of Extrication after I used it, and I was jumping up onto one of the pedestals with the warrior statues. So there I am on this pedestal, practically rubbing noses with the statue on it...

...and it starts attacking me  that startled me a little Didn't find the arrow though...

Anywho, that's 3 guilds down, one more to go (DB).

You should do the Thieves Guild quest line, you can get a 50% discount on your bounty now, and something else... later that'll help sort out those pesky bounty issues for you. You're SOL though if you went on any killing sprees through the Imperial City waterfront, and wasted any of that guild's key NPCs like Armand Cristophe and possibly Methredhel...

ARG!

depends on your "style" . . . . if you just wanna be a thief and killer, you won't be able to do some quests.

if you have not joined the Thieves Guild . . . do so. You can survive in the shadowy underworld nicely as you have 'brothers' to deal with. DB quest would also be logical. Then the Shrines Quests [to dredge the depths of evil].

i tried being a Level 3 Vampire . . . it is PRIMAL fighting with that much feriocity . . . but a pain to coordinate everyting with the Sunlight . . . i took the cure after 6 days [it's a good quest, anyway]

You might consider becoming a vampire

. . . or doin' your time

it'll be fun no matter what

BTW, i *fixed* my problem with the console and am *finished* . . . 340 hours [and about 50 more with some redos, the fix and construction set] damn . . . 400 hours for $40

the i tried the "recuring hell" mod to ReSpawn the gates . . . so i can find the last 10 Master trainer SQs . . . AFAIK, there are 193 quests in the game [i completed 183 with 2 active - db and arena].

Painman, i hope you kept your boots. Just foprtify everything you can [agility] . . . UNequip them and Jump.

IF your survive [i did . . .no prob; a 'glitch'] you have a GREAT pair of boots to get you to places you look at now. . .. and weigh ZERO.

And yet when you come out 9.5 years later your quests are still active...ROFL

Have boots, will jump I inadvertently read some spoilage so I knew not to wear 'em (not compatible with my DB armor anyway). I survived that "occurrence" with only about a 15-20% health hit - I have 544 on the red stuff along with fortified/maxed Agility and 65 Acrobatics (w/o the boots).

Being level 44 has benefits

as long as you don't get the Beta patch . . .

1. i didn't bother with Horse Armour . . it is just for "damage' and 'looks'

You get superb alchemical supplies and +15 skill boost while you are there, rare herbs growing there, great storage [if you like all your stuff stored by category], the altars of enchanting and spell making [the "familiar' you get to follow you is *broken* and often disappears - for good and you cannot make another - its the only bug i found in the tower], teleportation to ALL the Mages Guilds . .
. . . and it's a great building with a "cool" view.

thanks.

so there arent any new quests associated with these mods then. I think I will wait for the expansion

just "miniQuests" . . . the Wizard's Tower actually resembles a "quest" and you DO get nice enchanted gear and treasure . . . of the 3 available plugins [IF you are a Mage], i'd say the Tower is 'worth it'.

i understand there is an Official "Pirate Ship" - bigger plugin - shortly available . . . you get to raid a pirate ship and then keep it.
:Q

Looks like ~195 Total Quests . . . ~350 places to find . . .
. . . by my calculations, based on what i have done so far, compared to the 'cheats' . . . i had to really "get into" the console to fix the MQ.

[i am getting the Dragon Armor soon, so i will see if Recurring Hell Mod respawns the Gates]
