I don't think it's ATI... You are trying to play a brand new game on a card that was a budget card 4 years ago. If you are having problems. it's because of that.

At least he isn't trying to play it on a godforsaken fx5200 like everyone over on the official forums keeps complaining about. That card couldn't run dx9 games worth a crap when it came out, big surprise its giving 2-4fps in this game.

I personally run this with a Dell E1705 laptop: 2.0GHz Core Duo, 7800go (256MB), & 2GB ram. It autodetected to Ultra High but when I went to play at those settings, inexorable lag. I found the best options for visuals / performance was to max all the settings at a lower resolution. Looks great and not even a stutter!

However when my friend tried the game on his computer, it was begging for mercy. I'm super confused as to why everyone is saying this game is friendly to low end machines. He has an Athlon XP 2500+, 1.2GB ram, & NVidia FX 5700 Ultra. Even at 640x480 and everything turned down it is unplayable. It's unlikely to be the fault of his computer as it can run other games just fine; not that I expect it to be a speed demon either as this game is very detailed.

I played for probably 4 hours last night... wow...

I've never played morrowind, so I find it hard to tell where to get quests, etc... but I'll learn...

Can anyone tell me how to get a horse legally? I can steal one sure - but then I'm always hated in that town...

Cool... thanks...

Don't know if I can get into it or not... What's the point of having a theif class, when if I steal something at the beginning of the game, and get busted a lot later it gets taken away? Can't sell stolen stuff as well...

Seems kind of stupid, but like I said... I never played Morrowind, so there's probably a reason...

Try not getting busted... thief types can definitely still go about their business but they need to be cautious and/or clean up their messes.

As for selling stolen items, you need to find a buyer with morals as flexible as your own - they're out there, but they don't advertise their services quite as openly.

20 hours into the game, ~7 quests done and just hit level 4. Sure I could have power gamed and been further along in that time, but I like that I wasn't forced to. Really enjoying the "sandbox" element of the game, just running about collecting alchemy components, hunting deer, and poking about in non-quest dungeons.

Athlon 64 3200+, 7800GS AGP, 1gig ram, audigy 2 - still tweaking settings to find a nice 1280x1024 compromise, 1024x768 is a reliable backup if I want most bars maxed.

Love it (360). We've (my fiancee and I; she's really the one playing most of it) played for about 7 hours and haven't even completed a single quest... it's been all dungeon-crawling and land exploration for us so far. Finally decided to talk to someone about joining the Thieve's Guild, so maybe we'll do that and that "Go Fish" quest sometime soon.

Trying to build up as much as possible before starting the main quests. We're more or less a warrior with some minor stealth capabilities. I'm going to work hard to build up his magic, though.

Sometimes objects such as a giant boulder only ~100 yards in the distance have a bad habit of popping up right in front of your very eyes, which gets a little annoying. Otherwise I'm fairly impressed, especially with the crypts. They look incredible. I figure we'll work on it on 360 for a while; after we upgrade the PC this fall (A64 3500+, 1 gig, X800XL right now) hopefully there'll be some great mods out so we can buy it for the PC.

Adam is kinda right. you do have to be cautious with it but sometimes its ridiculous when they catch u. Also if you go into someones house and decide u want to kill them while they sleep u cant. i dont like the whole pick who can be killed thing. I understand if u got NPCs that are part of the quests but give me more.
Yea its morbid but theres nothing like jacking someone in there sleep and stealing there vase.

Thats the most funny thing i've heard all week. How can something be worse when its better then the game before it in every way. Your the first person that has said that, you might be one of those people that always loves to hate on things that are good. Why is Morrowind better?

Im hoping i can run at native with my 215tw with all the eye candy or else it looks like some thing will have to be sold to get a better videocard and mine as well get a dual core while at it.
I used to be a RPGer but havent played any in a long time. been mostly FPSes but I will give my take on the game. as soon as i play some. If you dont hear a review for 4 hours from me. Well then know its good i got the week off with nothing to do.

I'm in the same boat, the urge to pick this title up is starting to take over me. Might need to hit BB tonight.

I don't think it's ATI... You are trying to play a brand new game on a card that was a budget card 4 years ago. If you are having problems. it's because of that.

You'll note that I didn't complain about performance. I'm satisfied with the card's performance. I didn't expect to play at 1680x1050 with max settings... I complained about the driver/card crashing and having to reset itself. That's inexcusable. If you want to argue that time-to-market pressure excuses a few bugs with new cards, well, you said yourself my card isn't very new so they really should have ironed EVERYTHING out by now. I did update my driver and it seems a little more stable (the ATI recovery thing still come up sometimes), though I did notice some missing polygons when I was running around Oblivion (through the gate in front of Kvatch, at part where the boulders roll down a hill and across your path).

I've found that most people on this forum tend to go nuts on interpreting "system requirements" in general - I played FEAR and HL2 on a similar system (same card, slightly faster CPU, less RAM) and both were great.

edit: Speaking of Kvatch, did anyone else notice that you can just walk around the Oblivion portal and enter the city anyway? I walked in, figured I should do the quest in order, and walked back out and went through the portal.

I love this game. The world is huge - and feels huge - and the combat is spectacular IMO. Really an improvement since the past. The graphics are amazing, as well as the sandbox element. I am level four, and have played four probably 7 hours.

***weak spoiler***

I just spoke to Jauffre. I walked to the town, and after I talked to him I just dungeon crawled an d went exploring.

Its a great game and I am loving it.

A few minor annoyances though..

1. Guards are always 10 levels higher than you. I find that kinda lame, but its not a big deal. Maybe it can be fixed in the CS.

2. Guards know all your stolen items. A carry over from the past, but this is one carry over I dislike. Again, not really a big deal.

And that is it for annoyances

I really didn't enjoy Morrowind all that much. I could never fully get into the game. What kind of differences are there between Morrowind and Oblivion?

just to post in a non locked thread. apparently for 6800 and older cards, you can gain a big performance jump by installing coolbits and lowering "frames prerendered" (something like that) from 3 to 0.
stolen from elderscrolls forums, but i can't give link from work.. it's one of only 2 sites blocked wtf?

Seriously, I said I was going to snag it friday afternoon on the way home from work...but I almost went to BB today to get it. The only thing that stopped me was I don't have a dvd-rom drive to install it with yet.

Yeah, I read that thread too. Seemed like it helped a lot of people. But it can hurt framerates in other games from what I read. Can you setup a "profile" for just one game and have the settings revert?

How the heck are you level 4 already? I've walked to the town that Jauffre is in, talked to him... had to kill the troll that wanted me to pay to cross the bridge... etc... I'm still only level 1.

Am I missing quests somewhere? How do I tell what gives a quest/what quests I have???

*Frustrated* I don't understand... lol

How do you think I feel man. My copy is with the DHL courier now, but I am working on my thesis from now until Monday with breaks only for sleep. This game was released at exactly the wrong time. It's staying in the box until my draft is accepted! And you all are holding me to that! Dammit! :|
