i played for a bit at my brothers tonight

alot of interesting gameplay improvements over morrowind, wasnt expecting the combat to be so fast-paced, but its cool and i like how the magic system is worth a damn now.

i look forward to having it myself, one day. ive gotten countless hours from morrowind, im sure this will be no different.

battlemage ftw!

Over my weekend (Tue-Wed) I put in about 16-18 hours on the game. I've always been partial to the rogue/thief classes, but this time I wanted to try something different. I ended up making a Mage/Thief, kind of mixing the best of both classes together for Major Skills. It is definitely an interesting combination, I have proficiency for both heavy and light armor so I can either sneak through and pick off targets at discretion, or just go all out with destruction spells and get in the thick of it.

It really is an improvement over Morrowind in my opinion. I like the fast travel aspect, it allows you to get to objectives quickly when you want to soak up some story/enjoy the quest-lines, and leaves more time for casual exploring. I always felt pressured to find what I was looking for in Morrowind, whereas in Oblivion, most of the time I'm happy to be lost. I like how you are approached by NPCs for quests, for instance...if you recently went through some ruins and came out with a few artifacts and then decided to sell them at the market...a character will greet you later and hand you a note from his employer saying how he/she is interested in those same artifacts that you recently sold, and invites you to meet with them. It feels much more like a living breathing world, not quite to the scale I think it could be/would like it be, but a vast improvement nevertheless. There is a more immediate accessibility this time around, which makes me want to keep playing right off the bat. With Morrowind it took me a long time to really get into it, I would put it down and pick it up weeks later, and then get bored trying to get my bearings back figuring out what it was that I was working on previously. It took me a while to really get into it before I was hooked on how expansive and enjoyable the game could be.

There are only a few gripes I have with it. One being the lack of activity/people in towns...I realize there are technical limitations, but I'd expect an Imperial City at the center of everything, to at least be kind of busy during daylight/dusk. Like for instance walking in to an Inn/Bar, I would expect to encounter music, singing/laughing/conversations, people stumbling around with mugs in their hand, people tearing into some roasted animal parts, that one rowdy guy that just can't handle being intoxicated in public being dragged out by the town guard, etc...instead it is just a few people, shuffling around awkwardly, occasionally saying something random or greeting you over and over again.
Another is the conversations the NPCs will sometimes have with each other. It isn't really a big deal, but there are times when it just isn't natural at all. They will start random topics that have nothing to do with what was said previously, or even respond to a completely different topic when someone is talking to them. It doesn't happen all the time but enough to kind of make you go, "WTF was that all about!?" Though the sheer randomness of it can be kind of comical...

All in all, I've raided a few dungeons, closed about 6 Oblivion gates, got to Grand Champion in the arena, joined the Mages Guild, got an invite to the Thieves Guild after a side-quest led me to being arrested, and made it to The Silencer rank in the Dark Brotherhood (I can't tell you how much fun I had with this one...oh if only WoW had fully developed class specific quests). It is a very enjoyable game, and I will be playing it for quite some time to come.

*By the way for any of you thieves out there, join the Dark Brotherhood and/or Thieves Guild, it will make your life much easier.*

Just out of curiousity, are custom alchemy and enchanting still in the game? And if they are can you still do the Int. stat boost -> alchemy loop? (i.e. make a potion that increases Int., drink that, make another potion, ad infinitium).

For alchemy, if it is still in the game it will take you a long time to do it. Unlike Morrowind you can't just go to Sadrith Mora and sock up on thousands of yams and bloat ash(IIRC) to make your potions. While you can buy alchemy supplies in a lot of places, I haven't found anyone in the game at all that has a limitless supply- and they don't get their stocks replenished as quickly as they did in Morrowind either. As for enchantments, I still haven't made it far enough to deal with them yet(I can try as of now, but not with the soul of anything making it worth while).

also, on top of that, there is a limit to the amount of potions you can drink in a given amount of time. i've tried

Nice! My rig is pretty similar (3000+ @ 2.4ghz, 1gb corsair @ 220mhz, x850xt) and I only hope to run it at 1024x768 with no AA. So far it seems like this game might be a bit more friendly to ATI cards for some reason. We'll see if I can get things rolling on my wife's PC with a 6800nu.

in a word, none

its basically exactly like morrowind but i find it easier to play and more colorful than morrowind.

Did you like Morrowind?
Do you like Oblivion?
I hear alot of people saying they disliked Morrowind and enjoy Oblivion.

i hated morrowind but so far i am likeing oblivion

Never played any of the Elder Scrolls but decided to get Oblivion because of the hype.

I keep getting killed very frequently, I am not sure if I'm not getting a part of this game or I just am sucking at combat.

It says I need to go into the gates of Oblivion to find a way to turn it off except I keep getting double-teamed 60% of the time.

Any advice or should I consider selling this back on ebay to someone who played Morrowind before?

Have you played any RPG?

i tried many . . . and only was able to "get into" KotOR series after many hours [and finally, love it thoroughly].

RPG is VERY different from FPS . . . keep trying . . . look for a walkthru or tips . . . i'd say Oblivion is "worth it".

I got the CE last night in the mail. Played about 3 hours. I'll preface by saying that I haven't played any of the other games in the Elder Scrolls series, other than a brief 10 minute walk around at the beginning of Morrowind on my friend's computer. That being said, here's my impressions:

- BEAUTIFUL graphics, but damn are they taxing on the system
- The scale of this game I can already tell is EPIC in proportion
- I really like the way combat and skills are handled

Other than that, I can't really say much else as I've just barely had a chance to get through the tutorial dungeon and explore the first city a little. This will be consuming most of my time this weekend.

A couple of problems/glitches:

- Last night I was walking on the road to the first objective you get after completing the dungeon, I hit a spot on a hill where my character would start falling a few feet and then returning. I could also walk right through the landscape. Rebooted and it was fine again, but just weird.
- I've had a few crashes, mostly when going inside a dungeon/house/etc. Done the Coolbits fix, tried tickering with the ini file
- For some reason, most people's faces look like they have pixelated shadows on the bottom half of their faces. It's kind of annoying.

I think tonight/tomorrow I'll mess around with the .ini file a good deal and see what I can come up with.

I'm debating on whether to get it on PC or the 360. My PC could PROBABLY handle it decently, but I just got a 360 yesterday and I need games for that.

Those of you who own the 360 copy, is the game fairly easy to control? Never played an RPG, much less one on a console and am just curious.

Is this a good RPG to start out with? I usually never have any problems figuring out new games but I normally only play FPS/racing games

Does anyone have any problems going toe to toe against an enemy? I'm a thief wearing leather with shield. I'll get my ass handed to me, so I just kite the foe and shoot arrows up their ***. I'm thinking about going to heavier armor if it allows me to use my sword instead of bow, but want to know if anyone can do it toe to toe, especially in the arena.

OMFG your right. Well can't say that I have seen that before. Can you actually play off the backup? Seems odd that they would allow that to work.

Oh yeah, played last night on a 3000+ Barton / 1 GB RAM / 9800 Pro. I ended up using the lowest Widescreen resolution (playing on a 2005FPW) with quality at medium. It does not look at all like the demo videos they posted on the Oblivion video in the past few weeks but I didn't expect it to. But it is a ton of fun. Very tempting reason to upgrade the hardware or buy a 360. Those shadows in the video previews looked amazing. Anyone actually getting those details on SLI GTX's or something?

Yea, I loved KOTOR (1 was awesome, 2 not as awesome but still was fun!).

I just decreased the difficulty of the game to about 25% as it was like 50% before (by default) and I got killed too many times and now I can actually fight without dying and just finished the Gate of Oblivion stuff. So I'm getting more used to it

Yea, I was asking about that in my last post, I couldn't ever fight without getting at least 70% of my health knocked off (or better yet, getting killed). I decreased the difficulty on it... I just didn't know how to manage fights or I simply suck at the combat part but I'd rather make the game playable rather than getting my butt kicked every few minutes.

evidently it is an eXact copy that i am playing with . . . . no copy protection [obviously - or they would not mention you can make a copy]

very nice . . . no worried about a scratched original [or lost DVD key].

i am a n00b as to RPGs . . . but there are so many "upgrades" and skills, the game advances you depending on what you like . . . try wearing better armor and using healing potions . . . anticipate enemies, sneak and use arrows . . .

i think it just takes getting "used to" . . . i never tried Morrowind or any RPG [other than a few hours] - except KoTOR [btw, Sith Lords has some nice "fan made" bug fixes and a 'fan made' expansion of sorts is pretty far along.

and don't forget to BLOCK attacks.

great game!

Okay, got the game last night. Liked it so far, though for some reason after I loaded a save game the game got darker. Anyway, here are some things I came across:

1. DO NOT Let your wife buy the game for you. Otherwise, you will get the Collector's version. Basically, you pay $10 extra for a fake coin.

2. Had choppiness that was solved by updating my Nvidia and Soundblaster drivers. Now runs smooth.

3. Game crashed last night. Removed Soundman.exe in task manager and set AA on my hardware to 4x and non in the game. Seems that those two fixes are among several possible fixes for the crashes. Played this morning, no crashes.

4. HOW DO YOU LIGHT A TORCH???????

I just got out of the first dungeon myself.. so I've hardly played the game. However, I am going to reload a saved game and change my class and sign.
Has anyone found any really good fan sites with good FAQs, etc about the game?

The game has "crashed" on me a couple times.. where the screen goes entirely black. Anything thats not 3D stays on the screen though. maybe my Vid Card is overheating? I checked it and it topped at 71C. (an overclocked 7800GT). This game really hammers the video card.. I run other 3D tests on my Vid card and it tops out at about 64C.

Light a torch by clicking it. It's in the tools section of the inventory. When you swap your weapon, the torch comes out.

I like the game so far. It's a definite improvement over Morrowind in every category. Still though, I like the Gothic series better, and am very eagerly awaiting Gothic 3.

If you guys haven't played Gothic yet, and I know most of you haven't, you don't know what you're missing.

The idea of having my wife buy a game for me is so outside my worldview of reality that the thought had never crossed my mind.

Yeah, haven't had a crash yet.

Equip it. Go into your inventory and click on it. Then you need to sheathe your weapon if it's 2 handed, and not use a shield.

Strangely if you unsheathe a 2H weapon, the torch just disappears. It's apparently still lit because it will eventually disappear (whereas unlit ones stay in your inventory). Not quite sure where the character stashes it.

Yeah, never heard of it. The screen shots of Gothic 3 actually look even better than Oblivion - something that I didn't even know was possible. The fans of Gothic 2 seem like an enthusiastic crowd. I'll keep an eye out for Gothic 3, and I'll consider mail-ordering Gothic 2 some day in the distant future when I give up on Oblivion. Thanks for the head's up. I'm always looking for a decent RPG and I had no idea this one even existed.
