Noob question about skills/leveling...

Let's say I wanted to increase my agility attribute including the +5 bonus. I decide I want to do this purely with sneaking (which is a minor skill) which means I need to increase my sneaking skill by 10 points before I level. So, I play for a few hours and level my sneaking skill a few times.

Is there any place to check how many times I have leveled my sneaking skill since my last attribute level? In other words, is there some menu that can show me I have completed 6 out of the needed 10 sneaking levels (required for the +5 agility)?

You can see a progress meter for all of your skills. Is that what you're looking for?

This will work. It's simply a book/journal in your inventory that keeps track of all increases for you.

there isnt a place where you can see the incremental difference. The best you can do is to memorize the skill level immediately after levelling up and then using the difference to see how much you have levelled up.

Move up the difficulty slider. The game gets way harder even if you move it just a bit. Kinda defeats the purpose of leveling up your character to make him more powerful, but then so does the auto balancing system.

Actually, there are 5 levels of Sigil Stones: Descendant, Subjacent, Latent, Ascendant, Transcendant, although I must say that only the Transcendant ones are worth getting.

BTW 100% Chameleon is not fun.

well, you have to remember what they were . . .
. . . then click on the stats page . . . from the same place you check your inventory and spells . . . click on the 3 parallel bars.

. . . and you can leave your character "sneaking" [or running] in a corner instead of pausing to increase your Skills.

Sureshot324, Moving the Difficulty Slider ALL the way to MAX still does NOT make it harder for an Expert of Sneak with 115 Chameleon . . . you can RUN up to a Daedra Spider carrying a Torch and just hit away 'till she dies . . . she won't even react . . .
[the game is *broken* in this regard]

it is MUCH better to decrease your Chameleon.
[unless you like a no-clip godmode]

300 hours into the game, 500K in Gold, investing in shops, have ALL the awesome Gear [Daedric and Glass] . . . all 8 furnished houses . . .

and the patch is USEful . . . it is necessary to finish a Thief Guild Quest [if you took a "wrong" turn].

I've read many pages of this thread, but not all of them. I hope this question has not already been posed. I've never really played single player rpgs, unless you count the Zelda series. But, I have played WoW before and the whole multiplayer aspect of that game really was appealing. I think the final fantasy games always looked somewhat boring, but I never gave them a try. Oblivion is single player, but everyone has been raving about the game. So is it likely I'd enjoy it, even if I've never really played many rpgs?

. . . the ONLY other RPG i liked and finished was KotOR series - but the turn based-fighting is gawd-awful to FPSers - the Story is Awesome.

give it a try . . . don't even worry about the character development . . . you'll catch on.

Does ANYone know why the Oblivion Gates stopped spawning after i shut number 38?

After the battle for Bruma they start spawning very slowly. They still will show up now and then, but not nearly as often as they do between the time when you wipe out the cave full of those particular people in the main quest and when you fight that battle.

Weren't you the one that was leveling with skills you don't use in major? If so, that's why. And you're level 18, just starting to see the good stuff in the game. At the rate you're going, you'll never reach level 40. You're missing out on what the high level game is like while trivializing the lower level content.

Oblivion is a single player RPG, it is just so huge and there is so much to do it may sound like a MMORPG.

Darn, I killed off the main quest because I got sick of gates popping up everywhere. Just slowing 'em down would have been good enough. I could go back with an old save, but that would wipe 17 hours of progress in the guilds since that point - though I might still do it...

Sigil stones aren't much use to me, but I kinda miss slapping Dremora around

Thanks for responding to my question. I can see that you're sold on it. I've watched many videos of the game, and the only reason the reviews haven't convinced me is because of a simliar situation with HL2. Almost everyone seems to love that game and call it one best games ever. In terms of a first person shooter, I'd say it's nearly flawless compared to others out there. In its own right, it's an awesome game. However, it's still a single player game. My expectations were through the roof when I bought that game, so maybe i was being unrealistic. Either way, I never finished the whole game, because I got bored with it.

I guess after playing multiplayer games, i'm skeptical of a game like Oblivion that reaches towards the pinnacle of RPG gaming but has no multiplayer element. I'm still undecided, but the more I read about it, the more I think I may pick up a copy.

To be honest, I actually enjoy Oblivion because it's single player only. It's like an MMORPG where everybody actually has believable names and, most importantly, ROLE PLAYS. I don't like the level grinding mentality that a lot of MMORPG players have because it seems to take away from the point of a role playing game.

My first three or four level ups in Oblivion came before I fought a single enemy. I went around the first town for several days just talking to people and stealing/buying/selling stuff. One of my friends is playing as an assassin type character, so he relies on alchemy to poison his weapons. He spends most of his time wandering in the wilderness picking ingredients. The world is interesting enough that I actually don't like fighting and gathering loot.

Ditto. I prefer SP to MMO.

The "level grinding" mentality happens when people don't want to just play a fun game, but rather when they want to play a game *better* than everyone else. And that's exactly why I get tired of MMO's. It's all about which dorkwad has the stronger/richer character. For me, it has nothing to do with fun or skill, just how much time you have to waste.

And yes, I've played MANY MMO's.

JW but whenever I see an oblivion gate well not even see it whenever it appears on the compass I getlike 1-2fps >.< with an X1600 pro. I know it's not that great of a card but I bought it just to run oblivion. I'm running it with no bloom or HDR. 2xaa at 1024x768. It runs perfectly fine and well in the cities and even with grass turned all the way on it's fine I can play perfectly. It runs fine 1024x768 HDR with many things high. I'm not to annoyed by fps I guess I'm used to it but around oblivion gates... ugh well anything I can do? JW does anybody else get this problem? Most review sites show the X1600 pro doing decent atleast. I have already oc'd the core by 85mhz and the memory by 20/40...

Weren't you the one that was leveling with skills you don't use in major? If so, that's why. And you're level 18, just starting to see the good stuff in the game. At the rate you're going, you'll never reach level 40. You're missing out on what the high level game is like while trivializing the lower level content.

i am 300 hours and Level 21 . .. so what? . . . i am missing NOTHING - i get exactly the same gear as you do [with lesser atttributes] and face identical opponents that you do [at my Level].

Chameleon is THAT good . . . it is a *gamebreaker* . . . a legal cheat and one that you can get early if you Sneak . . .

and when i started Oblivion, i had ZERO idea how to leval or what the hell to choose . . . as it turned out my minor skills are the ones i like and use and my major ones are suck.

actually i would be much futher but found a damn *Major* bug in the Final Shrines Quest that stops you cold and that the patch does not address . . . ruined my parallel progress in the TG Quest.

i mean ZERO gates for the past two complete level-ups including hours of just "riding and looking".
