I'm doing the Thieves Guild quests right now and I have a problem with the "Taking Care Of Lex" quest.

The "stranger" who forges my letter tells me to come back in 24 hrs. I've tried 24 hours, 48 hrs and more and he keeps telling me he's busy. Any way to trigger the event so he'll give me the letter?

When you talk to him, are you talking to him while he's in the house? or walking around? He has to be in the house. And how did you wait? Did you actually use the wait command? Or did you go to bed? Try going to bed and coming back.

Thanks, i'll try that... around the waterfront i've tried waiting for an entire day and the fog doesn't go away

EDIT: tried that.. it affects the minimap, not actual environmental fog.

sorry i never tried it . . . there might be some cheats linked to from the official Ob forums . . .

and maybe just return in a week . . . fog only last a short 'season'

and i use 'detect life' when it gets thick.

AT "search" is very broken, so sorry for this stupid post...

I'm having trouble finding information on how to do performance testing in Oblivion. How do you get FPS and such? Is there a Demo that can simply be run like in F.E.A.R and most first person shooters?

Right now I'm trying to isolate and test two sets of RAM to see which has the performance edge, but I would like Oblivion to be part of my benching suite generally.

I can't reinstall oblivion. i have uninstalled it and now it will now allow me to install it back. in the launcher it only lists uninstall and not install... i have no idea what to do please help.

I saw something like this in the readme. Instead of uninstalling from add/remove, just run setup.exe from the install disk. It's supposed to clear up the problems. I know u tried the installer. Is the setup.exe the installer?[I mean, des another program call setup.exe or do you double click setup.exe?] If not, then setup.exe may work.

Oblivion will run fine for a minute and then it will have about a 5 second pause, and then run fine again for another minute. Very annoying. I can run around in a landscape with no problem but as soon as I see someone or something it'll stop for that pause and wait, and then I hear a rapid harddrive crunch, and then it will go again without any problems. It seems to happen when I do a special effect like a spell or a swirling of assassins dying at the first level. What's going on?

Can't help with FEAR or Prey. I don't do Shooters. But if Prey is Open GL, you might do all right. It's with Dx9 and its Shader Model Two Functionality that the FXes fall apart on. I have played Oblivion with two FXes (both of those only rather short, they were so bad), then with a 9800 XT, followed by an X800 XT-PE. The ATI cards were really great to play on. I have a 6600 GT in the PC that formerly had an FX 5900 plain, and the 6600 GT is really awful at generating a quality image.

Your XT is basically just an "LE" or "SE", being a detuned card for lowered pricing. It will be pretty slow for anything outdoors in Oblivion, unless you get the Oldblivion helper Mod that swaps Dx8 shaders and will speed up the FX 5700 and upward into playability. My 5900 plain was reasonably good indoors, but the image quality was lacking. Outdoors and in most cities, it was barely playable. In the Deep Woods, it flat out died.

On a better note I have had very few in game crashes (to desktop). Only about 2 or so with ~43 hours play time.

I'm asking because I have a 7900 GT with a dual core AMD processor and I'm trying to get as close to max as I can. Right now it is running with everything full, but it glitches every few secondes if its raining in a busy area of town. Or if I have a number of enemy around.

I've already got the coolbits fix going.

VSYnc reduces graphics tearing (caused by the difference in speed of the gfx card and the monitor, usually looks like textures in the wrong place)
by making the graphics card wait for the monitor refresh, obviously this limits fps but the higher your refresh rate the higher the limit is
60HZ=60fps
70HZ=70fps and so on
i couldnt find a good pic of tearing, but if you have some, you'll definitely notice it

I think i found a bug.

In the mission where my character takes Martin back to Jauffre, and after some fighting reaches Jauffre, Jauffrey checks and sees the amulet taken.

The next quest is updated, I quit and goto sleep.

Wake up today, load the autosave, and I'm trying to find Jauffrey so he can see the amulet taken and update the quest (it reverted to the last active quest).

Now I have Martin and me in Weynon Priory looking for Jauffrey (nowhere to be found) and stuck. Ugh and the last save game (because I quicksaved again, stupid me and the autosave got overwritten) was like 2 hours of playtime back.

Any ideas? Game is fully updated.

To add to my post, is there a way I can add the next quest to my next quest via a cheat? I'm in the bloody Jauffre guy's house, he just disappeared after the autosave without updating my autosaved quest log. Would like that to be there in the active quests so I can move on in the game, and not have to play 2-3 hours worth just to get back to this point.

you automatically have a autosave backed up and the save before it i think called "autosave.bak" or something like it - it's been a LONG time . . . look in saved games and rename your backup to the current autosave [after moving the regular one] and load it.

and yes, you can advance quests thru the console . . . 'search' as above
[it takes a little doing but you can get help from the modders section if you are really stuck]

Now I have another issue, I dropped my gladiator outfit suit thingy in wilverin to make room but when I came back it was gone. After wasting quite a bit of time, I still can't find it. And can't fight in the Arena if I don't have it on.

Any ideas?

Another weird issue. When I goto a shrine and interact with it my guy gets stuck, no matter what shrine. Basically he can turn around but not move anywhere, or equip weapons, or fast travel. Any ideas? Thx again.

PS: OMG what a @#%@#% addictive game..omg haven't had this kind of addiction since diablo 2 (tho far cry came close).
