Hi all,
Question about some OCZ RAM I bought recently.
Specifically: OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)

I also am building a rig with an Opteron 165, and a ASUS A8N-SLI Premium NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Mobo.

Will the RAM i've purchased be a bottleneck when I go to OC my opty? Or in other words, if I go with 2GB of
mushkin eXtreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 500 (PC 4000) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit, will see a better OC ?

Seriously frustrated with my OCZ Plat Kit (2X1 Gig DDR 400). Bought OCZ because I heard good things about it but not in my experience.

It will not memtest86 (pass) at stock speeds and timings (e.g. DDR 400, 2,3,2,5 not OC'd)
It will not memtest86 (pass) at relaxed timings 2.5, 4, 4, 8

I could not get the rebate since I can't exchange the memory without a UPC. Using it on a DFI nf4 Ultra-D. Tried both sets of slots, reseating, no dice.

Undoubtedly the worst $200 I've ever spent on memory.

I've built 5 systems the past couple years with generic, G.Skill (much better performance/price and it actually works) and Corsair RAM, never had a stick that's bad.

I would not recommend buying this RAM from newegg as several other people have had the same complaint. No support from Newegg. E-mailed Steve @ OCZ.

Overclocking the CPU has nothing to do with the ram, you can set a divider and get the CPU as high as you like. The Platinum Rev 2 you have run quite high on that board depending on the sticks...you could see 250+ from the kit.

Settings you can try are located here: http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15898

We offer a lifetime warranty on our ram, if its defective we will replace it.
Go ahead and send in the UPC symbol off the package for the rebate, we do not require that to get your memory RMA'd.
This ram runs just fine on the DFI Ultra-D, your kit just needs to be replaced.

Thanks

Hello Davey,

That ram is no longer made by OCZ and I do not know if any of the guys have a kit laying around. It has been gone for about a year and a half or so now.

I will see if I can find some info that will help.

Send me an email, its in my Sig.

Thanks

Here's a question...

I'm currently running 2x512mb PC3200 OCZ VR (OCZ4001024V25DC-K) at 220mhz 2.75v 2.5-4-4-8. I need to add another gb of ram to my system, should I be able to expect the same OC from another gb of this same ram, or is my ram a fluke?

Am I tempting fate by running at this voltage? Come to think of it, I haven't even tried it at 2.65. I should probably test that.

FYI: BIOS only allows 2.55v, 2.65v, 2.75v, 2.85v.

Thanks for any insights, or additional suggestions.

-z

EDIT: Minor testing at 2.65v, 2 instances of P95 (one Large FFTs, the other Blend) while browsing the web and downloading for an hour, no errors. Will do the full memtest tonight.

With 4 sticks it's hard to say if you'll make it to 220FSB again. I've used the P4P800 with 4 sticks in the past and I do remember than running 4 sticks instead of 2 gave me less of an overclock, but I think that was when I started getting into the 240FSB range.

You're best bet would be to buy the 2GB performance set and sell off the 2 sticks you have now

Hey Steve,

Having issues with some OCZ RAM I bought recently.
Specifically: OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)

I recently built a rig with an Opteron 165 and a ASUS A8N-SLI Premium NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Mobo, and with both RAM sticks in (1 GB ), I get a blue screen shortly after booting into windows. It only lasts a second, then auto reboots. With only 1 stick in (512MB), my system seems stable. I've run memtest overnight on both sticks and no errors. Is is a mobo capatibility thing, or perhaps the timings? I've changed timings to 2.5-3-2-5 like I think I've seen recommended.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this? It's driving me batty! Thanks!

p.s. I also think i remember hearing about a support guide outlining preferred RAM timings/brands for specific mobos, but cant seem to find the link

Hi Steve, thanks for your help.

I tried these settings in my BIOS and put the other stick of ram back in, but still get intermittent blue screens.

I also stepped back my CPU freq from 250 to 240 to make sure that wasn't an issue. My Opteron had up to 9x multiplier, but only up to 1.50 CPU voltage.

It sure sounds to me like it has something to do with the RAM because it's stable with either stick in but not both, but I'm not sure what else to do. Any ideas ?

What powersupply and video card do you have? What is your cooling situation? CPU temps? Bios and drivers upto date?

Steve,

I have a Antec 500W smartpower 2.0 power supply, and an eVGA 7900GT vid card.

Im using a coolermaster case with an 80mm fan in front, 120mm fan in back. I'm using the stock heatsink that came with my Opteron 165, and i'm currently idling around 49C (which I think is a bit high, i'm considering reseating the heatsing on the processor to see if that helps).

My bios is the most current I think, revision 1009.

Steve I have a question.
My system:

Opty 144
Abit AN8 Sli
OCZ 2gb DDR500 (OCZ5002048ELGEGXTK)
Antec SmartPower 2.0 500watt
16xNec DVD Burner
Geforce 6800 currently using VGA.

What would be the optimal oc setting for the Memory ?
Also The Memory detects as a DDR400 when it's suppose to be DDR500. Why is that ?

I have the lastest bios installed on the Abit.

**EDIT**
I"m in the process of running Memtest
and it's showing as DDR401 3-4-3-7 (Suppose to be 3-4-3-8).

I'll know if there are any errors or what not in about 30 min

Unless you're oc'ing, it will show up as DDR400. You just have that extra 50Mhz of headroom for later oc'ing.

Steve,

I'm thinking about RMA'ing this ram and trying another kind. no matter how relaxed the timings, i'm still getting blue screens. : (

What bakes my noodle is the fact that my roomate has the same mobo as me, ASUS A8N-SLI Premium NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX, and he uses a 2 x 1GB OCZ platinum kit. I don't know if it's "revision 2" like mine, but I can't think of why mine would give me problems. He has an X2 processor and a 7800GT GPU, as opposed to my Opteron 165 and 7900GT, do you think there could be a conflict with one of these pieces of hardware?

Thanks so much for your help...

I have to agree with gagan. That psu isn't cutting it and you should really lower those CPU temps. If you're not getting memtest errors in this case I really think the problem is elsewhere

Recently started OC'ing rig in sig. Going in 10MHz FSB increments (210, 220, 230) I noticed a steady drop in my 12V rail on my powerstream 520. At 230 FSB (2530 MHz CPU), it actually causes the led on the back to be half green and half orange. Is this to be expected? I haven't adjusted the rails at all (sticker still covering the screws) and I didn't have time to measure w/ a DMM last night as I was noticing this. Will be trying that tonight though.

Edit:
Using Smartguardian/BIOS, 12v was 11.96-12.01 @ stock. When going from 2.2GHz to 2.53GHz 12v consistently went down as far as 11.39-11.45. Backed it off to 220 (2.42GHz) and 12v went back up to 11.64. Thoughts?

I dont know about your psu but my Antec stays steady.
Atleast that's what my uGuru is telling me when I play around with my FSB

I jsut can't get the timing right.

This should not be happening. Test it with a DMM and if you get the same results send me and email so I can replace the PSU for you

Checked it with the dmm and got 11.83. I adjusted the rail back to 12.1 and went back to the OC I had previously tried (230x11) and the rail was ok.

Edit:
11.83 was at stock FSB. Adjusted the rail there and the readings didn't change in smartguardian. I forgot to check the rail with the DMM @2.53. I'll check when I get home. Is 7 hour Prime stable right now.
