Re: OCZ EL DDR PC-4000 Gold GX XTC 2GB Dual Channel:

This ram did NOT work in my Asus A8V Deluxe, even when set at PC-3200 speeds and loose timings.

After getting memtest errors on the first set, doing one RMA, and getting memtest errors on the replacement set, I gave up and bought some Corsair XMS 2x1024gb (an Asus tech said Corsair tends to work well with this board).

I really wish the OCZ ram had worked... I feel like I wasted good money on it, and was really looking forward to overclocking.

At 230 FSB (2530 MHz CPU), it actually causes the led on the back to be half green and half orange. Is this to be expected? I haven't adjusted the rails at all (sticker still covering the screws) and I didn't have time to measure w/ a DMM last night as I was noticing this. Will be trying that tonight though.

Edit:
Using Smartguardian/BIOS, 12v was 11.96-12.01 @ stock. When going from 2.2GHz to 2.53GHz 12v consistently went down as far as 11.39-11.45. Backed it off to 220 (2.42GHz) and 12v went back up to 11.64. Thoughts?

This should not be happening. Test it with a DMM and if you get the same results send me and email so I can replace the PSU for you

steve3 atttt ocztechnology dottt com

Checked it with the dmm and got 11.83. I adjusted the rail back to 12.1 and went back to the OC I had previously tried (230x11) and the rail was ok.

Edit:
11.83 was at stock FSB. Adjusted the rail there and the readings didn't change in smartguardian. I forgot to check the rail with the DMM @2.53. I'll check when I get home. Is 7 hour Prime stable right now.

Thanks for the update

This is the first I've heard of problems with this combo. Did you swap the OCZ kit for the Corsair or do you still have it? I can RMA the Gold set for something else if you like.

Really? I didn't realize you could RMA for an alternative product. I emailed back and forth with E. Ryder about this issue a few months back, which led to the RMA.

Yes I do still have the OCZ kit that I received as an RMA.

What alternative would you recommend I swap it for? I'd love PC-4000 for the OC headroom but I don't know what OCZ module would be different enough that it would work with my setup. Have you (or anyone) seen a specific similar OCZ PC-4000 module work in this board?

Hey guys, thanks so much for your responses. What makes you say 550W isn't enough? My roomate uses the same power supply as me, same mobo, same 2 HDs, bigger sticks of RAM than I'm trying to use, and 1 more cdrom than I am using, with no troubles. Granted he is using slightly less power consuming vid card and processor.
I need to get to the bottom of this...

How many watts do you guys think i'd need out of a PSU ?
(Opteron 165, eVGA 7900GT vid card, WD Raptor 78GB HD, Maxtor 300GB HD. Asus A8N-SLI Premium mobo )

Edit :

Using the power calculator here: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp My recommended requirements are 396 Watts.
However, a PSU guide I was reading at http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=136602 recommended "Minimum of +12V@26A for Single Video Card Systems"

My 550W Antec smartpower 2.0 says it has a max 17A output on +12V rail, but it has dual rail. I think that means 2x 17A = 34A, many of the multiple-rail highend PSUs on Newegg 19A on +12V. Do you guys have similar Amperage on your rails ?

A Newegg customer review of my power supply I read said
"Powers my beastly rig without a hitch. Running San Diego 3700+, dual 7900GTs, 4 hard drives (one's a Raptop 150GB), all my fans, and even the cold cathode tubes!"

I'm not convinced my PSU is the problem...

We could go with something like the pc3200 platinum 2GB kit or the PC3700EB which would be my choice.

Send me an email and we can get it rolling

I have OCZ Platinum memory, and I noticed on the memory sticks, where the OCZ logo is, there is a plastic covering over it.

What's with that? Am I suppose to remove it? Or is it there for a purpose?

Do you mean the plastic logo in the center of the sticks? I don't know of any other plastic on the sticks

Yes, it's on top of the logo, the logo is cover with a plastic sheet on mine. You can feel it if you thumb around the logo. Though it doesn't seem to be easily removable...

What is it for? Is it just how the logo is made?

I looked on the last pair of sticks that I got from OCZ and they don't have anything like that on them. Unless you're having problems with the sticks I wouldn't worry about it.

Steve,

I'm setting up a 2nd PC with this mobo. The first PC is using 2x1gb plat OCZ and is doing fine. This is PC will be using Model #: OCZ5002048ELGE-K (2 x 1gb ) and would like to know recommended settings for this memory. Currently, I'm running (since I'm at "work" this is from the top of my head):

Cas 3 4 4 8 (not sure if I have the order right); Vdimm 2.8
I'm using an Opteron 170 on this mobo with bios 1009.
I ran Memtest 1:1 up to CPU freq of 255. At 260, memtest error'd out on test 5.
I using a divider 5:6 (I believe) and ran 260 fine. I'm gonna try to go higher later when I get home.

Any advice on my settings (and the other ones I have no idea what they mean)?

Thanks for your advice

EDIT:

Last night I tried to go to 265, but memtest error'd out even when I ran the 166 divider and Vcore at 1.4. I'd rather not go much higher than 1.4 for Vcore.

Ok I double checked. The new kit is the one on the bottom.

astrophysics the plastic sheet on the sticks is there to protect the logo. You can feel free to peel it off

Sorry Steve (had a brain fart). I copied and pasted my post from my initial posting in the wrong forum. I transferred it here without including the mobo name.

It's the ASUS A8N32SLI deluxe; bios 1009

Thanks for your help

and I gave this one to my friend
I guess that that old one will run hotter because it does'ne have those holes.
This is first time I bought OCZ and I think the last one if they doing such things.

"If they do such things?"
I don't understand, we make small revisions to things from time to time...2 little holes aren't going to make a difference in the cooling particularly.
The retailer had stock of the other heatspreader is all....There is no difference in the kits...they are still rated the same.

Steve or Ryder OCZ:

BUMP for my question regarding the A8N32sli deluxe and OCZ #OCZ5002048ELGE-K memory. I've hit a wall at 260 HTT with my Opteron 170; vcore 1.4v; vdimm 2.8v; timings as described in my original post about a page up.

260 FSB is about the limit for these sticks, I do not think there is anything that I can suggest that will get you higher.

You can look through the settings in the A8N32 thread here: http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=68

Ryder,

thanks for the quick reply. Do the 2x1gb platinum PC3200 (OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K) go any farther? I've got a set of these lying around. If not, that's fine. I'm new to this overclocking thing and am pretty happy with my OC to 2.6 from 2.0.

Thanks again
