Oregon RB Blount punches Boise State player

Boise, ID (Sports Network) - The football future of Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount is in the balance after he punched a Boise State player at the conclusion of the Ducks' 19-8 loss to the Broncos Thursday night.

In a show of sportsmanship, the teams shook hands before the game, but it turned ugly at the end in the matchup between the 14th-ranked Broncos and No. 16 Ducks.

As both players greeted each other in the middle of the field, Boise State defensive end Byron Hout yelled at Blount and touched him on the shoulder pad before he was nailed in the face with a right-handed punch. Fans then got on Blount's case and he had to be restrained by coaches and security before heading to the locker room.

"I couldn't have envisioned anything worse right here," said Blount after the game. "That will never happen again. I will never lose my head like that again. I apologize. I will never resort to that level. I should have handled that situation a lot better than I did."

This wasn't the first time Blount's faced trouble at Oregon. He was suspended in February by the school for "failure to fulfill team obligations."

Blount, a junior-college transfer, played his first season with the Ducks last year and rushed for 1,002 yards and a single-season school record 17 scores.

He might not get a chance to play again.

I don't see how something innocuous as "what you have to say now" would be grounds for 'had it coming'. Maybe if he had used a racial slur or something.

I think if a football player harbored racist sentiments or made racial slurs a regular part of his vocabulary his own teammates would have done something similar to him by now, either in HS or college.

Hout will not be suspended for the incident, a Boise State spokesman said Friday. Instead, Boise State head coach Chris Petersen will spend time with Hout this week to help him learn from what happened.

I'm surprised by that. I was expecting at least a half game to a whole game suspension.

"Our position is that we have full confidence in the NCAA that they're going to address that. As far as from a criminal standpoint there's nothing that I'm aware of that we're doing," Lt. Bryan Hagler of the Boise Police Department told The Associated Press.

Darn, I was hoping he spent the night in jail.

I think there is some shadow boxing here. The BSU player deserves a light punishment, the OSU player deserves a very harsh punishment.

Talking smack and tapping on the shoulder of a big angry black dude is not a good idea in that situation. He was definitely an instigator, even if it was a stupid move by Blount (which apparently directly after the game he recognized and apologized for). Anyway, one punch doesn't end your college/pro career. He's a top RB...I actually never noticed him before but his 2008 stats are impressive.

On ESPN, they interviewed and NFL scout who said Blount went from being a 2nd-3rd round draft pick to being undrafted.

Blount just destroyed his career in 5 minutes.

One game seems too light, should be a couple imo. There must be precedent already established for punishment for landing a punch after a game, this has happened many times.

An Oregon sports reporter just said on ESPN that Blount admitted he didn't even hear what Hout said to him. He was just upset that he was touched on the shoulder.
