basically, they just opened all the doors at once and it was just crazy, Everyone was pushing and shoving. One even was thrown down the stairs.

did you get one?

Nope. but it was fun. My cousin was there. Man, these people were desperate for one. there were about 5 entrance points into the mall. the people who were at the entrance point on the other side from me actually broke the the door to get in. It was all fun and games until everyone was pushing everyone. They almost pushed my gf down the stairs and they pratically crushed me when running up the stairs. I think it was kind of dumb for the police dept to just open all the doors and have everyone rush in (150 people, 20 consoles for that night, 80 horded for another time). Insanity ensued for a full hour until they decided to finally clear the building.

Wow, glad I was at home playing GoW That's crazy though, I can't imagine myself pushing and fighting for a console... it would be fun to watch everyone else though!
Edit: why were they holding back 80 of them?

I bet everyone is on ebay right now writing up their auction listings and posting their pictures..

I would be pissed too if I had to give up my pre-order just so a scalper could make a fast buck.

I think they just wanted to have stock for the coming weeks. This way, they will always get people to come in the store and look around and ask about it. Lots of places do this. Best Buy did it last year with the 360.

I wonder how many people are coming home after scoring a PS3 and getting burned by Ebay's "You have to have 50+ sales and 98% feedback to sell a PS3" rule Now THAT would be priceless to see heheheheh.

Yeah, they'll get burned, but I bet a lot of people would still find local suckers to buy it.

Yep. Once you have a PS3 in hand, none of those rules apply.

aaah.. here we fvcking go..

1 shot in Conn. Playstation waiting line

PUTNAM, Conn. - Two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people waiting to buy the new Playstation 3 gaming console early Friday and shot one who refused to give up the money, authorities said.

The two confronted 15 to 20 people who were in line outside a Wal-Mart store shortly after 3 a.m. and demanded money, said Lt. J. Paul Vance, a spokesman for the state police. The new Sony consoles are selling for around $500 to $600.

"One of the patrons resisted. That patron was shot," Vance said.

He said the two gunmen fled and the victim was taken to University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. There was no immediate word on the victim's condition.

Vance said police were searching for the suspects, both believed to be in their teens. He said one was wearing a ski mask and brandishing a handgun, and the other had what appeared to be a shotgun.

Short supplies of the PS3 and strong demand led to lines of buyers, some waiting for days, outside stores across the country.

In Palmdale, Calif., authorities shut down a Super Wal-Mart after some shoppers got rowdy late Wednesday. In West Bend, Wis., a 19-year-old man was injured when he ran into a pole racing with 50 others for one of 10 spots outside a Wal-Mart.

In Lexington, Ky., police were investigating a drive-by shooting that hit four people with BB pellets outside a Best Buy store, causing minor injuries, according to WKYT, whose own reporter was hit as she interviewed buyers in line.

A Best Buy in Boston, aware it had only 140 of the consoles, got smart ? its employees gave out tickets to the first 140 people in line so everyone could go home

My mother-in-law has been camped out at a Sam's Club. They opened up at 7AM this morning and had ZERO PS3s! The managers said that the shipment has been delayed by weather and they aren't going to get any until later today or possibly even later. Ouch. They are only getting in a maximum of 3. My mother-in-law is number 2 and 3 in line.

She hasn't been a happy camper. One of the managers was going out there yesterday and trying to discourage people from camping by saying things like they aren't accepting cash for PS3s, they're only accepting business checks, and other crazy crap.

The #1 guy in line is camping out for another guy. The camper is getting 30% of whatever is made off the PS3 up to $4k. Everything over $4k is split 50/50. Whatever.

Link - Playstation Gamer given $7500 PC gaming rig and made to promise that he'll never ever ever play the PS3.

What would it take for you to give up your shot at a PS3? I don't just mean your shot at getting a system on launch day... I mean giving up your right to ever own Sony's newest system? For one gamer waiting outside the Sony Metreon in San Francisco, the price of loyalty was a $7,500 PC gaming rig.

In an effort to "prove that the PC is, and always shall be, the finest gaming platform available to man," PC Gamer and computer maker Falcon Northwest teamed up to lure away prospective PS3 purchasers with a top-of-the-line PC complete with 30" LCD monitor and Nvidia 8800 GTX graphics card. The catch? To get the system, you have to sign a notarized, legally-binding contract certifying that you will never, ever, buy a PS3.

Judging by the photo gallery of the night's events, PC Gamer editor Greg Vederman had no trouble finding willing participants for the offer, but a gamer identified only as "Neal" was the randomly-chosen winner. Vederman said he will be checking in on Neal "several times a year to make sure he keeps his end of the deal," an arrangement we're sure will lead to frantic "quick, hide the PS3" escapades when the PC Gamer van approaches.

Yeah.. but that is only if you are able to buy one. I'm sure when it is first readily available, Walmart, Best Buy, etc. will add games and other stuff and only sell it as a package deal, inflating the costs.

I wonder how long it will be before I can actually walk into a Best Buy or Walmart and get JUST the console, without any added BS that I do not want?

We had 20 units at our wally just units...10 of the 20gb's and 10 of the 60 gb's. All walked out the door in 20 mins...

I wonder what the text of the actual contract states? That "Neal" never "buys" a PS3? Or plays one? If there is no other fine print, well, that's easy to overcome.

I'd have my wife "buy" me the PS3

This just in: The PS3 costs an a$$load to make.

PlayStation 3 costs

The combined materials and manufacturing cost of the PlayStation 3 is $805.85 for the model equipped with a 20Gbyte Hard Disk Drive (HDD), and $840.35 for the 60Gbyte HDD version, according to iSuppli?s Teardown Analysis service?s preliminary estimate of expenses in the fourth quarter. This total doesn?t include additional costs for elements including the controller, cables and packaging.

At these costs, Sony is taking a considerable loss on each PlayStation 3 sold. Materials and manufacturing costs for the 20Gbyte model exceed the suggested retail price of $499 by a total of $306.85, iSuppli?s Teardown Analysis service estimates. For the 60Gbyte version, costs exceed the $599 price by $241.35.

With Sony taking a smaller loss on the higher-end model, it?s not a surprise the company is steering customers to the 60Gbyte version.

A Best Buy in Boston, aware it had only 140 of the consoles, got smart ? its employees gave out tickets to the first 140 people in line so everyone could go home

i swear it wasnt me! I was using a stun gun.
