Am I the only one disgusted by this?

I mean, I hate console gaming in general, but I envision somebody who really wanted to play it having to pay upwards of a grand over retail because people bought and resold them; it's kinda fscked up to me.

It's america, what do you expect? Our country is founded upon capitalism.

I would have rather seen sony auction off the first 30k themselves, and give the extra money over $600 to charity.

You are not alone.but to be honest, i can understand flipping one for 3k profit. 3k is a lot of money. its just sad that people are dumb enough to pay that much for one. but theres nothing you can do really.

Yep, I can't understand how there are so many people that absolutely have to have the thing now... Still pisses me off, though :\.

good. if a lot of auctions get messed up like this, atleast people will stop doing this "buying and selling for profit" thing.

Exactly my thinking. It'd be worth doing it just for the opportunity to piss the seller off, in some cases. Not that it accomplishes anything, of course.

exactly what i was thinking. If more people bid up the auctions to ridiculous amounts and then collectively not paid...everytime the seller tried to sell the ps3, it just might put a stop to this the next time around. but i doubt that will happen

Well, I'm back from camping since Wednesday afternoon and landed (7) 60GB PS3's.
I waited a total of 44 hours! But I had my 2 bro's in line with me and one friend.

My plan was to buy 3 at Circuit City, 2 at Gamestop on Reserve and 2 at EB Games on Reserve.

At 12 PM Wednesday I landed with my crew and camping gear: (2) 4 man Tents, (4) Slumber bags rated for 30 degree weather, (2) Air mattress with memory foam, tent heaters, portable dvd player, Creative Zen Vision M MP3 Player, Laptops, Blankets, Ice Chest, small table, extension cords, power strip and some other protection stuff like knives.... for the Rotessiere chicken of course

Wednesday:
We camped at 12 at CC, and were numbers 1 - 3 out of 6 being given out. My other buddy keeping one for himself bought one.
First night was relatively cool with some gusty winds. Killed time browsing the web, since CC had an open Wi-Fi connection along with some other homes across the street broadcasting a signal.
Slept like a baby in my warm tent watching movies and "the office"

Thursday:
In the morning I left to go home about 15 minutes away to take a shower, shave and eat a nice warm fresh breakfast. Put on some fresh clothes and head back to the camp site. No clouds and temps were in the upper 60's. During the afternoon I posted some ads in Craigslist and recieved a couple phone calls. Later that night I left again around 11PM to pickup my fiancee because we had 2 pre-orders and were #1 and #2 at Gamestop. We got to Gamestop around 12AM Friday (Thursday Night) because the manager was doing a midnight launch. I picked up 2 more there and took off to drop off my first sale for $1800 cash! We met at a Walmart (lol) inside a Mcdonalds. Called him when I got to Walmart and concealed the stupid PS3 inside a bag and put it into a push basket. lol, felt like a drug deal going down. 2 guys showed up... said this was their 5th PS3 that their boss had bought. Boss was gonna give them away as an incentive promotion for his employees and gifts. Boss was apparently loaded, since he sent he workers to pick them up. Got my cash and went our seperate ways. Went back to Circuit City and chilled until the manager came out around 5AM and gave us vouchers so we could leave and come back to pick them up later.

Friday:
Friday Morning (6AM) went to eat at Denny's. Then went back to Circuit City for the 8AM Launch. Picked up 3 more for $610 EACH after tax! I had a coupon from Fat Wallet "$40 off any $199 purchase or more" I asked the manager if we could use these and she said "Sure, why not!" WOOT!!! Walked out of CC with 3 PS3's and received about 8 phone calls and some guy wanted 2 for Xmas gifts. Met him at a bank where he pulled up in an BMW M5 with his 2 kids. Sold 2 more to him for $3000 together! Second transaction completed smoothly. 3 PS3's down, 4 to go...... got some more phone calls and someone wanted 2 PS3's. Told them to meet me at my office at 10:30 AM were we have security and cameras. Guy showed up and sold 2 more as a bundle for $3400! Third transaction completed smoothly. 5 PS3's down 2 to go.
11AM recieved 2 phones calls.... I told them $1700 first come first serve. A guy and girl show up and fork over $3400 for both systems. Final transaction completed! (7) PS3's all sold within an 8 hour time frame.

Total Revenue: $11,600
My Investment: $4430
Profit: $7170

Not bad for 44 hours of waiting which I took 1 and 1/2 vacation days for. Overall the 44 hours I spent came out to a profit of $162.95 per hour of my time.
Thats a 381% Return On Investment in a 48 hour period. Only other thing I can think of that makes those kind of ROI's are drugs!

This money is going towards Xmas gifts, Savings for a new home and my final year of college tuition.

Honestly, I think you could have hauled in more on Ebay. As Christmas gets closer I think they will all be going for $2500+ each. But I guess when you have 7, selling them for 'only' $1500-1700 still makes a nice chunk of change.

I may have been able too, but I had the Walmart mentality..... sell in VOLUME!
Also, I just didn't want to risk the market getting oversaturated with PS3's and than still selling for an average of $1500. That would have lowered my profits due to a few things:

1) Packaging Material
2) Ebay fee's
3) Paypal fee's
4) Shipping fee's
5) More time and effort to take pictures, post on ebay, drive to the post office, make labels, etc...
6) Deadbeat bidders killing your auctions cause they are jealous or angry

I considered that and just didn't think it was worth the hassle or the time. But I did seriously contemplate it.

They're going for about $2000 on average now, plus or minus 250 or so. I'm betting that prices peak somewhere around the week after thanksgiving, or maybe a week before christmas.
I'm selling one I got off costco.com, I think I'll donate some to charity, has anyone done that through ebay before?

Excellent points -- sounds like you did your homework and Craigslist was the way to go.

Yeah, that's understandable. A $7k haul is nothing to sneeze at a lot more than most people that only land 1 system are going to profit.

I think there are more PS3s on ebay than being played in people's homes right now. The ridiculousness of it all is astounding. There aren't any games worth $600 right now, let alone $2k. People being shot and robbed? Jesus christ.
