ayup. always meet at a bank during daylight hours. this way you can have the cash verified as not counterfeit, and the whole transaction takes place on camera.

Much as I hate the PS3, all the "problems" with it - there's always first run errors/defective units. There's never going to be 100% quality control on a unit as complex as that, muchless something as simple as a (insert simple electronic gadget here).

But I look forward to MS stomping the hell out of Sony this round. I love my 360.

now you have to remember that this is a PC forum and we are PC guys. i mean we have been playing games that looks as good as 360/ps3 games for over a year now, so excuses me for not being overly pumped about the ps3.
i probably will get one one day, just call me when GT4 and metal gear come out...

no one on here is pumped up about the PS3 because it's an overhyped, overpriced, piece of crap bluray player. that's why.

many MANY people on here are excited about the other consoles (Xbox360 and Wii), regardless of this being a PC forum.

the main reason ANYONE at ALL in this country was excited about the PS3 launch was because people thought it would be an easy way to make some quick cash as they saw plenty of people do with the Xbox360.

Generalize much?

care to elaborte much?

So nobody AT ALL bought it for the actual system?

i own one.

Actually it sold for $1250; read the auction. The seller just circumvented eBay's fees.

LOL

so the buyer just called the guy before they bid on it? and then arranged the deal, and did a small bid?

So in exchange for giving up your PS3, you have to pay $3000-4000 in taxes AND endure a lifetime of the 'rhea?

Penny Arcade gets rough with Sony

It was good news there for a little while, when PS1 games were five bucks a pop and you were changin' out that hard drive and still retaining your warranty - big, generous moves that asked hard questions of their primary competitor. Just days later, it's weird rumor after dark rumbling after grim report.

The cruelest speculation is that the launch figure is something like half of what was promised - 150,000 to 200,000 units, says one analyst. I am not an analyst, but when I scour the launch list for a reason to wait outside for days in a ****** line, no klaxons sound and no lights begin to blink or flash. Motorstorm and Lair - the games that really sold people the system at this year's Tokyo Game Show - are nowhere to be seen. There are, of course, those distant ultrabrands - the ones that start with Metal and Final - but buying a system at today's prices, under today's conditions is on that basis is... unwise. Unwise is the diplomatic word I have chosen.

The launch is full of... Well, Launch Titles. It sounds like Insomniac did what Insomniac does - deliver spit-polished hits. Past that, you've got Genji (rank), Untold Legends (just... no) and Gundam (daemonic). Everything else is something that

(a) already came out, and

(b) most likely runs better or has more features on existing equipment. Seriously, read the reviews.

This is beyond insulting. This is beyond ridiculous. It is farcical.

With the Playstation 2, we ascribed the spotty launch supply to monstrous intent. We were young men, though, and young men often feel the weight of unaccountable oppressors bearing down on them. Speaking today, it seems clear to me that Sony would not want to launch under these conditions if they had any choice in the matter. Not with this anemic supply, now reaped by speculators. Not with these titles. But they have done it, singing all the while, making a stupid pageant of the whole affair with their petty sniping. Well, you have not succeeded, not at anything laudable. You've kept young people in out in the elements for days through your ineptitude, this is true, but that is worth negapoints - a reverse scoring method exclusively for jackasses that starts at zero, and actually goes down from there.

Yikes...this isn't looking good for the PS3...at least for a while. It seems like a lot of people are really giving it a hard time for not being "finished". The NY Times article is particularily damning as it is aimed at the regular consumer in a very high profile news paper. They definitely give the 360 the recommendation.

Not to mention this article from a bit more technical standpoint (although he really does nothing to back up his claims other than tout his experience):

I hope Sony gets their act together quickly.

Bloomberg: Only 400k PS3s by the end of the year.

Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp. may have missed its goal of having 400,000 PlayStation 3 consoles in U.S. stores for the video-game player's Nov. 17 debut, analysts said.

The number of machines available was ``even lower than expected,'' Kaufman Bros. Equity Research analyst Todd Mitchell said today in a research note. Analysts including Michael Savner at Banc of America Securities and Anthony Gikas at Piper Jaffray & Co. also predicted a shortfall.

Limited supplies haven't satisfied demand for PlayStation 3, leading some customers who obtained consoles to sell them on the Internet at markups of several times to their retail price. Parts shortages forced Sony to reduce its year-end goal for worldwide shipments of the new console by half, to 2 million, in September.

``We shipped as many PlayStation 3 units into the North American market as possible and continue our efforts in supplying systems to retailers nationwide through the holidays,'' Sony spokeswoman Kimberly Otzman said today in an e-mail.

The company is airlifting in shipments weekly, and aims to have 1 million units in U.S. stores by the end of the year, Otzman said. She didn't say how many shipments were on hand for the launch.

American depositary receipts of Tokyo-based Sony fell 67 cents to $40.12 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Each ADR is worth one ordinary share. They have declined 1.7 percent this year.

Tokyo-based Sony has struggled to assemble the consoles due to a shortage of a laser used in its Blu-ray DVD player.

Short supplies of the consoles led customers to line up for days outside stores across the U.S. Some people who purchased the $499 and $599 machines sold them on Web sites such as Ebay.com for as much as $5,000.

Lines, Markups

More than half the 150 stores checked by Kaufman Bros. said they wouldn't have enough units to cover preorders, according to a Nov. 16 research note by retail analyst SooAnn Roberts. She predicts Sony will ship no more than 200,000 units to the U.S. this year.

Savner said in a Nov. 7 report that Sony would miss its target. Gikas said in a Nov. 16 note that he expected 200,000 PlayStation 3s available at the U.S. launch and 400,000 by year- end.

Toys ``R'' Us Inc., the second-largest U.S. toy seller, expects more PlayStation 3 machines to arrive next week, spokeswoman Kathleen Waugh said in an interview. She said the company received enough PlayStation 3s at launch to cover preorders.

``They gave us allocations for the holiday season last week,'' Waugh said. ``We wish we could have gotten more.''

Nintendo Co.'s Wii, which was introduced in the U.S. on Nov. 19, ``is doing phenomenally,'' Waugh said. The Wayne, New Jersey-based company's Times Square store sold more than 2,000 units in a few hours, she said.

Wii is sold out in some stores, although the company expects to be ``in great stock through the holiday season,'' Waugh said. The Wii appeals to Toys ``R'' Us core customers of families and children, she said.

Customers who want a PlayStation 3 will probably wait and buy more games for their PlayStation 2, Mitchell said in an interview.

``If there is a substitution, it would be more for the Xbox 360,'' Mitchell said. ``Demand for PS3 is from hard-core gamers, who wouldn't opt for a Wii. It's not an alternative to PS3.''

I'm really starting to get the impression that other than a few fanboys, no one really cares that much about the PS3. Sure it will eventually be bought by people once the price comes down and some good games come out...but overall, most are disappointed. I'm sure a few people at Sony are sweating bullets...

pretty much disenchanted with it right now. Especially considering how many exclusive rights they have lost. So considering I finally got a Xbox360 right now I find no reason to get a PS3 for the games since I can get GTA and Assassains Creed on Xbox360

I am no Sony fanboy and I would like to play with one. I think that a lot of the problem with the lack of reviews is that the people who actually want to play the PS3 A) aren't going to camp for three days to get one and B) aren't going to pay some scalper's price to get one.

I will wait until they are readily available and then play it. If I get lucky and find one during the holiday season, that's fine. If I don't, that's fine to.

Sony begrudgingly promises fix for PS3 720p output issues

Apparently Sony's kicking off an early Thanksgiving break tomorrow, as they seem to be exhausting themselves today in preparation. After breaking the news that PSP Spots are US bound, floating the PSP 3.0 firmware out, and probably dealing with that massive invoice they just received from Thomas Menino and friends, the company is issuing a quasi-promise that the 1080i / 720p output problems plaguing some distraught PS3 owners will be fixed. Interestingly enough, Sony places a slightly unbelievable amount of blame on "antiquated HDTVs," as if having an HDTV that supports 720p is some sort of hidden requirement to operate a PlayStation 3. While we fully understand that most HDTV sets purchased today will indeed play nice with 720p signals, where's the love for folks who snagged those first generations sets produced by yours truly? According to Sony, a fix is on the way, but it doesn't sound like you'll be getting served with a smile.

My younger brother and I went to the Indiana state youth convention. They had a drawing for a 60gb PS3. My brother won. We share a room.

They didn't have it yet...they'll send it to us when they get it. Or, if we find one, we call them and they come buy it for us.

Yay

Why do you assume the prize will be taxed? As long as the prize terms state that it has no cash value (i.e. cannot be exchanged for cash, etc.) then you will not have to pay tax (except what you paid for your PS3). Actually, TB should give you a receipt so you have another $600 in charitable donations to claim.

You know, statements like this one are part of the reason I refuse to buy the PS3. Sony has become so arrogant it is ridiculous.

1.
The restaurant did warn that whoever receives the Bucks is responsible for payment of any taxes that would be incurred.

2. I dont' think it matters that it "cannot be exchanged for cash," it does have a very clear cash value - $12,500. If you win a car, you have to pay taxes on the value of the car even if you can't take a cash option instead. Remember when Oprah gave away a bunch of cars but people had to sell them because they couldn't afford the taxes? Oprah paid the sales tax on the car only.

3. You're not donating it to charity, Taco Bell is. You can't deduct it as a charitable contribution if you receive in return something valued at 20 times what you donated.
