What exclusives have they lost? Not disagreeing with you, just wondering because I hadn't heard and that's good news to me since it'll be a while before I buy a PS3.

Grand Theft Auto and Assassin's Creed are the first that come to mind.

More about how Sony lost exclusives here.

More about how Sony lost exclusives here.

From the most recent EGM (this is in the rumors section so take it with a grain of salt):

"Fanboys always have their favorites, and most Sony lovers are proud to brag about the PS3 snagging the exclusive rights to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Unless it comes out on the 360, that is. Yes, as crazy as it may sound, I hear Konami is forcing the game's head honcho, Hideo Kojima, to port Metal Gear Solid 4 over to the 360."

From the same page:

"Apparently, Assassin's Creed was never meant to be a PS3 exclusive. Yep, I hear Sony asked publisher Ubisoft to keep the 360 version a secret as a special favor."

Both are believable imho. What's the point of exclusivity anymore unless a system is unique (Wii)?

Gamestop resupplied on PS3s (and Wii) for Black Friday

One of the biggest hitches with Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch last year was a dearth of follow-up shipments that left the console maker unable to make its next-gen system readily available to consumers until months after launch.

Sony and Nintendo might manage to avoid that problem, as GameStop today indicated that last weekend's launches of the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii sold out, but more units are on the way. In an investor conference call tied to the retailer's third-quarter earnings report, GameStop executives confirmed that they have already been resupplied with both systems, and they expect to get more of each on a weekly basis.

The executives also recapped the launch performances of the two systems. For the PS3, Sony's Resistance: Fall of Man and Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 07 were the biggest sellers, while Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Ubisoft's Red Steel stood out from the pack of Wii launch titles.

However, game sales were stronger on the Wii, with GameStop sporting a tie ratio of 3 games sold for every system, compared to the PS3's tie ratio of 1.5 games for each system. The shortfall on Sony's system was attributed to more people picking up the system on its own to turn around and sell it for a premium. As those systems find their ways into the hands of "real gamers," the execs said the PS3 tie ratio should increase.

GameStop's higher-ups noted that their chain historically has the highest tie ratio of any retailer in the country but estimated that they were still shorted on hardware allocation by both Sony and Nintendo. While GameStop and its EB Games brand collectively account for about 25 percent of the US gaming market, the company believes it didn't receive that much of either system's day-one shipments. Executives said that they've never been satisfied with their launch-day allocation of any new machine, but added their main concern now is the flow of follow-up shipments--which both Sony and Nintendo have promised will come at a steady pace.

More
Sony Computer Entertainment of America's Dave Karraker confirms that a new shipment of Playstation 3s has landed and will be available at stores by Black Friday.

No word on how many of the Playstation 3s, airlifted to the U.S., was in the shipment, but Karraker says that the company is shipping them on a weekly basis and that they are shooting for 1 million consoles in stores in the U.S. by the end of the year.

Sony begrudgingly promises fix for PS3 720p output issues

Apparently Sony's kicking off an early Thanksgiving break tomorrow, as they seem to be exhausting themselves today in preparation. After breaking the news that PSP Spots are US bound, floating the PSP 3.0 firmware out, and probably dealing with that massive invoice they just received from Thomas Menino and friends, the company is issuing a quasi-promise that the 1080i / 720p output problems plaguing some distraught PS3 owners will be fixed. Interestingly enough, Sony places a slightly unbelievable amount of blame on "antiquated HDTVs," as if having an HDTV that supports 720p is some sort of hidden requirement to operate a PlayStation 3. While we fully understand that most HDTV sets purchased today will indeed play nice with 720p signals, where's the love for folks who snagged those first generations sets produced by yours truly? According to Sony, a fix is on the way, but it doesn't sound like you'll be getting served with a smile.

You know, statements like this one are part of the reason I refuse to buy the PS3. Sony has become so arrogant it is ridiculous.

My "antiquated" HDTV is still better than 95%+ of the TVs out there.

I should have posted this earlier, but oh well. The Best Buy in Austin at Mopac had a stack of 10-15 or so on the floor and many people (probably another 10-15) walking around with one around 11:30 this morning. Just walk up past the 3 shrimps guarding them and get one.

The one in Georgetown had 2 60's and 4 20's at 2:40 this afternoon

The Walmart also had 4, but we had missed them by 5 minutes.

does anyone have any experience with the Online features w/ the PS3? Does it at all compare to the Xbox Live, or is it still like the old PS2 ?

I've seen a few articles that mention Live > anything PS3 has. The Played podcast (one of them visits these forums) mentions that the only reason to buy a PS3 right now is for the exclusives. If you're going to buy something like CoD3 you might as well get it on the 360 for Live.

I got a 20Gb yesterday. I just walked in to EB, the guy just got a shipment of 4 units, 2 60Gbs+ 2 20Gbs. He called 4 people on reserve list and 1 guy said he'd rather wait for a 60Gb so he gave it to me on the spot.

Suprisingly mine came with Talledega Nights even though it just came in on the truck yesterday.

Pretty much. So far it sounds like only Resistance is providing a somewhat satisfying online experience and that's because they've got the full support of Sony and are using Sony servers to host the game. The others were left to the developers and are half-baked or non-existant.

Give it time.

The PS3 is pretty impressive. It amazes what an open ended piece of hardware it is. The 60Gb model is overpriced because they all support USB devices like flashdrives and even gives instructions in the manual how to swap out the harddrive. I will be putting a larger one in there, probably a 120Gb 5400rpm model.

Thats not surprising because the first 500K shipments will include talladega nights, they've only shipped around 200K so far..

Someone posted a picture of one with a 3.5" hard drive hooked up to it. Obviously it wouldn't fit in the case, but IF there is enough content to fill a large drive I would not be averse to having an external hard drive hooked up to it.
