The claims on the 22GB have been proven false. Just read the comments section of the Joystiq article
102. Hey Joystiq, for research (you know, that thing that *real* news sites and *real* reporters do), Ted Price commented on his blog that when Resistance went gold, they got it down to about 16gigs. http://blogs.ign.com/Ted-Insomniac/
"As we moved into the final week of finishing up the game we made two big changes which dropped the size of the final disc to just over 16Gb ? still pretty large nonetheless. What were the changes? We removed PAL movies and further improved our data compression."
Secondly, the Resistance numbers now make sense:
Padding = 1.9GB (Padding file size = 32MB)
FMV = 7GB
Audio = 2.24GB
Game = 6.12GB

You do realize Sony's movie unit was busted for making up reviews (and reviewers) giving their films high scores. What makes you think the rest of the company is any different?
LOL. Movies are filmed in several different aspect ratios. You're always going to have letterboxing with some films.Originally posted by: BillyBatson
This issue is really annoying me.
I have a Pioneer 42" HD Plasma tv. My friend has a Panasonic 42" HD Plasma tv. I own about 200 DVD's and he owns about 500. Certain movies will play in full 16:9 and fit our screens perfectly. Others even though they claim to be 16:9 are still letterboxed on both of our sets (though smaller than if viewed on a 4:3 tv).
I purchased an HDMI Upconversion dvd player which didn't make any difference when it came to fitting the screen even when i chose 720p or 1080i output so i took it back.
Last night we opened my friends PS3, connected it to his Pany and fired her up. We had 4 Bluray movies on hand, T2 Judgement Day, House Of Flying Daggers, Full Metal Jacket, and Taladega Nights. EACH of these movies were letterboxed and did not fit the screen perfectly no matter what resolution we tried to output out of the HDMI output. We popped in a standard DVD that we know never fit the screen and same thing.
What is the problem? We want our 16:9 movies to fit our screens perfectly! The BD movies looked great but they would have looked better if they fit the screen!
any help as to fix this, a way around this, or an explanation to why it does this? PS3+Bluray shoul have fixed this problem! we opened the ps3 for nothing

If you have 700 DVDs between the two of you, you guys didn't know by now that some movies are anamorphic and will never fit a 16:9 widescreen fully? I think there are anamorphic tvs but they are rare and probably expensive. IMHO, it's not a big deal. But you can probably sell that PS3 for no loss if you hurry.

well i already knew but for the most part i want my dvd's on my 4:3 flat glass crt tv so i am used to the letterbox effect. My plasma is in the living room which i hardly go to but like i said i had had the prob before but not with every movie, we assumed (or should i say prayed) that HD movies would somehow find a compomise or just change everything to 16:9 but nopes
yeah he is thinking about boxing it and selling it since we wanted to test it out for movies and not gaming. I was going to open mine if i liked the results but i am just going to sell mine and buy an xbox with an hd-dvd drive (cuz i want hd-dvd to win over BD) or just a set top hddvd player

Its because the 360 launched in November 2005 (A year ago...), and the PS3 launched in November 2006 (A year after 360...). How does that not make sense?

yes, but the 360 thread has always stayed very busy...especially when it was a sticky. The fact that the same thread continues to stay busy...and this thread which is still young is barely busy at all is just interesting. I wonder if it has to do with few people on here who actually bought one to play...most of the ATOT users probably bought one to sell if they bought one at all.
