I guess I'm the opposite. I hate clutter and sell all my games if I'm not playing them again. Only exception is I keep the steelbooks for all the games I buy in the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series because the artwork is incredible on them, but I still sell the game discs since they have no use to me on the shelf. Plus if I ever want to replay them those games are $5 all the time on Steam.

Ah, I'd say 90% of the games I've played, I'd be willing to sell, give away, or donate. It's only the few ones I value where I prefer having a hard copy, just as with my favorite books.

Sure, you have more reliance on day 1 updates on consoles but at least in theory you still own your console games. The only games I actually own on PC are the DRM free ones that I can download the installers for.
Even then I still wouldn't consider GOG games as something I own since I can't legally sell the game to someone else when I'm done with it.

Well, without the optical drive for me there is no real reason to buy a console besides exclusives. Given what has happened in the last 8-10 years on that issue makes me even less interested in consoles. Both Spiderman and Last of Us1 hit PC eventually along with HorizonZeroDawn. At least I've used my PS4 somewhat over 7 years. The xbone1 was a total waste (Master Chief Collection hit PC a couple years later) with the Wii U being almost as bad.

Same here. For me it's not a big deal to shell out the $80 when I'm also the one that gets the latest and greatest Nvidia GPU that comes out. I like having both options this way and I use my PC a lot for flight sims in VR so the extra horsepower is justified. It will be a few years until devs make use of all the potential of the pro.

Not for me. I used the Xbox One, then Xbox One S and finally Xbox One X. Got absolutely addicted to Forza Horizon 3 and using Xbox as a media center device. Getting the Xbox One X turned me off coz I didn't feel it being any faster despite the superior specs so skipped the Xbox Series consoles and went with PS5. Don't think I'll be getting an Xbox any time soon.

RE: Xbox vs PS

I just assumed hardcore PC gamers like myself would go with the PS because of exclusives and Xbox games were available on Gamepass rendering their console redundant. There's just a lot more synergy with the PS for those PC gamers who enjoy the console experience & some of Sony's exclusives, which I do.

The great thing about Gamepass is allowing gamers to try things out. What I've found is that most games just aren't very good and aren't worth buying, and for those Gamepass games I find worthwhile (Lies of P), I'll just buy a copy of to retain when I cancel Gamepass.

PS - Also, seems like the really great games aren't going to be on Gamepass, e.g., Elden Ring, Wukong, etc.

Game Pass is going to die. They have already gotten to the ensh*tification stage by tiering it and jacking up the price of the good tier to $20 a month before they ever got widespread adoption. Can't do that while you're supposed to be in growth, you're supposed to make the service worse after you have already gotten everyone used to using it like Netflix and Google search did.

My PS3 gave up the ghost recently so I'm considering buying a PS5/Pro in large part just to have a Blu-Ray player, but also to have something for GTA 6.

What are some recommendations for PS5 games or even PS4 games that have backwards compatibility that I should consider getting? I'm mainly looking for console exclusives as I have a gaming PC so anything that plays better with keyboard/mouse I would just pick up on Steam.

Gran Turismo series (5, 6, Sport and 7, VR)

PS4 Last of Us Remastered (haven't played the PS5 remake but that's available on PC)

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

There are so shockingly few PS5 exclusive games. Here is the Wikipedia list on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:PlayStation_5-only_games

Keep in mind that

Demons Souls (technically this isn't PS5 exclusive, lol)
TLOU 2
Spider-Man 2
Death Stranding 2

Will likely be released on PC at some point.

Bloodborne is top notch and will seemingly never come to PC no matter how much gamers portbeg. It's a PS4 game stuck at 1080p30 with piss poor frame pacing but is tied with Elden Ring for my game of the century. Just awesome level design, atmosphere, and some truly epic bossfights, though you must get the The Old Hunters DLC since the three best bossfights in the game are in it.

Demon's Souls Remake is outstanding. Not as great as Bloodborne but it's far superior graphically and runs better too. Bossfights aren't as good as the rest of the Soulsborne games but the level design is top notch.

Most of the great PS4 and PS5 exclusives have either come to PC, have officially announced PC ports, or are no-brainers to get PC ports. Eg for former exclusives that have already been ported to PC consider games like Persona 5 Royal, Yakuza 0, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part I, God of War 2018, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Spiderman, Spiderman Miles Morales, and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. For games announced but not yet out on PC consider God of War Ragnarok and Final Fantasy XVI. And then games like The Last of Us Part II and Spiderman 2 that will unquestionably get PC ports but haven't been officially announced AFAIK. Though none of them are mouse & keyboard games IMO. The real benefit to having the console if you like Playstation franchises is to play them at launch instead of waiting 2-3 years for PC ports.

Definitely makes me think my PS5 will be the last PlayStation I ever buy. Even with the lackluster exclusives lineup I still think it was a great purchase since it was really strong hardware for the time at only $500 in early 2021 when I got it, but as PS5 Pro shows the days of Playstation putting out a loss leader console are almost certainly over. Hell, as PS5 Slim shows where the digital edition went up $50 in price vs what the PS5 digital was initially sold at.

By the way, been watching some youtube content creators' reactions to the pricing, and it is comedic gold! Not sure if they're being melodramatic for clicks (if so, it's working!), but this is some of the funniest stuff I've seen in quite some time.

You know what we need? An AI generated Friends episode where everyone just dishes it out to Sony for their stupid pricing and decision.

  1. "Hey Sony, I heard you wanted to price the PS5 Pro like a luxury car. Did you include the heated seats too or just the price tag?"
  2. "The PS5 Pro is just like those fancy coffee shops: pay extra for the ‘pro’ version and still get a latte art of disappointment."
  3. "Sony’s PS5 Pro: the only console where you can spend $700 to feel like you’re still getting ripped off. At least the box will look nice!"
  4. "You know, if Sony keeps this up, we’ll need a ‘GoFundMe’ for our gaming habits and a ‘PayPal’ loan for a disc drive."
  5. "For $700, I expect the PS5 Pro to come pre-installed with a personal gamer assistant, and my snacks delivered!"
  6. "Sony said the PS5 Pro is built for serious gamers. At that price, I guess they mean serious about going broke."
  7. "Why does the PS5 Pro come with a vertical stand? So you can display your financial poor choices in style!"
  8. "The PS5 Pro: because who doesn’t want to feel like they just bought a ticket to a gaming black hole of debt?"
  9. "Sony must think all gamers are millionaires. I mean, I can barely afford my Cheetos on this budget!"
  10. "Those price tags are just Sony's way of saying, ‘We believe in you… to make really bad financial decisions!’"
  11. "Is the PS5 Pro made of gold? Because out of the box, it better come with a job placement service!"
  12. "I’d say the PS5 Pro is revolutionary, but I don’t think it’ll revolutionize my bank account anytime soon."
  13. "At this rate, the PS5 Pro should just come with a ‘financial therapy’ session included."
  14. "Wow, a PS5 Pro for only $700? I can’t believe they’re practically giving it away… if you ignore the extra fees!"
  15. "Sony’s pricing strategy for the PS5 Pro is so high, even Elon Musk is like, ‘Dude, chill out!’”

PSN direct in US still has the optical drive available for anyone planning to get a pro. I tried to order but I'm out of the country currently so I'll try with a VPN or later when I get home.

I see some of them already on ebay for $120 and up.

Well, I'm assuming all this chatter we're seeing on the net is just the vocal minority, and most gamers just don't follow what's going on any sort of granular level? I'm guilty of this when not actively gaming or engrossed in a single game, where I just won't keep track or bother to read anything game related. Well, for Sony's sake, I certainly hope the almost universal consensus on their pricing isn't indicative of general gaming consumers.

Nah, they really screwed themselves over this time. The dislikes on their Youtube video are indicative of gamers' ire. The $699 price would've been palatable with a disc drive and stand. Without them, they are pretending like they are Apple which is a pretty bad look among the general population because LOTS of people avoid Apple due to their bad pricing tactics. And that 2TB SSD, I'm not even sure if it's TLC NAND based. It could be bottom of the barrel QLC designed to last a year or less and then Sony says, sorry, you played too much! Pay $150 for repairs! That's doubly problematic because the OS resides on the internal SSD. Not even sure if it is possible for a user to replace that themselves and get the OS back up and running.

$700 (really $800+) and their other market equivalents do not look good. Not with Steam Deck and other similar mobile PC systems out there now. Toss in Nintendo options and cheap PC parts available (sans gpu) and it is not inspiring.

Regardless of the actual price, the PS5 Pro was always going to be a small percentage of PS5 sales. The PS4 Pro was only 10-15% of sales I think and that was $399 (versus the base model being $299).

It's meant to be the premium option for people who absolutely hate 30 fps.

And they couldn't have chosen the worst time to do it. PS5 doesn't even have a large catalog of system selling exclusives.

If PS5 Pro fails to gain traction as a console, what does Sony do with all the SoCs they made the deal with AMD for? Probably gonna have to sell those as a PC or something, with SteamOS or Windows and in both cases, they are going to need to pay AMD to write the compatible Vulkan/DirectX drivers for the GPU. Would be such fun if it happens!

They just need to cut prices to the point where consumers will buy consoles. I'm assuming that with the $700 price they're making money on each console. Outside of the new SoC with more GPU cores, the overall design hasn't changed much. Faster memory, but no more than previously. Larger SSD, but otherwise nothing special.

It would be rather funny if they did intend on a lower price until Concord flopped so hard. Selling just 2 million Pro consoles at $100 more than announced would cover the losses from that game. I suspect another reason for the higher price is that it allows them to keep prices for the regular PS5 the same. If they priced them any closer, who would buy a PS5 for $500?
