So does the "free PS5 upgrade" turn it into the same PS5 version you would have purchased if it was the PS5 physical disc? Or does it give you a "PS5 enhanced" version that just upscales the PS4 version of the game?
From my understanding, the only difference between the PS5 digital version and the PS5 upgrade digital version is that the latter has a disc check that looks for the PS4 disc. Apart from that, it's the same as the PS5 game.
Also people have reported putting PS5 discs in PS4 and them getting stuck. So you may not want to do that again lol.
Oh, no... I didn't try it. I looked it up because I was curious if the reverse was possible. I believe the PS5 can support larger capacity discs, but it's not like all games will use them. I was trying to find out if there was
any reason to buy a PS5 version over a PS4 version that includes a free PS5 upgrade. The latter gives me far more flexibility as I can take my disc and go play it on my PS4 Pro as well. The only thing that I'm not sure about is whether saves work across what are technically different games.
On the other hand, I'm pretty sure there is no issue if I waned to put Assassin's Creed Valhalla or Yakuza: Like a Dragon in my Xbox One X or Xbox Series X. Microsoft's Smart Delivery treats the Series X upgrade as more of a DLC, which means the base game is still the same.
Apparently you have to go in and filter it from ps4 to ps5 and then select the appropriate content. It really is a mess that needs to be cleaned up.
There's a round "..." button by the game title. You have to click on that, and go to Game Version in the pop-up menu to switch between PS4 and PS5. Although, as I mentioned, Sackboy had PS5 selected by default, but I wonder if that's due to the install order. I copied the PS4 version and updated it before I realized that I had to specifically acquire the PS5 version. So, it downloaded and installed last.
... people stupidity stopped surprising me some time ago... why would anyone 'try' this?
I am sure they would also blame 'manufacturer's defect' out of this
I was tempted to try it, but given that I didn't trust it... I decided to look it up first. Theoretically, as long as the game disc isn't a higher capacity disc, there's no reason the PS4 couldn't read it. I'm guessing that even if the PS4 can physically read the disc, the PS5 likely has a different disc format/structure, and the PS4 doesn't understand it.
Oh, and frankly, I would argue that it's a bug that the PS4 would continuously attempt to read an unreadable disc. It's a really bad UX decision.
I don't know if this is limited only to the call of duty cold war game, but that's where all the reports come from. I wonder if it happens to other titles too.
When I was in Target picking up Sackboy, I was looking at some of the third-party titles to look for upgrade notices and prices. The Call of Duty packaging for Xbox is rather confusing. There are two completely separate packages, one for Xbox One, and one for Xbox Series S/X. It's a bit confusing, because the Xbox One's packaging looks no different than on a game like Yakuza, but to get the Series S/X version, you
have to buy the other one (that's $10 more). The difference on the box is that it lists the two console generations in a different order, and I believe the Series S/X one notes that it comes with both versions.
On the flip side, the PS4 version just lists that it has a PS5 upgrade and is the lower, $60 price. PlayStation Perks!
