Valve added support for Sony's new DualSense Wireless Controller to the Steam Input API so you can use it to play Steam games

If you're one of the lucky ten people in your neighbourhood actually to score a PlayStation 5, you can now use your controller to play PC games through Steam. The latest Steam client update added full support for Sony's fancy new controller.

Valve just rolled out a new update for Steam, which includes further controller support in the Steam Input API. Specifically, Valve added support for Sony's new DualSense wireless controller, including features such as the LED lights, the trackpad, the rumble system, and the gyro input. Best of all, developers don't have to do anything. Valve said the controller "just works."

Sony's DualSense controller won't work will all games, but it will work with a large portion of them. Basically, any game that supports the Steam Input API will get automatic support for the new controller.

If you're wondering why Valve would take the time to add support for Sony's new controller, it's because there's actually a huge player base that uses a controller on Steam. Valve said that in the last two years, the number of gamepad users on its platform has doubled. According to Valve's data, as much as 60% of Steam gamers have gamepads, and for some games, it can be as high as 90% of the player base

This is good news. My ~12 year old? X360 controller feels like it is about to abandon the ghost, so if I pick up that PS5 next season, I hopefully won't have to think about replacing my PC gamepad.

I've gotten comfortable switching back and forth from keyboard to games that just work better with a gamepad. No shame.

I also can't understand why anyone would want to play games like AC series, the Batman games--basically, action games with tons of movement and multiple combo requirements--on a keyboard. It's doable, but just seems masochistic to me.

I agree. I play a lot of games similar to Devil May Cry 5. Imagine playing that with a keyboard ?

I don't know if it was oen of the Just Cause games, or maybe some version of GTA that I tried on PC, but at some point, I realized that driving mechanics in those games--which always includes shooting and, especially flying, were just impossible with kb/m. I tried to do a hybrid thing where I would switch to gamepad when getting in vehicles, but that was too much to deal with.

I told myself that kb/m was important because of all the pew pew, but with 3rd person games like that, kb/m doesn't really add any greater accuracy, especially if you have all of the aim assist. Also, I don't care about aim assist. crucify me!

That's funny. This is literally why I bought a second controller for my xbox one X...so I could have it to connect to my pc for those games that are better off with a controller.

Good to hear that it will be plug and play for most titles. I had to use some third party software to get the ps4 dual shock to work properly with some pc titles.

As a kid I played racing games with the arrow keys on a kb, but mostly because my parents didn't love me.

That reminds me of when I was in a local computer store with a friend, and they had a racing game playing on a computer... but with no gamepad. He just couldn't play the game, but was in shock when I played it without any issue on the keyboard. Given how finicky gamepads were back in the day, I never used them on PC.. or rather, didn't have one to use for a long time. So, when playing games like DIRT or Need for Speed Underground, I'd just use a keyboard.

Good to hear that it will be plug and play for most titles. I had to use some third party software to get the ps4 dual shock to work properly with some pc titles.

It's only through Steam though. You'll still need DS4Windows for anything else, and I have heard that they're working on support too.

Indeed. For the last 5 years or so, the only games I use keyboard and mouse for is shooters. Everything else, console only.

When I would play a PC game....that I would usually play on a console, I would use a Xbox 360 Afterglow controller. Works really well. But basically since the Xbox One and PS4 was launched...that controller has not been used. Not even once. There are just no PC versions of games anymore where I would want to use a controller.

Probably another reason I am considering only upgrading my PC to a HTPC for 4K with no GPU.....but with an APU. And game on console only.

All the way back to my Need For Speed days. Like Underground / Most Wanted / Shift / Hot Pursuit...........I "ONLY" played these on keyboard. And was extremely good with it. Never even considered a controller for those. And to be honest, if I were to buy a racing game today...it would be console.

Man, I played my racing games (long live NFS: Porsche Unleashed, what a game) on PC with a joy stick. I still have a USB Joystick after I needed one when my legacy port was no longer on motherboards but I was playing Desert Combat and flying helicopters was just so much easier with the stick.

I am eyeing Squadrons, because naturally I bought my first joystick for Tie Fighter

I couldn't handle the loading times on consoles, so there were games I just didn't get to play. I waited through all the PS4 generation of games waiting for the PS5 and it's faster loading times and I think it will end up being the right call

@JPB no RTS? No Grim Dawn/Diablo/PoE? Lots of games are still great on the PC. But you're probably OK playing most if not all of those on a real APU so... I guess you really should be good to go regardless

I've been wanting to do this with my bedroom HTPC. I do use my living room HTPC for games, but it's not terribly common for the bedroom one... and if I did, it would probably be "simpler" games (something like Dead Cells or Rogue Legacy 2). My biggest qualm is that AMD is the best option for a good APU right now (at least until Intel releases an Xe-based desktop chip), but they aren't releasing an RDNA-equipped APU until 2022. Their APUs are saddled with "ancient" Vega cores, which are now two generations old (RDNA and RDNA2). Give me a 4C/8T with... 8-16 RDNA2 CUs, and I should be good. (I believe the latest consoles are 40+ CUs for reference.)

I forgot all about Porsche Unleashed. I still have my copy from way back then. Still almost new condition as well.

However, I do play the Age Of Empires games on PC. Have almost new copies of all 3 of those as well. I also have a excellent copy of Age Of Mythology <---AWESOME GAME. Including, but not limited to.... Command & Conquer series. My favorite is Generals.

I would love to see these on the PS4 or PS5. Of course will "never" happen. But I can still dream I guess.

Speaking of such, I do not purchase new consoles until at least 10 games are released that I am waiting for. I did not even purchase a PS4 until December 2019. So it will be a few years before I go with a PS5.

I am looking forward to the Silent Hill reboot. And Resident Evil VILLAGE. But it inst enough to entice me to pick up a PS5 though. Two games just isnt enough.

And "WHY" is the Playstation 4 the only SONY console, where they have not released a Castlevania ? That sucks. I absolutely love the Lords Of Shadow series.

My ps5 arrived yesterday. Was worried I would open the box and find a vacuum inside or some other appliance. Everything was there that was supposed to be with the bundle.

My first impression, this thing is huge! It does not fit in my entertainment center unless I have it sitting horizontally. It's an open space design so I'm not concerned about air flow here.

Setup went smoothly with transferring only the saved games from my ps4 pro. 6gb of data took about 2-3 minutes to swap over. I was only playing ghosts of tsushima and finishing up last of us part 2 previously so I'll install these two games first.

I really like the controller. It's sturdier than the dualshock 4 but not overly heavy. I like that they did away with the center light bar. Oh and the haptic feedback from the 10 minutes if Astro's playroom was pretty damn nice. It's also interesting they added a mic in the controller, I suppose for those that don't want to buy a headset. You need to set this to auto mute when you boot up the console or else it will be on by default.

The UI is a bit more simplistic but still need to get used to the home button actions. I like what they did with the ps store now, how it doesn't open up in a separate layer.

What I did not like is that Sony went cheap on the usb A to usb C controller charging cable. Neither one of my controllers charge when the console is in rest mode if you plug in the usb A cable in the front of the PS5. If you plug that cable in the rear 3.0 usb ports, it does charge the controller in rest mode.

So I decided to test out the front port again by using another USB A to USB C cable I had from a different device. This time the front usb A port charged both controllers without an issue.

Looks like a lot of people on reddit have had this issue. Seems that a new cable fixed it in most cases. Others reported having to reset the system and not restore from a backup. But to me it seems like it's a cable issue if I can get it to work with another cable.

Wait - yours came with a charging cable?

EDIT:

LOL mind was still in the box hidden behind that little cardboard wall. I thought Sony was just pulling an Apple. I used my Switch USB C cable when I set mine up.

Yup it was in the cardboard thing, at first i couldn't find it either and then I didn't see the controller that comes in the box with the system because of how it was packaged.

Try out that cable I bet you have the same issue in rest mode. I'm going to order another type A to C cable from Anker and this way I can keep the usb C port available for charging the pulse headset at the same time once I get it.

I don't use rest mode so I'm not really concerned about that issue.

I don't think it has anything to do with rest mode. I just think the cable they provided with the controller initially is bad. Even while the system is on and controller plugged in, it shows a charging animation but it's not really charging the controller with the cable they provided.

I'll try it out at some point and report back. I have like 4 USB-C cables lying around from Switch things and now this, so in the end it should hopefully be a non issue even if it's bad for me.

That's what I used as well... mostly because it was already out and sitting near the PS5 anyway, and it meant that I could just leave the PS5's cable in the box. I also used the Switch to charge the PS5 controllers before I got the DualSense Charger.

Yeah when I opened my box the controller just fell out of the inner box and I saw no cord or anything so figured it just didn't come with one.

So I tried the Walmart drop at 9... yeah. Don't know if I will bother trying again any time soon.

I actually ended up getting lucky and got an XSX.

I got it on the second drop they did after the "this is temporarily out of stock" message had been up.

I pressed add to cart like 30+ times and it kept saying out of stock. Then one time captcha popped up and I clicked it and then took me to cart. Then I picked local pickup down in DC and checked out without hassle.

I got that a bunch of times. Then it said it was out of stock.
They just came back in stock again. Looks like every 15 minutes or so they have been putting more inventory up. Don't give up yet. It flat out said Out of Stock on the product listing page and then it worked.

Here are direct add to cart links too. This is how I know it came back up cause I saw the XSX one and I clicked it and it took me to cart with it in there. I didn't get another one though.

Looks like there was an issue and they were letting people add it to cart but there was no actual inventory, so when they got to checkout it failed. This was later.

Sony did say in a tweet I read that they are going to fulfill more stock before the year end. What helped me was actually following this guy Wario64 on twitter. I enabled notifications from him and sometimes he would be a bit late, but most times he would tweet out when walmart, gamestop, and MS store, etc would be posting inventory for sale.

The day I got my bundle, I hit add to cart on GameStop's site like 20+ times. I saw the guy's tweet a bit late but after refreshing, it seemed stock was slowly tricking in I suppose.

I want to get a series x too but I should probably wait until I can get rid of these old consoles now. No one would want to buy them now so trade in would have to do i suppose. I just hate getting new stuff and having to store away the old, takes up space and will never get used again.

Gamestop is offering $175 credit or $140 cash for both X1X and PS4 Pro. I am thinking of doing that once I xfer everything over. Probably would just do the cash though as I don't shop at GS often.
