Bungie has had an interesting path. Mac developer > MS buys them > spin off > Close ties with Activision > Spin off > Sony buys them

They should bring back Myth, that game was awesome.

Take 2 owns the IP. Same with Oni presumably. I think the only thing the actually own is Destiny.

In regard to my thoughts on Bungie in regard to Destiny 2... I can't be too sure because I haven't played Destiny 2 in so long. I got pretty frustrated with it back when it first came out due to some awkward game design choices, and I'm not even talking about the micro-transactions. Probably the one that sticks out the most in my mind is that ammo drops seemed to almost prioritize the weapon type that you weren't using. For example, if I was using an elemental gun, I almost exclusively had kinetic ammo drop. In most cases, that probably isn't a huge deal, but it was a huge problem for me in raids. I'd have one weapon type that was predominantly better in a raid encounter, but I'd have to swap to the far inferior one whenever I thought that it wouldn't hamper me enough just to get ammo for the good gun. From what I've heard, ammo drops were changed a while back, so this isn't the case anymore, but ugh... was it really frustrating while playing! Although, I have considered that perhaps I just didn't understand systems well enough to know what weapons I should have with me to swap between.

I guess the one big thing for me is that I play Destiny 2 on PC anyway, and given that Sony doesn't seem to mind releasing games on PC -- albeit, usually well after the PlayStation release -- we should still see Bungie titles on PC.

Ah, I completely missed that Take-Two was the publisher on that one when I grabbed the Wiki link. Yeah... I doubt we'll see that one then, but maybe a fun spiritual successor?

Would be great to see a modern era socom!
I honestly believe that if Sony plays their cards right and gets the right developer involved, they could create a new SOCOM franchise with a multiplayer community that rivals COD. Everyone I know who has played SOCOM online in the past has had nothing but raving reviews about that time in their lives.

Not sure about rivaling cod because cod has its own genre, it caters more to the really fast paced players, which is why I always preferred battlefield (2042 exemption here).

Socom reminds me of how ahead of it's time swat 4 was when it came out. Finally now an Indy developer created Ready or Not which is starting to become more like what swat 5 would have been during modern times.

I played a lot of Marathon, but I think Halo is basically the spiritual successor to that series.

Still, if Doom can still play now, why not Marathon? Durandal gave me series creep vibes

“They’re Everywhere!”

One of the first games if not the first to have actual aiming of your weapon using the mouse.

The logo for Halo actually uses the Marathon logo inside it too so I believe you are right that it’s the spiritual successor and I think they carried over many ideas and took inspiration from the Marathon games. Rogue AI, some of the alien races may have been inspired by Marathon enemies too in some ways.

I beta tested the ps2 network adapter and Socom was one of the games included with the beta and it was very well done. Ended up getting a ps2 HDD and modem for free for being part of the beta.

I also beta tested the original Xbox live system and the best game they had for the beta was MotoGP which was also super well done. Later titles in the series went down in overall quality and up in complexity becoming too much of a sim to be enjoyable for casual players.

My Dad still insists that our bots in Source or other games be pre-pended with BOB

All those poor Born on Boards, just getting treated like they were nothing!

Seriously, a reboot like Doom got I would be all about. I was playing those when I was maybe 12 and I am not sure I ever finished them because I mainly played with my dad because for me it was so intense. A fps like that was such a step up from the console stuff I had played up to that point.

I just bought the Black Mesa project for my son (10) as his first shooter (gotta start with a classic) and he started it when I wasn't around. Now he won't play it alone - it is pretty intense and so many of the "tropes" of FPS games that make it feel comfortable to me are all new to him. To relive it all of that again for the first time, crazy!

And Myth... I didn't get to play it the first time around because I just didn't have the money to buy it as a kid and I guess I forgot about it until it was too late. I would love to play a remastered version of that too. Seems like a core game that is done just begging to be dragged into the here and now for more money printing....

Maybe we'll finally see a remaster for the first Bungie game that I played: Oni!
I played that way more than I should have. It was so much fun taking on multiple baddies and executing them one by one with excellently animated combos. But reviewers were pretty unkind. I think it was IGN that said something like, "You will only play this game if you want Konoko to have your baby".

Well crap, Dying Light 2 looks lousy. God I hope Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West deliver. Still, Dying Light 2 was the game I was most looking forward to this gen after how much I loved the first, so this disappoints me way more than the mess that Cyberpunk was.

I wouldn't base it off Gamespot or IGN solely. I'm waiting for acg to review it and a few other independent reviewers.

Original game also got something like a 74 too..I guess the expectations 7 years later definitely should be higher.

Gamespot gave cyberpunk and bf2042 a 7 and those games had lots of issues.

Gamespot complained the story was boring, same as the first game and they also mentioned combat was repetitive? It was the same in the first game from what I remember.

I'll wait to see what others are saying.

The bugs are what kill it for me. Especially since this is really an $80 game since they have paid DLC scheduled for June already, so something they almost certainly cut out of the full game. I played Dying Light 1 at launch on PC and the only bug I saw was turning up draw distance tanked the framerate. Otherwise the game was clean. I'm not paying full price for an unfinished game. I bet it'll hit $30 physical in not too long if it's really as buggy as the IGN review shows.

Sad because this might have been my most anticipated game of the gen after how much I loved and how many times I replayed the original.

You still have forbidden west in a few weeks and elden ring.

Personally I never buy DLC so if I buy it on PC I only will be paying taxes on it since I have a steam gift card. Here's hoping at least some major bugs get fixed with the day 1 patch.

I'm not excited to hear the story is a drag as I personally need something to help me move forward.

I feel they hyped it up too much and even after having played and not finished DL 1, and not reading too much into the sequel, I expected much better from the way it was shown off.

The DLC for Dying Light 1 was great but it felt like a whole new game because of the driving added. And that came out more than a year after the base game. But paid DLC four months after launch just feels like a hidden rise in the cost of the game.

The reviews killed the story in Dying Light 1 too but I enjoyed it.

God I hope Forbidden West and Elden Ring don't let us down.

It's weird how ACG says he didn't encounter many bugs at least on PC. He mentions some performance issues on PC and an issue with co op where it may corrupt save files. He doesn't mention if he has the day 1 patch either. His review is still pending apparently.

Skill up says there are some gameplay bugs but also mentions most of the bugs have been fixed during the review period so that also leaves some questions.

I'm excited for forbidden west now that I finally finished zero dawn.

I think elden ring will be very similar looking and have a play style like demon souls. So I'm not as excited for that game but I'll still buy it.

Seems like he still encountered enough to say wait for a sale as opposed to buying at launch, which is probably what I'll do.

He says wait for a sale also because of co op right now corrupting save game files. He says on Reddit there is a patch coming but until he can verify the patch actually fixes that issue, he's gonna keep the review in progress.

He does also mention Techland told reviewers ahead of time that co op has this issue and that they should wait for the day 0 patch.

Unfortunately I don't have anyone to play co op with and even if I did, it only seems to progress the host's story and not your own but at least you get to keep the items you find.

I really don't understand why these companies send out review copies that they know have issues, it makes the reviews initially pointless.

Sifu really does live up to the high review scores. Punishingly difficult but the combat is addicting as hell and the only real negative I can say about the game is the voice acting is Symphony of the Night level bad. Combat is a blast though. Really glad this released now when Dying Light 2 turned out to be grossly unfinished at launch after I had been clearing my schedule for it. Sifu reminds me quite a bit of Sekiro and your deaths never seem cheap. I kind of gave up on parrying which might really kill me in the late game. The parry timing is tough though, still may be forced to learn it anyways like with Sekiro. The dodge mechanics are great, you have one button to jump out of the way, but you can also weave to get away from attacks too while putting you in a better position to counter than you would with normal dodges like you'd see in other games of the genre. And the weave timing is quite a bit more forgiving than the parry timing, though parrying gives you much better counters than weaving does.

Sifu does seem interesting even though I don't prefer these type of rogue games. I may pick it up later down the road. Since it's only 5 levels and it's very difficult, I feel like if I have the time, which is rare these days, I might actually get somewhere in it.

Dying light 2 got another patch tonight, PC version is up to 1.05 now. Mostly related to performance and crashes according to the patch notes.

For the 6 hours I played I didn't encounter any major bugs on PC, mostly performance hiccups due to demanding ray tracing settings.

Have they fixed the ragdolls? The way zombies being kicked off buildings and thrown into spikes looked like crap in DL2 in this video I saw a few days ago... see from the 2:35 mark to the 3:25 mark to see what I mean.

There is a mod out that adds some physics from DL 1. The dev is still working on it and tweaking it.

I haven't tried it but I actually started dying light 1 on PC since I never finished it on PS4. I can see how there's a bit of more weight to the weapons and connect when you hit.

Techland has stated in a tweet that they will look into the ragdoll issue when one user commented about kicking zombies off roofs.

I'm definitely waiting a few months on DL2. Slamming zombies violently into those spikes on the wall was one of my favorite things to do in DL1. I'll wait and pay half price for the full experience when hopefully via patches they bring the violent action up to snuff. Man I hope Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West release as complete and polished games because I'm thirsty as hell for new stuff to play after how much of a waste 2021 was. Though Sifu has been a brilliant surprise, so much better actually playing it than it looked in the previews.
