I would have really liked to see a current poll on this. Necro thread seems to preclude this, sadly.

The notebook doesn't state whether he bet for or against his team.
As a Red's fan, that matters to me.

Personally, I don't care if players bet on their sport as long as they bet to win.
They can shave points all they want as long as it doesn't affect the win.

The MLB rule was pretty explicit though. No betting no matter what.

This new information shows he bet on his team. I was always in the camp of "let him in", but now with this new data, I don't think so. By betting on your team you can affect the outcome of games -- plain and simple. Even if he bet on his team to WIN, he had influence (well. I'm not going to put in that player/pitcher today... I'll save all the good arms for tomorrow when I place a bet).

Betting on baseball is THE cardinals sin -- above PEDs and anything else. The Black Sox made this stance more than true.

Charlie Hustle is one of the greatest ever to play the game. But he more than tainted his legacy. I'm sad to say it, but he shouldn't ever make it into the HoF.

Keep in mind too, it's sportswriters that vote players in. They will never (at least not in our lifetime) vote him in.

Another fun fact (that I think/heard this is true, but I can't find anything specific on it):

The HoF is not run by the MLB. So technically speaking just because Rose is banned from MLB, doesn't mean he can not be inducted into the HoF. Now the HoF specifically going against MLB's stance on Rose probably wouldn't even happen. But, from what I understand (and I could be WAY off) the MLB themselves do not directly hold Rose's fate in their hands.

Edit From Wikipedia:

Following the banning of Pete Rose from MLB, the selection rules for the Baseball Hall of Fame were modified to prevent the induction of anyone on Baseball's permanent suspension list, such as Rose or Shoeless Joe Jackson. Many others have been barred from participation in MLB, but none have Hall of Fame qualifications on the level of Jackson or Rose.
Jackson and Rose were both banned from MLB for life for actions related to gambling on their own teams—Jackson was determined to have cooperated with those who conspired to lose the 1919 World Series intentionally, and Rose voluntarily accepted a permanent spot on the ineligible list in return for MLB's promise to make no official finding in relation to alleged betting on the Cincinnati Reds when he was their manager in the 1980s. (Baseball's Rule 21, prominently posted in every clubhouse locker room, mandates permanent banishment from the MLB for having a gambling interest of any sort on a game in which a player or manager is directly involved.) Rose later admitted that he bet on the Reds in his 2004 autobiography. Baseball fans are deeply split on the issue of whether these two should remain banned or have their punishment revoked. Writer Bill James, though he advocates Rose eventually making it into the Hall of Fame, compared the people who want to put Jackson in the Hall of Fame to "those women who show up at murder trials wanting to marry the cute murderer".[37] Zev Chafets, a columnist, wrote a piece on letting steroids into the Hall of Fame.[38]

Commissioner Rob Manfred has turned down Rose's latest application for reinstatement, therefore Rose remains banned. As it should be.

Manfred cited Rose's continued gambling on baseball and evidence he bet on games while playing for the Reds, and also noted Rose has not been completely honest about his gambling on baseball.

Go away, Pete. You have your records, your career stats are intact, and that will have to be enough. Take the hint - if you have any chance of reinstatement and election to the Hall, it won't come until after you're dead and can't make money from it.

That's petty and irrelevant. And honesty? LOL People often get out of prison for murder after serving less time than Rose's ban and don't get prequalified for release because they were 'honest' about what they did. There's no evidence Rose compromised the game, while there will likely be steroid users getting in the HOF much sooner than Rose, which will be a real tragedy. The holdout at this time is just a bunch of political holier-than-thou mud slinging, than a real consideration of the facts.
