My hopes and dreams are shattered. ProfJohn calling Clinton a popular and successful president?? Man, what a country!
Well I don't want to ruin your Christmas dreams so I shall remain quiet about Santa.

But for the most part Clinton had a successful term. Good economy, but a mixed record on foreign policy and a failure at the biggest foreign policy challenge he faced. However, don't think that Clinton deserves ALL the credit for what went right during his term. A lot of his success was based on being in the right place at the right time.

1. The economy was already growing when he came into office.
2. Russia has collapsed allowing Clinton to cut $100 billion a year of the DoD budget.
3. Y2k caused a great run up in technology spending near the end of his term.
4. The dot com bubble, which he had nothing to do with, is the greatest reason he has a HUGE surplus in his last year in office.

Bush on the other hand had horrible luck when it came to timing.
1. He took over an economy on the decline.
2. 9-11 totally changed things in Washington and required huge defense and domestic spending increases.
Now Bush certainly screwed up, but a lot of his problems are partially based on bad timing. Take away 9-11 and the cost of the war on terror and think about where he would be.

They don't want to hear this, John. I admire your persistence... but I ask: why?

the entire debate, mccain's goal was to not answer the question and to try smearing the shit out of obama. there were so many times whenever mccain would lie about things obama wanted to do and obama was sitting there looking at him like, "oh, this i gotta hear... uh huh..."... it was priceless.

something that pissed me off is that obama took mccain's bait so many times. i just wanted him to brush it off and say that the fact checkers will set everything straight and to wait until the debates are over and watch the commentary on how mccain's spewing bullshit. too many times, obama would have to respond some long-winded response and miss the chance to answer a question all because mccain set him up. another thing that kinda bugged me was that he would take too long to answer a little too often.

mccain's a piece of shit.

I disagree, I don't think either candidate was as concerned with answering questions as they were with throwing punches or retaliating when the other candidate threw a punch. I watched some of the debate but was so badly disappointed that I turned it off.

I think they should just get rid of the debates altogether. They've become completely pointless and we're not learning anything about the candidates. Of course they'll keep them to make it sem like we're vetting our candidates, but still...

I think debates are a good way to judge how candidates will act when the pressure is on.

I mean, I can see Palin winking at the king of Saudi Arabia when shes trying to negotiate a new oil deal in her mini dress and low cut top.

It won't work because any reaction will lead to the issuance of a fatwa - which is verry verry bad

I think they could serve this function, but only if the moderators toughened up and forced the candidates to answer the questions. And improved the questions a lot. Asking what a candidate would do if Israel was attacked is a terrible question for a debate and worthless for any Americans that are genuinely undecided.

Exactly, perhaps I should post what Hannity or Rush said as a counter argument.

There are people in the media who at least try to appear balanced, and then those who are just cheerleaders to their side. Sullivan is the later.

I think you would have more success with a reality tv show that pits the prospective candidates in challenges against each other. Each week, weakest performer is sent home. Think of the ratings man!

what was mccain talking about with obama's projector?

$3 mil for a Planetarium in Chicago. Probably not just for a projector. Planetariums are cool. There are far worst ways to spend the people's money.

It's not a normal projector...it's one of those huge "Star Projectors" that can recreate all of the visible stars in the sky at any given moment across a hemisphere screen.
They have one at Griffith Observatory as well, and it's considered one of the best Astronomy learning tools there is!

Obama's moment was when he said the Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran line. Obama pulled the okie-doke with his usual agreeing before disagreeing technique. McCain even says, "Thank you".

McCAIN: Complained that Obama's "cronies and friends" had received money from Fannie and Freddie.

THE FACT: McCain has his own ties to the mortgage giants. Rick Davis, his campaign manager, has been a focus of attention because Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae paid him or his lobbying firm more than $2 million dating back to 2000.

 Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

No, not at all. The debate was closer than some would have you believe. Points go to Obama for keeping his wits, and being able to intellectualize and explain his position, and to McCain for connecting to his immediate audience. CNN had a little graph of how undecided voters from OH felt at any moment, and McCain fared well enough at least on a gut level.

McCain needed to win big though, which he did not. It was somewhat like Biden/Palin in that Palin didn't need to win, just show she wasn't as big of an idiot as she was on the Couric interviews. She had to surpass expectations. Since she pulled that off, she helped her side more than Biden did his, although clearly Biden won in an absolute sense. Obama didn't win big, but he didn't have to. He had to just look good enough, which was no problem. McCain needed a home run. Even if he had won, he didn't surpass expectations.

In the end Obama won more for his campaign than McCain did for his, however as I said in absolute terms it wasn't all one sided.
